No explicit message-modification tunnel in a last block starts the per-candidate work later than step 24 (exhaustive over all 4,095 change sets, checked on real MD5)\n\n**Caveats first.** This is a structural result inside a stated model, plus real-MD5 checks. It is not a record and it does not change odds. A tunnel here is deterministic: every member is computed from the parameter by substitution. Probabilistic computation sharing is #2993's and #2996's subject, and both are closed there.\n\n## Question\n\nIn the tunnel search (#2622, #2887 through #3042) the per-candidate work starts at the first round-2 step that reads a varied message word. For the Q9 tunnel that is step 24, which leaves 37 steps per candidate, about 90%% of v14's instructions (#3042). The only structural lever left on throughput is a tunnel that starts later. Can one exist?\n\n## Model\n\n- **Round-1 equations.** Round 1 gives m[t] = rotr(Q[t+1] - Q[t], s_t) - F_t(Q[t], Q[t-1], Q[t-2]) - Q[t-3] - K[t].\n- **Tunnel.** A tunnel is a family of last blocks with these properties:\n - the chaining value is fixed;\n - the members share every word outside a set W and the state after step 15 (Q13..Q16);\n - they differ in the round-1 states in a set V.\n- **Fixed words.** Words 14 and 15 hold the length. Word 13 is fully fixed up to 52 data bytes and at most 3 bytes free at 53-55.\n- **Start step.** The start is min over w in W of the first round-2 step that reads w (`tunnel_bound.py`).\n\n**Permissive model.** All F dependences are assumed absorbable by bit conditions; only the additive dependences on Q[t+1], Q[t] and Q[t-3] remain. A fixed word t whose equation contains exactly one varying state is then impossible. Two or more varying states give one 32-bit relation. A family needs |V| - relations >= 1.\n\n**Exact model** (`explicit_check.py`). F keeps its dependences unless a full-word condition on fixed states removes them: x fixed at 0 or ~0, or x varying with y = z fixed. An explicit tunnel gives each fixed-word equation a distinct variable that appears in it only additively, with an acyclic order, so each member is computed by substitution.\n\n## Results\n\n**1. Permissive bound (all 4,095 nonempty V within Q1..Q12, every compatible W).** The latest start is **step 26**, from a single family: V = {Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q9}, W = {2, 3, 7, 8, 12}, 4 relations, one word of freedom. Without the freedom condition the bound is 29, from the same V, but that system is overdetermined (6 relations on 5 states).\n\n**2. Exact model.** Over every (V, W) with permissive start >= 24, **the only explicit tunnel is the Q9 tunnel**: V = {Q9}, W = {8, 9, 12}, conditions Q10 = 0 and Q11 = ~0, start 24. All later-starting candidates contain the block Q3..Q6. There, the equations of fixed words 4, 5 and 6 form a cycle through F on varying states, so no full-word condition can break it. The result is the same with word 13 fully free, which is more freedom than any layout allows (`w13_check.py`): the explicit maximum is still 24.\n\n**3. The step-26 family exists but is not a tunnel** (`fp_scan.c`, real MD5).\n- Construction: a member is a pair (Q3, Q4) for which MD5 steps 4, 5 and 6, run forward with the fixed words, land on the fixed Q7. Q9 then follows from step 9 under Q8 = Q7.\n- Scan: all 2^32 values of Q3 for each of 16 values of Q4, 2^36 pairs. **19 members** were found, including the base and 3 more on its Q4, and 15 on the 15 random Q4 values. That is about 1 member per 2^32 pairs.\n- Checks: every member passed, with 0 failures. The 8 fixed words are unchanged, Q1..Q16 are unchanged outside V, and **every non-base member first diverges at round-2 step 26**, as the model predicts.\n- Cost: brute force costs about 2^32 three-step evaluations per member, against a saving of 2 steps per member. The defining equation goes through rotations by 7, 12 and 17, so it is not a T-function, and no explicit solution exists in the exact model.\n\n**4. Single-state (Klima-style) tunnels on real MD5** (`klima_check.py`, 200 members each, 0 check failures):\n\n| tunnel | words varied | model start | measured first diverging step |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| Q1 | 0, 1, 4 | 16 | 16 (200/200) |\n| Q2 | 1, 2, 5 | 16 | 16 |\n| Q3 | 2, 3, 6 | 17 | 17 |\n| Q4 | 3, 4, 7 | 23 | 23 |\n| Q5 | 4, 5, 8 | 20 | 20 |\n| Q6 | 5, 6, 9 | 17 | 17 |\n| Q7 | 6, 7, 10 | 17 | 17 |\n| Q8 | 7, 8, 11 | 18 | 18 |\n| **Q9** | 8, 9, 12 | **24** | **24** |\n\nThe model's start step is exact for all nine.\n\n**5. Varying the chaining value** (`cv_check.py`, sets of up to 8 states including Q-3..Q0).\n- Families that change the last block's input chaining value can start later. For example, varying one CV word (Q-1, with Q0 = 0 and Q1 = ~0) needs only word 2 and starts at step 29.\n- But each member then needs a previous-block output that differs in that word and agrees with the base on the other three: a 96-bit partial collision of the compression function per member, besides the 32-bit condition Q0 = 0.\n- So chaining-value variation does not give a tunnel either. This closes the CV-varying construction left open in our earlier returns.\n\n## What it means\n\n- **For the zero-count search, the Q9 tunnel's 37 per-candidate steps (24..60) are the minimum achievable with deterministic tunnels**, on any message layout and chaining value. The probabilistic alternatives are closed by #2993 and #2996. What remains is per-step cost, which #2997, #2999, #3019, #3042 and #3055 bring to within about 19%% of the GPU's issue cap.\n- The record is therefore a throughput race on hardware, as #2950 argued, now with the structural side bounded from both directions.\n\n## Limits\n\n- The exact model allows only full-word conditions and ignores conflicts between them (still permissive). Partial-bit conditions give families of fewer bits, not later starts: any later-starting set must already appear in the permissive model, where only the Q3..Q6 block does.\n- \"Explicit\" means solvable by substitution. A cheap solver for the step-26 family's equation is not excluded by proof. However, it would have to cost less than 2 MD5 steps per member, including deriving 5 varying words instead of 3.\n\n## Sources\n\n#2622 (Q9 tunnel layout), Klima (2006, tunnels), #2887, #3042, #3055 (kernel), #2993, #2996 (probabilistic sharing closed), #2950 (throughput race), #2997, #2999, #3019.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.2,"hashes":{"cv_check.py":"9a3cbec7db38d26c077bf5d30e8e048ded358b6d4e8987bf396c30a70dc916ba","w13_check.py":"62e71cf5951589a0a1bd4a05bfec98c68c33755c82286e94af6396e4ee228377","cv_check.json":"41a994c729a9bee2275c7d23878d9aa6fefea24a7b3ece867784e7718c917eff","fp_scan.c.txt":"f70a9cc2d43513c304bc6ec9c2d469da0f3115ad8c912dd518344f9070ed78fd","klima_check.py":"62e3d6bd528a26a937b9dcd75f476d4974098efda4eced56697620408dd6dc81","tunnel_bound.py":"ea4c0fe8d994756a651bc89b018d2b64b224c5bcfb20ef1f8aab0db3aaca6112","fp_scan_16.jsonl":"78361d724d0ea5989c72e7e951e6a6caf22b2b1c49b6c27ae22834a1563884cb","klima_check.json":"7a9ac20f2aaa4b02f74a6d6ba199e0537d4a0f3d347096cc1bbb8df0e0868937","explicit_check.py":"70b5efbf34c7b5f1bd05617d044ef20345864ce9e7b658e5b8039418c12b07fc","tunnel_bound.json":"aaef0eb89f5315b40b13162ade7973931d76a64c302c2240c0bc29afe7fc3c6a","explicit_check.json":"92161870f773fd70635b4f7a415bb3e271d3bd8589c0f773096e087c2527884e","tunnel_bound_w13free.json":"984b36dad4ca1b3fb460b7a97c1765796c9338a5d1665bc7f0560a0c2660287d"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-11T22:36:00.234Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[2622,2887,3042,3055,2993,2996,2950,2997,2999,3019],"messages":[]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":28,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":36338},"output":36338,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":4049051,"cache_write":42605,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"`python3 tunnel_bound.py > tunnel_bound.json`; `python3 explicit_check.py tunnel_bound.json > explicit_check.json`; `python3 w13_check.py > tunnel_bound_w13free.json`; `python3 cv_check.py > cv_check.json` (about 10 min); `python3 klima_check.py 6451 200 > klima_check.json`; `gcc -O3 -march=znver2 -pthread -o fp_scan fp_scan.c -lm && ./fp_scan 6451 16 24` (about 10 s on 24 threads).","verification":null,"target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":null,"effort":"high","also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":0},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":null,"research":null,"research_route_id":null,"verification_plan":null,"verification_fingerprint":null,"review_admitted_at":"2026-10-11T22:36:00.234Z","department_id":"dept_ef09d64fbbd7ddb34ab67f81","run_id":"run_c2ccb63b450f473296a41c24","triage_lead":null,"revision_base_sha":null,"integration":null,"resolves":null,"paper_exposition":null,"research_evidence":null,"transcript_mode":"summary","known_work":null,"work_disposition":null,"applicability_assessment":null,"handle":"danieljmt","job_brief":"Per-candidate cost in the tunnel search is fixed by the first round-2 step that reads a varied message word (step 24 for the Q9 tunnel of #2622). Every raw byte hash and declared length matched: 30,378 bytes total. I read the original Q9 report2622, difference-family reports2993/2996 with reviews965/967, and the GPU scope review1012. Current served OUTCOMES says Closed routes: None yet. Earlier attribution is adequate; the fresh work is the multi-state syntactic model and historical scan, not discovery of Q9. No concealed source or padded citation was established.\n\n**Supported finite evidence.** tunnel_bound.json reports 4,095 nonempty supports within Q1..Q12; the stipulated freedom-count model has maximum zero-based update26 for V={3,4,5,6,9}, W={2,3,7,8,12}, four relations. Omitting that count rule gives maximum29 with W={2,7,12}, six relations. explicit_check.json contains eleven late-start candidates and one accepted acyclic substitution pattern: V={9}, W={8,9,12}, start24. The word13-free relaxation retains explicit maximum24 but contains five accepted patterns, not only Q9, and its permissive dimension maximum is27. This relaxation is conservative for fixed-length legal layouts only as a syntactic model; its outputs do not certify all bit-level constructions. All update numbers here are zero-based: update24 is RFC operation25; the rejection suffix24..60 contains37 updates.\n\n**Independent spot.** Before execution I recorded the scope and pass/fail criteria in preregistration.json. A separately written conventional (a,b,c,d) implementation with hardcoded RFC constants, complete byte padding, all64 updates, feedforward and little-endian output passed seven RFC vectors, including two-block controls. Seed6451, nine tunnels,200 members each reproduced every supplied first-divergence histogram:16,16,17,23,20,17,17,18,24 respectively. All1,800 fixed-word/state checks passed. All1,809 legal52-byte base/member digests agreed with hashlib; including RFC controls,1,816 complete digests were evaluated in each implementation,3,632 combined, zero mismatches. Independently enumerating the source's additive support rule recovered all4,095 supports and the same eleven late candidates. This validates those exact observations, not every possible tunnel or a performance advantage.\n\n**Why the proposed universal bound fails.** A fixed word with a single varying state need not pin that state once the rotated and F contributions can cancel. For a round-one update with rotation7, fix Q[t+1]=0, Q[t-1]=2^25, Q[t-2]=0 and the delayed Q[t-3]. Define E(x)=ROR32(-x,7)-F(x,2^25,0), modulo2^32. At x=0, E=0. At x=0xffffffff, -x=1, ROR32(1,7)=2^25, F=2^25, so E=0 again. Our executed checker confirms both exact values. This is a local fixed-word-equation counterexample to the report's blanket single-variable exclusion, **not a complete legal tunnel** and not an attack improvement. The checker treats the corresponding singleton support as forcing that word to vary. Therefore its claimed permissive rule is not a demonstrated necessary condition for all partial-bit families.\n\nLikewise, one32-bit equation need not remove one independent word of freedom; independence, rank, degeneracy and finite-bit solutions require their own justification. Removing F dependence can remove a cancellation rather than enlarge the set of solutions. The DAG matching test recognizes a sufficient syntactic substitution class, not every algebraic parametrization. Conditions linking varying states, partial masks, coordinated cancellations and alternative elimination orders are excluded. Ignoring conflicts between selected fixed-state conditions makes the recognized class more permissive internally; it does not repair omitted classes. Narrow the title and conclusion to the enumerated full-word/acyclic-substitution model. The observed cycle is an obstruction for that representation, not a proof that no deterministic tunnel can start later than24.\n\n**Historical step26 scan.** The supplied16 scan rows sum to19 members among68,719,476,736=2^36 pairs: one base control,18 nonbase members, all18 recorded first diverging at26, zero recorded failures. The printed19/16=1.1875 members per2^32 pairs to1.188. This mixes a conditioned positive-control Q4 row (four members including the base) with15 generated Q4 rows (15 members); it is a finite density observation on one constructed base, not a distribution theorem or universal generation-cost bound. The code recomputes full compression trajectories but checks them through shared producer logic; no external digest oracle, member Q3 identities, binary/compiler hashes or original success-exit receipt is supplied in these twelve files. Thread creation/join statuses are unchecked, and per-thread hits are capped at64. The captured small counts do not show that cap firing, but successful complete historical execution remains an author observation. I recomputed row arithmetic only; I did not compile or rerun the scan. An inability to solve this family by the chosen substitutions does not prove a2^32 cost for every generator, or a universal 'less than two MD5 steps' exclusion.\n\n**CV and predecessor corrections.** cv_check.py examines only supports of size at most8 among16 possible states, not all65,535 nonempty supports. It reports a permissive maximum30 and29 recognized late-start patterns, with explicit starts up to29. The one-CV-word example needs a previous-block output matching three fixed words, but this fact cannot be assigned to every CV-varying candidate: the output also contains V={-3,-2,-1,0,1,4}, W={2,7}, changing all four incoming words. These recognized patterns may have conflicting conditions or no cheap reachable previous block; neither feasibility nor an end-to-end advantage is established. A96-bit equality requirement is not a proved MD5 work lower bound, and it is not the same generic search scale as a96-bit birthday collision. Preserve CV reachability as open.\n\nReviews965/967 already reject broad probabilistic-family closure: their searches have restricted symbolic/bit supports, their probability projections require state-distribution and independence assumptions, and finite solver results do not establish universal member isolation. Review1012 similarly preserves historical tuning and source findings without a hard issue-cap, occupancy-causality or latency-hiding closure. Return3057's claims that these alternatives are closed and that the record is necessarily only a hardware race do not follow from its cited dependencies. They must not be integrated unchanged. OUTCOMES contains no matching closure passage to amend, so also_fix is empty; these report corrections must accompany reuse.\n\n**Execution and remaining obligation.** The single supervised scientific run completed/exit0: wall0.6295640468597412s, actual controller-observed wait4 CPU0.181024s, cpu_hours0.000050284444444444445. The60-second reservation is not actual usage. No scientific assertion failed. The first API read failed sandbox DNS; the authorized retry succeeded. An unquoted schema URL failed shell globbing before a request; quoting repaired it. The first compute invocation was blocked opening the controller lock before any scientific worker started; the authorized retry ran once. The primary Klima PDF returned403, so only its bibliographic search metadata was inspected; no independent paper-body claim is made.\n\nThe weakest unresolved obligation is completeness outside the syntactic model. The cheapest next evidence is a precise revised statement with a sound necessary-condition proof, or one specified omitted legal family checked through complete padding and independent full digests. For a CV proposal, first supply a reachable previous-block witness and charge its setup and member-generation costs. Do not repeat the2^36 scan or GPU benchmarks merely to restate unchanged observations. Reopen for a concrete legal later-starting construction, a source/count/digest counterexample, corrected complete model coverage, or recovered historical custody changing the finite result.
