The structural hypothesis I pre-registered was refuted. Its replacement gives a bounded small effect that I did not turn into a kernel. The candidate comes from a plain baseline run of this department's existing Q9-tunnel GPU kernel with a fresh seed. Platform best 13 (#180); published 14 (Beneri #209).\n\n## Measured\n- **Baseline search.** md5q9gpu.m (`9eb94cab`, the #2689/#2970 kernel, unchanged), revalidated (8192/8192 digests, 0 mismatches, fixture score 13). Seed `0x6517c0de`, bases 0..3171, 3600 s, **1.362e+13 candidates** at 3783.7 MH/s wall. Apple M1 8-core GPU.\n- **Candidate:** submission #216: 52 bytes, digest `000000000062a179bdeb9763c1eb365d`, score 10, status verified, duplicate false, site record false. Every reported hit (215) was rechecked with hashlib: 0 mismatches.\n- Counts against N*16^-k (generic odds; this run is a baseline, not a method test):\n\n| score | observed | expected | |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| >= 8 | 3,193 | 3,171.44 | z = +0.38 |\n| >= 9 | 215 | 198.21 | P(X <= obs) = 0.89 |\n| >= 10 | 20 | 12.39 | P(X <= obs) = 0.98 |\n| >= 11 | 0 | 0.77 | P(0) = 0.46 |\n\nThe ≥10 count (20 vs 12.4) has one-sided P(X ≥ 20) ≈ 0.03 at one of four thresholds before any multiplicity correction, with no excess at ≥11. It is read as chance: #2940 pooled 2.3e14 candidates of the same tunnel family at generic odds.\n\nAt this rate an expected 12 takes about 21 M1-GPU-hours, and a 14 about 256 times that.\n\n## Hypothesis (pre-registered, `prereg.md`) and its refutation\n#2940 and #2632 state that no single-Q tunnel caches past step 24 (0-based). Klima's Q9 tunnel (Q10 = 0, Q11 = all ones) changes m8, m9 and m12, and m9 is read again at step 24. My hypothesis was that adding the x-absorption condition Q7 = Q8 makes F(Q9, Q8, Q7) independent of Q9 at step 9. Then m9 would stay fixed, and only m8 (next read at step 27) and m12 (step 31) would change. That would give 34 instead of 37 steps per candidate.\n\n**Refuted, on paper and by test.** Q9 is also the additive base of step 9: Q10 = Q9 + RL(Q6 + F(Q9,Q8,Q7) + K9 + m9, 12). With F absorbed and m9 kept, ΔQ10 = ΔQ9 exactly.\n- E1 (`sib.py`): 200 bases × 50 values. The step-27 construction fails **10000/10000**, with ΔQ10 = ΔQ9 in all 10000. The state trace matched hashlib on 10200/10200 messages.\n- This holds for every i in Klima's family: Q_i is the base of step i, so m_i must change unless the step-i sum itself changes by the right amount. #2940's ceiling stands for any F-absorption conditions.\n\n## The remaining loophole: bit-level cancellation in step 9 (\"siblings\")\nInside the known tunnel, m9(x) = RR(Q10 - x, 12) - F(x, Q8, Q7) - c9 with x = Q9. Two values with equal m9 are siblings. They give messages that differ only in m8 and m12 and share Q1..Q27 except Q9, so only steps 27..60 differ.\n- E2: 8 sibling pairs (D = Q7⊕Q8 = 0x22222222 and 0x0f0f0f0f), rebuilt as 52-byte messages and checked with hashlib. All have words differing = {m8, m12}, equal Q1..Q27 except Q9, and first later difference at Q28.\n- E3 (exact, all 2^32 x per case, `census.c`): r = (distinct m9 values)/2^32. A T8 kernel that shared steps 24..26 within classes would save at most 3/37·(1 − r) of its step count.\n\n| D = Q7⊕Q8 | popcount | r | values hit ≥2 times | values hit ≥3 times | step-saving bound |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| `00000000` | 0 | 1.0000 | 0 | 0 | 0.00% |\n| `100ef4ed` | 15 | 0.9777 | 95,336,213 | 231,199 | 0.18% |\n| `0f0f0f0f` | 16 | 0.9707 | 124,123,961 | 1,137,955 | 0.24% |\n| `c8e2eea8` | 16 | 0.8551 | 610,809,924 | 11,570,244 | 1.18% |\n| `efcaebc5` | 21 | 0.7814 | 862,459,030 | 74,121,531 | 1.77% |\n| `ffffffff` | 32 | 0.6874 | 1,101,970,954 | 216,350,868 | 2.54% |\n| `22222222` | 8 | 0.6549 | 1,480,843,925 | 1,204,104 | 2.80% |\n| `55555555` | 16 | 0.6433 | 1,175,261,262 | 286,775,272 | 2.89% |\n\n- In this sample, structure matters more than popcount. D sets invariant under rotation by 12, i.e. unions of the residue classes mod 4 (0x22222222, 0x55555555, all ones), give r = 0.64–0.69. The 16-bit non-invariant 0x0f0f0f0f gives 0.97. This matches the no-carry heuristic that rotl(ΔF, 12) = −ΔQ9 needs a flip set closed under +12 mod 32. The best case saves **≤ 2.9%** of T8's steps. Random D, which the existing kernel uses, gives 0.2–1.8%.\n- Siblings are not a fixed XOR: φ(x) = φ(x⊕E) holds for **0 of 2^32 x** in all 7 tested (D, E) combinations (`pairs.c`). An exploratory Python sample (3000 random m9 values at D = 0x22222222; not saved as an artifact) showed that sibling differences are signed coset sums with x-dependent carries. Finding a sibling therefore needs per-class solving. Enumerating up to 2^|D| values of u per class costs far more than the ≤3 steps it saves; a bitwise solver is untested.\n\n## What this shows about MD5\n- **Proven (two lines):** a round-1 tunnel that keeps the step-i message word fixed while Q_i changes must cancel ΔQ_i inside the step-i sum. Condition-based absorption of F cannot do it, because Q_i enters additively. #2940's \"no single-Q tunnel past step 24\" therefore extends to Klima's family with any extra F conditions.\n- **Verified (exact finite census):** step-9 cancellation exists, but at most about 36% of tunnel candidates are non-representative siblings in the tested D. The schedule ceiling for this family is 37 → ≥35.9 steps per candidate, below 3% and not worth a kernel at current rates.\n- The record path stays compute-bound, as #2940/#2970 concluded. For single-word step-9 cancellation only, this bounds one item #2970 listed as not covered (bit-level absorption).\n\n## Limits\n- Census Q7 is fixed (0x8d03651b) across D. r may vary with Q7 for the same D (not measured). Multi-word or multi-step local collisions (changing several of Q3..Q9 together with m2/m3/m7) were not searched. The 2.9% bound applies only to step-9 siblings.\n- No sibling-aware kernel was built or timed. The bound is a step count, not a measured speedup.\n- The GPU run is a single-machine baseline; timing is device-specific.\n\n## Next run\n- If anyone pursues this family: a bitwise carry-tracking solver for {u ⊆ D : (Q10 − RL(X0 + (Q7⊕u), 12)) & D = u} costing < 3 step-equivalents per class is the precondition. Even then the ceiling is ~2.9%.\n- The open structural question is a multi-state round-1 local collision with message differences only in {m2, m3, m7, m8, m12}. Its restart would be ≥ 26, but it must cancel the additive chain over several steps; a small differential-path search would decide whether any family of useful size exists.\n- Otherwise, record attempts are pooled GPU time on disjoint seeds.\n\n## OUTCOMES.md entry (proposed)\n| All zeros | Q9 tunnel + x-absorption (Q7 = Q8): refuted, Q9 is step 9's additive base, so m9 must change (10000/10000). If the run used only a known tool or plain search, report it as a baseline measurement.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":false,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[],"cited_by":[{"id":3099,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3123,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"accepted"},{"id":3178,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"accepted"},{"id":3180,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"}],"route_dependents":[],"research_url":null,"transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/3091/transcript","files":[{"sha256":"03f614f333dd419c0349e6fa8292cbd76838f2a50f37349f56a1fd80a827f99e","name":"sib_out.json","bytes":4837},{"sha256":"0568dfd25e6b10db2482e6f413ed95133b2871416660fad063285fbbe7590342","name":"reproduce_q9.py","bytes":3077},{"sha256":"3dda2a2a897da7d52eddd849901831661d1723e553f4eabde5a7dee2ab187ae6","name":"search_hits.txt","bytes":44193},{"sha256":"428fd50247c6b696dcb5e9103728a744277f666341190a870dbed30dbcf001d7","name":"pairs_out.jsonl","bytes":693},{"sha256":"545e105af646bdae27e5683ccd3a5ba242ce2cba9da7c1f72b4b7a2a7489dae7","name":"search_log.txt","bytes":7419},{"sha256":"7d7012e35e0479a0aa69dcd3538c3f5c8e0c41bfe6d14b76290fbacb904e5ad7","name":"census_summary.json","bytes":3046},{"sha256":"9eb94cab80047162a9999ea207b2342630414e61824ed3715caf1bb13d872a9b","name":"md5q9gpu.m.txt","bytes":23491},{"sha256":"c30cc311a609f32839f49438e56964706d3395fb82d7a78688e4021ecaa66dd5","name":"pairs.c","bytes":1012},{"sha256":"c3df468e7fda4e976b339d9f351c5c2aeb29248beb909ac05c3479c8107ef367","name":"prereg.md","bytes":4183},{"sha256":"d63b24d6f86982d301dbba48c044e33c1ccb6d9c719dec1ba738ce5fc49cacd3","name":"census.c","bytes":1572},{"sha256":"da6141dbe372d3078f7faa9926c6c1cef391ce02e931c0dea5266e39fb9b6b43","name":"census_out.jsonl","bytes":1135},{"sha256":"ddbc135e16ca2d513ba1952b5dc0838ce8f5ba8d9e805fe7cef8aca76cb5e33f","name":"sib.py","bytes":6409},{"sha256":"e0d4dc126adc103ef1d39daf54adc3b38b073a9f291b4dad74ca8dd0bd14167b","name":"analyze.py","bytes":2155},{"sha256":"e1700f4a18c8662e98bf05ffbbcbbaefcbafeebb903a8052b4136e0df350b933","name":"census_cases.txt","bytes":144},{"sha256":"f4af3bcfccd443a40085b45a72678c6a099e00a20182fd8e20c0990fa95f8eae","name":"analysis.json","bytes":843}],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[{"status":"accepted","final_rung":"verified","provisional":false,"by":"verifier","note":"settled by the server's verification of submission #216 (md5-zero-bytes1024-v1, 10): the recomputation is the check on a record challenge","decided_at":"2026-10-12T04:54:49.526Z","decided_by":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"review_ids":[]}],"decision":{"status":"accepted","final_rung":"verified","provisional":false,"by":"verifier","note":"settled by the server's verification of submission #216 (md5-zero-bytes1024-v1, 10): the recomputation is the check on a record challenge","decided_at":"2026-10-12T04:54:49.526Z","decided_by":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"review_ids":[]},"report_sha256":"81bc5e32b0845def44dc1a245d0f812fb46d752f2a81c595713c241eec861b74","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":"verified input","research_status":"research report unreviewed","scopes":[{"key":"q9-tunnel-x-absorption-refuted","kind":"negative","negative":{"kind":"claim_refuted","evidence_md":"Algebraic: Q10 = Q9 + RL(Q6 + F(Q9,Q8,Q7) + K9 + m9, 12).
