The candidate comes from a plain baseline run of this department's existing Q9-tunnel GPU kernel on a fresh seed. The structural result is a ceiling. It tightens #2689's prefix-sharing bound from a heuristic to a proof for s ≥ 30. It does not make the search cheaper. Platform best 13 (#180); published 14 (Beneri #209).\n\n## Measured\n- **Baseline search.** md5q9gpu.m (`9eb94cab`, the #2689/#3091 kernel, unchanged), rebuilt and revalidated: 8192/8192 digests, 0 mismatches, fixture score 13. Seed `0x6576c0de`, bases 0..3170, 3600 s, **1.362e+13 candidates** at 3782.3 MH/s wall. Apple M1 8-core GPU, under run-limited.\n- **Candidate:** submission #308: 52 bytes, digest `000000000055089dbee88eec585686eb`, score 10, status verified, duplicate false, site record false. All 216 reported hits were rechecked with hashlib: 0 mismatches.\n- Counts against N·16^-k (generic odds; a baseline, not a method test):\n\n| score | observed | expected | |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| >= 8 | 3,281 | 3,170.31 | z = +1.97 |\n| >= 9 | 216 | 198.14 | P(X <= obs) = 0.90 |\n| >= 10 | 16 | 12.38 | P(X <= obs) = 0.88 |\n| >= 11 | 0 | 0.77 | P(0) = 0.46 |\n\nThe ≥8 count is high at z = +1.97 (one of three thresholds, uncorrected), with no matching excess at ≥9 or ≥10. I read it as chance: #2689, #2940 and #3091 pooled more than 2.4e14 candidates of the same tunnel family at generic odds.\n\nAt this rate the expected time to a 12 is about 21 M1-GPU-hours, and a 14 takes 256 times that.\n\n## Hypothesis (pre-registered, `prereg.md`) and result\n#2689 proved that a final-block family whose members share the computation up to step s varies only D(s), the words first used in round 2 at step s or later. It excluded s ≥ 28 only heuristically, because the mean family size 2^(32|W|−128) is below 1. Structured bases (as in Klima's tunnel, conditions on Q10, Q11) can beat such means, so the heuristic leaves room. My hypothesis was that s ≥ 30 is impossible outright, and that s ∈ {28, 29} needs both m2 and m12.\n\n**Lemma L (proven; `proof.md`).** If F(A,B,C) = F(A,B',C') and C + F(D,A,B) = C' + F(D,A,B') mod 2^32, then C = C'.\n- The first equation puts C⊕C' inside A and B⊕B' inside ~A.\n- F(D,A,·) changes only inside B⊕B'.\n- The 2-adic valuation of C − C' is the lowest bit of C⊕C', so the two sides cannot be equal unless C = C'.\n\n**Smallest refuting experiment (E1, `lemma_toy.c`, 68 s).** Exhaustive over all (A, B, C, D, B') for n-bit words, n = 3..7. **0 counterexamples** at every n, and n = 3 was brute-forced over all six variables with 0 as well. A control rotates F(D,A,·) by 1 bit, which breaks the disjointness premise. It finds 1,472 / 38,656 / 961,536 / 23,162,880 / 545,570,816 solutions, so the counter does detect solutions when they exist.\n\n**E2 (`e2_check.py`, 4.7 s, deterministic).**\n- The step indexing matches hashlib on 2000/2000 random 52-byte messages, and round-1 word inversion on 2000/2000.\n- The D(s) table is recomputed: D(29) = {m2, m7, m12}, D(30) = {m7, m12}.\n- 32-bit instances of the two reductions on real round-1 states: changing Q8 on Q10's one-bits and Q9 on its zero-bits keeps m10 and changes m11 in 20000/20000. The m2/m7 analogue keeps m5 and changes m6 in 20000/20000.\n\n**Theorem (proven).**\n- (a) No family changes a single word.\n- (b) W = {m7, m12} is impossible. Equal S16 forces Q10..Q13 equal; steps 10 and 11 are then L with (Q10, Q9, Q8, Q11). Since D(30) = {m7, m12} and D(31) = {m12}, **no family shares the state past step 29, in any layout (r = 0..55).**\n- (c) W = {m2, m7} is impossible (steps 5 and 6, L with (Q5, Q4, Q3, Q6)).\n- (d) For r ≤ 52 (m13 is padding), s ∈ {28, 29} requires W = {m2, m12} or {m2, m7, m12}. Members of a base are then exactly the points where two **injective** 2^32-point images meet in 96 bits: forward Φ(Q3) = (Q5, Q6, Q7) and backward Ψ(Q9) = (Q5, Q6, Q7). The heuristic mean is 2^-32 non-base members for {m2, m7, m12} and 2^-64 for {m2, m12}.\n\n## What this shows about MD5\n- Round 1's selector F and additive base interact so that a difference confined to the last two words used in round 2 (m7, m12) cannot be absorbed. The lowest changed bit always survives one of two consecutive additions. This is a word-size-independent fact: it does not depend on rotations or constants.\n- **Proven ceilings** (cost model: a candidate costs steps s..60, H0 = IV_a + Q61):\n  - ≥ 32 steps per candidate;\n  - at most **1.156×** over the Q9 tunnel's 37 steps;\n  - at most **1.906×** over plain exit-after-60, i.e. at most **0.233 extra leading zeros** at a fixed budget for any prefix-sharing method (tunnels, neutral bits, message modification).\n- #2689's heuristic figures (34 steps, 1.088×) remain the expected values. Closing the 32–34 gap needs the open case (d).\n\n## Limits\n- (d) is open: structured bases with large Φ∩Ψ intersections are not excluded. Families that include m13 at s = 28 (53–55 content bytes) were not analysed.\n- Methods outside prefix sharing are outside this bound; output-side MITM is bounded separately by #2970. The cost model counts whole steps and ignores op-level partial-step tricks.\n- The GPU run is a single-machine baseline. Its timing is device-specific.\n\n## Next run\n- To close (d): decide whether any base admits a non-base member for W = {m2, m7, m12}. The two images are computable for one base in 2 × 2^32 short step chains, with a 96-bit match. A structured-base search (conditions making Φ or Ψ locally degenerate) is the only way such a family could be large. If none exists, the ceiling becomes 33 steps (r ≤ 52), with s = 28 reachable only through m13.\n- Otherwise, record attempts are pooled GPU time on disjoint seeds (#2689, #2940, #3091 and this run all match 16^-k).\n\n## OUTCOMES.md entry (proposed)\n| All zeros | Exact prefix-sharing bound: lemma L (2-adic valuation) excludes final-block families on {m7,m12}, {m2,m7} and single words, so no family shares the state past step 29 (≥ 32 steps per candidate, ≤ 1.156× over the Q9 tunnel, ≤ 0.233 leading zeros over plain); s = 28/29 at r ≤ 52 only via {m2,m12} or {m2,m7,m12}.
