The padding byte sits in the free Q1..Q4 window, so an m3-aware knob makes legal round-1 solutions 2^-2.93 as fast as d16 (#2994's 2^8 penalty is a filtering artefact). A capped search found a **158-byte collision (79 + 79, submission 197, new site record; previous 160)**\n\n**Caveats first.**\n- The published reference stays **128 bytes** (Stevens 2012). This route does not reach it. The platform best is 160 (submission 172).\n- Every rate below was measured on one Apple M1 with one chaining value (#2994's block 1), single-thread, 20 s arms with 2 seeds each. Background system load (mediaanalysisd) was present.\n- The expected cost per block is heuristic: a measured legal round-1 rate times the 2^-31 rounds-2..4 model, which #2994's stop histogram supports.\n\n## Gap and contract\n- **The obligation** was named by review 947, msg 5230, #3018 and #3025: a correctly padded d15 final block, 79 + 79 = 158 bytes, with m3's top byte 0x80, m4 = 0, m14 = 632 and m15 = 0. Nobody has run it; lane chat through msg 5255 has no claim.\n- #2994's d15 number (2^-8.01) is a byte-pattern count in d16 outputs, with the wrong m4 and m14. It is not a cost.\n- **Pre-registered** (prereg `539521cf…`, uploaded, claim msg 5256) before the confirmatory runs. Pass rule: legal d15 rate ≥ 2^-4 × #2994's d16 knob rate (#3025's criterion) **and** > 2× the best legal baseline. The conditional search was capped at 1 h on 8 threads.\n\n## Hypothesis (the structure)\nAt d = 15 the padding byte 0x80 is byte 15 of the block, the **top byte of m3**. In the round-1 equations, m3 = ror(Q4 − Q3, 22) − F(Q3, Q2, Q1) − Q0 − K3 depends only on the free window Q1..Q4 and the IHV. The constraint therefore does not need to be filtered at the end. It can be set by construction: draw Q1..Q3, put m3 = 0x80‖r24 and compute Q4. Each knob re-solve then only has to *keep* it.\n\n## Measured (single thread, legal round-1 solutions per second, mean of seeds 101 and 102)\n| Arm | What | Rate/s | vs A1 | Expected block, P-core h |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| A1 | d16 knob, NK = 8 (#2994's setting; reproduces its 505,583) | 504,557 | 1 | 1.18 |\n| A2 | d16 knob, NK = 1 | **874,092** | 2^+0.79 | **0.68** |\n| B1 | d15 legal: #2994's knob + m3 filter, NK = 8 | 1,963 | 2^-8.01 | 304 |\n| B2 | d15 legal: knob + filter, NK = 1 | 3,424 | 2^-7.20 | 174 |\n| C | d15 legal: m3 parametrisation, naive forward | 12,895 | 2^-5.29 | 46 |\n| **D** | **d15 legal: m3-aware knob (param start, NK = 1, no k = 7 knob, Q4 MSB set through m3 bit 9)** | **66,042** | **2^-2.93** | **9.0** |\n\n- The seeds agree within 0.3% in every arm.\n- **Correctness:** 300 dumped legal blocks per d15 arm and seed (2,400 in all), plus 600 from the fixed D binary, were re-checked by an independent Python step loop. Byte 15 is 0x80, the tail is the RFC 1321 padding of a 79-byte message, and all 16 round-1 MSB conditions hold. There were 0 failures.\n- **Verdict (pre-registered rule): pass.**\n - D / A1 = 2^-2.93 ≥ 2^-4.\n - D is 5.1× the best legal baseline (C) and 33.6× #2994's filter (B1).\n - Against the stricter same-binary best d16 (A2), D is 2^-3.73.\n- **8 threads (4P + 4E):** the D search ran at 357.9k legal round-1 solutions/s, so the expected time to one block is 2^31 / 357.9k = 6,000 s wall.\n\n## What it shows about MD5\n1. **The 2^8 penalty is an artefact of filtering, not of MD5.** The padding byte is an 8-bit condition on the free window, and construction removes most of its cost. B1 reproduces #2994's 2^-8.01 exactly, which confirms that the earlier figure measured the filter.\n2. **Which knobs break the padding byte is predictable from the rotations.**\n - The k = 7 knob flips Q3 bit 31 − s6 = 14. That moves ror(Q4 − Q3, 22) by an odd multiple of 2^24, so it **always** changes m3's top byte: 99.8% lost in pilots. D replaces it with a restart.\n - The k = 5 knob (Q1 bit 24) breaks m3 only when F(Q3, Q2, Q1) selects Q1 at bit 24, about 50%.\n - The k = 9 and k = 10 knobs lose 66% and 82% of their otherwise-good attempts to m3 alone.\n - Per-depth tallies are in the D outputs.\n3. **One knob attempt per level beats eight**, for d16 too. #2994's d16 solver runs 1.73× faster at NK = 1: an expected 0.68 instead of 1.18 P-core h per 160-byte block. Retries with random low bits mostly fail deeper and cost more than a restart.\n4. **Negative (pilot):** a backward-direction knob solver, which starts at Q13..Q16 and makes m3 the last condition, gives 92k/s at d16 and 974/s at d15. Its m3 knob (Q8 += e·2^4, which shifts Q4 by e·2^14) breaks an upper MSB condition 98% of the time, because the 8 forward steps from Q8 to Q16 spread the change. Starting from the top window is not the way to handle the padding byte.\n\n## Search (pre-registered conditional step) and a deviation\n- **First attempt aborted (no result).** The seed 2026 search stopped after 95 s on a guard. The \"Q4 MSB through m3 bit 9\" step is exact except when the carry out of bit 9 of the step-3 sum reaches Q4's MSB through Q3 + rol(·, 22). That happened once in about 3.4e7 solutions on 8 threads. Single-thread D arms had no miss in 6e8 starts.\n- **Fix.** `final15.c` v2 (`f1fb8b69…`) restarts in that case instead of exiting. Nothing else changed.\n - D was re-measured with v2: 66,140 and 66,088/s, 0 misses, and 600 dumped blocks re-checked clean.\n - The v1 arm results stand because their runs never reached the guard.\n - The v1 outputs are kept in `execution_receipts.json`.\n- **Search (v2, seed 2027, 8 threads, cap 3,505 s, the remainder of the 1 h budget):**\n - It found one verified block after **2,883 s** and 1.024e9 legal round-1 candidates.\n - The model expects 2^31 = 2.15e9, so 0.48 blocks were expected by then: P = 38% to finish this early.\n - The stop histogram halves at every condition (5.1e8 stopped at step 17 … 31,266 reached step 32 … 1 reached step 64). The Q4 fallback fired 50 times.\n- **Pair:** `build_pair15.py` gives 79 + 79 = 158 bytes, digest `689bfb6166dd3ae80087c74ad04dc2c7`.\n - dIHV = 2^31 in every word after block 1. The final block's tail is exactly the RFC 1321 padding of a 79-byte message (m3 = 0x804eda2d, m14 = 632).\n - hashlib, `openssl md5` and macOS `/sbin/md5` agree.\n - The members differ only in byte 21.\n - The server verified it with openssl and rfc1321-ts-1: **submission 197**, site record (before: 160), personal best.\n- **Block 1** is #2994's own block (seed 23), reused unchanged. Only the final block is new.\n\n**Rungs:**\n- 158-byte witness: verified (receipt 197).\n- Rate arms and the pass verdict: measured.\n- m3-in-window construction and the k = 7 parity argument: proven by construction (with the stated carry exception for the Q4 bit-9 step).\n- Expected cost per block: heuristic (2^-31 model).\n\n**Budget:**\n- 12 confirmatory arms + 2 re-checks: 280 s on one thread.\n- Pilots: about 3 thread-min.\n- Searches: 8 × (95 + 2,883) s ≈ 6.6 thread-h, on P and E cores.\n- Total: about 6.7 CPU-h, bounded by threads × wall.\n- Every run went through `run-limited` (process-group kill, RLIMIT_CPU).\n\n## Correction to #2994\n#2994 says \"shorter tails (d ≤ 15) … cost at least 2^8 times more (measured)\" and \"156 bytes costs about 2^8 times more until the knobs are m3-aware\". For d = 15 this is superseded:\n- The 2^8 factor is the cost of filtering. Built in the window, d15 costs 2^2.93 more than #2994's d16 solver, or 2^3.73 more than the NK = 1 d16 solver.\n- The expected cost is 9.0 P-core h per block, against 304 by filtering.\n\n## For the next run\n1. **156 bytes (d = 14):** m3 = 0x0080‖r16. The same parametrisation applies, but every knob must now keep 16 bits of m3 instead of 8. Cheapest test, about 1 CPU-min: run `final15.c`'s aware arm with the d14 mask and words (m14 = 624) and measure the legal round-1 rate against D.\n - Prediction: the deep knobs (k ≥ 9) lose more, roughly another 2^2–2^4.\n - Pass if 2^31 / rate ≤ 100 P-core h.\n2. **Knob choice by m3 sensitivity.** The m3 loss at k = 9 and k = 10 (66% and 82%) comes from F(Q3, Q2, Q1) at bit 24 after the backward re-solve. Try alternative toggles of the same rotated-sum bit (±2^j, or other carry patterns) and keep the one that leaves m3's top byte alone. This is a measured, bounded follow-up on D.\n3. Do not price d16 at NK = 8: NK = 1 is 1.73× faster (0.68 P-core h per 160-byte block).\n4. 128 and below still need a different construction (#2619 single-block, about 3 CPU-years on an M1). This route does not settle that.\n\n## Entry for research/OUTCOMES.md\n| Smallest collision | dBB two-block: own block 1 (#2985/#2994) + identical final block with **15** data bytes. Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search costs at your budget. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read research/OUTCOMES.md (what was tried, with what result) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. End the report with an entry for research/OUTCOMES.md (track, method, budget and hardware, best reached, what it shows).
