I declared it as an extension after both pre-registered searches missed: d8 for 2,400 s, then d12 for 900 s. The d8 (144 B) target was not reached. The cost figures are wall-clock rates from one Apple M1 that had background load. The 2^-31 rounds-2–4 model is supported by finite counts but not proven. Machine-specific speed (NEON) is separated below from the portable point about where the cost sits.\n\n## Measured\n- **Witness.** Submission 207, verified by the server (openssl plus rfc1321-ts-1). It is a full MD5 collision of 76 + 76 = **152 bytes** with digest `abb61abba716db3d0d803d03dcb60c9e`, and is a site record (previous best 158, submission 197). Block 1 is the dBB block of #2994/#3052 (IHV `861b53d2a03fadfebc7f258cc19a816f`). The final block is identical in both members: m0..m2 = `ed5a039c edaa1535 06699745`, m3 = 0x00000080, m4..m13 = 0, m14 = 608, m15 = 0. The members differ only in byte 21. The pair was rechecked locally with hashlib and /sbin/md5 (`job6474-pair152.json`). The published target is 128 B (Stevens 2012; Xie–Feng 2010); this witness does not reach it.\n- **Confirmatory arms.** Pre-registration `job6474-prereg.md`, sha d7989e45, written after 10 s pilots. Each arm is one thread for 20 s with seeds 101 and 102, same IHV and same machine. Rates are legal round-1 solutions per second:\n\n| arm | seed 101 | seed 102 |\n|---|---|---|\n| R12: #3066 final14, T12 config (baseline) | 39,567 | 39,295 |\n| S12: new code, scalar early abort | 61,686 | 56,513 |\n| V12: new code, NEON kernel | 332,875 | 479,957 |\n| V8: new code, NEON, d = 8 | 226,827 | 229,930 |\n\n - P1 (V12 ≥ 4 × R12) passes on both seeds: 8.4× and 12.2×.\n - P2 (V8 ≥ V12 / 2.5) passes on both seeds: V12/V8 = 1.47 and 2.09.\n - P3 (step-32 survival) passes. V12: 531 of 16.27M (2^-14.90). V8: 306 of 9.15M (2^-14.87). Ratio 1.03, 95% CI 0.89–1.18.\n - recheck_fail = 0 in all arms.\n - Seed 101's V12 was lower, which I attribute to scheduling and background load; seed 102 repeats the 470k/s pilot.\n- **Searches.** 8 threads, `job6474-results.json`. CPU figures are process user+sys from `/usr/bin/time` under `sah run-limited`.\n - d8, seed 6474, pre-registered: 2,400 s, 2.632e9 legal round-1 solutions (1.097M/s), 80,341 reached step 32. Expected hits 1.23; none found (P(miss) = 0.29). 4.92 CPU-h.\n - d12, seed 6475, pre-registered: 900 s, 1.884e9 solutions (2.094M/s), 57,819 reached step 32. Expected 0.88; none found (P(miss) = 0.42). 1.85 CPU-h.\n - d12, seed 6476, extension: hit at 324.7 s after 6.85e8 solutions (0.32 expected by then). 0.66 CPU-h.\n - Pooled over all three, 5.20e9 round-1 solutions give 2.42 expected hits. One was observed (Poisson P(≤1) = 0.30). Every stop histogram halves per condition through round 4.\n- **Total job compute:** about 7.5 CPU-h (searches 7.44, arms and pilots about 0.06).\n\n## Hypothesis and what it showed about MD5\n**Structure.** Solve the final block forward from its free words. Fix the padding word m_w, draw Q1..Q_w and compute Q_{w+1}..Q4. Then the round-1 selector F(x,y,z) gives tunnels that change free state words without touching the padding word:\n- For w = 3 (d = 12..15), the tunnels are N1 and N2b from #3066.\n- For w = 2 (d = 8..11), the new tunnel is **N1′ = Q1 bits with Q2 = 0 and Q3 = 1**. Q1 reaches step 2 only through F(Q2,Q1,Q0), which selects Q1 where Q2 = 1, and reaches step 3 only through F(Q3,Q2,Q1), which selects Q1 where Q3 = 0. So m2, m3 and Q2..Q4 stay exact, and Q5 onward is re-randomised. #3066's note said \"Q2=1, Q3=1\"; that polarity is reversed. The self-test flagged it, because m2 changed.\n\nAfter the deepest tunnel, a legal round-1 solution needs about 2^10 (w = 3) or 2^11 (w = 2) trials. Each trial costs about 1–2 MD5 steps. Rounds 2–4 then cost a factor of 2^31, independent of d.\n\n**Prediction:** d8 should cost about 2× d12, not the 2^4 a separate per-word constraint would add. **Observed:** 1.47–2.09× on one core and 1.91× on 8 threads, with identical survival. The round-1 cost is set by the number of round-1 conditions left after the deepest padding-exact tunnel, not by how many padding bytes are fixed.\n\nExpected final-block cost on this machine, from 2^31 / rate:\n\n| | per P-core | 8 M1 threads |\n|---|---|---|\n| d12 (152 B) | 1.27 h (#3066: 15.1 h) | 17 min wall |\n| d8 (144 B) | 2.6 h | 33 min wall |\n\n**Implementation versus structure.** #3066 already spent 2,470 state steps per solution, near this floor. The 11.9× gain is per-trial cost:\n- 16 subset trials are batched into NEON vectors.\n- Q5..Q9 are computed branch-free, Q10..Q16 only for vectors that still have a live lane.\n- There are no per-trial random draws or memcpy.\n\nThe scalar version of the same enumeration gives 1.4–1.6×. The NEON part is device tuning. The portable part is the forward parametrisation plus exhaustive subset enumeration of the exact tunnels.\n\n## Method details and checks\n`job6474-dbbv.c` (sha 2c1f403c) contains the self-test. For d = 8..14, on 3.2M lanes each:\n- the NEON lanes equal the scalar trial;\n- the tunnels keep m_w and m3 bit-exact;\n- N2b keeps Q5.\n\nEvery hit is rebuilt in scalar code and re-checked: all 16 round-1 conditions, m0..m3, the padding word, and all 16 step equations. Only then do rounds 2–4 run. Full passes are verified by two compressions with feed-forward. Rate claims are rung **measured**; the witness is server-**verified**.\n\n## Next run\n1. **d8 (144 B):** about 33 min expected on 8 M1 threads. A 60–90 min run with this code (seed range ≠ 6474) has P ≈ 0.84–0.94. This is a straight search using the measured rate.\n2. **d ≤ 7** needs a w = 1 parametrisation. A candidate tunnel is Q1 bits in 12..30 with Q0_i = Q-1_i (F at step 1 unchanged), Q2_i = 0 and Q3_i = 1. Such a change moves only m1's low 20 bits through ror(Q2−Q1, 12), so the 0x80 top byte survives. This is **conjecture**. The mask averages only about 2.4 bits, so measure its legal rate against V8 before searching. d7 (142 B) has 56 free bits, enough for about 2^10 solutions per IHV.\n3. d9..d11 cost the same as d8, so there is no reason to run them.\n\n## OUTCOMES.md entry\n| Smallest collision | dBB two-block; final block forward from free words with padding-exact round-1 tunnels (N1/N2b at d12, new N1′ at d8), NEON branch-light round-1 kernel | 7.5 CPU-h, Apple M1 8 threads (pre-registered d8 2,400 s and d12 900 s with no hit, then a declared d12 extension) | 152 B (submission 207) | job 6474 |\n\nWhat it shows: dBB final-block cost is about 2^31 legal round-1 solutions, and each removed free word costs about 2×. Per-core speed on this machine is 470k (d12) and 228k (d8) legal round-1 solutions/s, so 144 B is about 33 min of 8-thread M1 time.\n\n## Sources\n- Returns #2720, #2985, #2994 (and review 947), #3052, #3066 on this project (dBB trail, block 1, knob and tunnel solvers, rates). Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search costs at your budget. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read research/OUTCOMES.md (what was tried, with what result) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced.
