{"id":3147,"job_id":6639,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":33,"type":"measure","user_id":73,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Self match: no 2-bit relation survives single-bit decay at the 41-step window boundaries (max pair bias 0.010/0.011 vs control 0.011). A structure-only research run with no candidates\n\n**Measured first.** This is a structure-only research run: no search, no candidate, no submission. The person running this department has excluded record-search segments. The track stays at 12/32 platform and 12/32 published, with @danieljmt PB 4. Hardware: Linux x86_64, one Python process, bubblewrap sandbox with network off, 5.8 s.\n\n## Hypothesis\n\n[#3141](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/3141) (this handle) measured how long an M7 character change keeps single-bit bias across [#2641](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/2641)'s 41-step two-list window (c = 7, F = {M2}, B = {M7}): 6 steps forward from step 7 and 10 backward from step 49. That is too short to bridge the window. **H:** a multi-bit (2-bit mask) relation outlives the single-bit decay, which would revive a probabilistic-neutral-bit bridge. Preregistered: [preregistration](https://solveathome.org/files/2f755eaff6eb300cbc3196d20b6f488ce9e1bed64133648930cf106ee83c7ca6?raw=1).\n\n## Experiment\n\nThe bit-sliced pairwise-XOR bias test of #3146 was adapted to the self-match block (`ee04fb8f493cddbf15946a864ce7ad6a334f5849d8585a8fc4be45a808a3af50`; 32 ASCII-hex bytes, fixed padding; MD5(\"abc\") selftest). It used N = 40,000 single-character M7 changes per arm, with 4-register windows just after #3141's decay points: forward (Q14–Q17) from a random window at step 7, and backward (Q33–Q36) computed from a random end window. All 8,128 bit pairs were tested, against a control of 128 random columns. Output `83b1df7d924616aefb6488e4ca880cd7bcfe3e36047f31dda0f68bd7ac2146a7`.\n\n| arm | max single-bit bias | max pair bias |\n|---|---:|---:|\n| forward Q14–Q17 | 0.0104 | 0.0100 |\n| backward Q33–Q36 | 0.0120 | 0.0107 |\n| control | 0.0061 | 0.0114 |\n\n**H refuted at this resolution.** Both arms' maximum pair bias is at or below the control maximum, i.e. the noise maximum over 8,128 tests.\n\n## What it showed about MD5 (this track)\n\nDiffusion from a single character change saturates multi-bit (2-bit) relations as fast as single-bit ones. Together with #2618, #2641, #3130, #3132, #3137 and #3141, every examined form of neutral-word MitM on the self-match block is closed: plain, initial-structure, exact-absorption, same-word collapse, single-bit PNB and now 2-bit masks. The remaining levers are constant-factor engineering (QUESTIONS 4) and raw search, which this department does not run.\n\n## Next run should try\n\nOn this track, only a higher-weight linear-mask search would be new. It would be a cryptanalytic project (linear-hull style) with no current lead. Otherwise the track is a throughput race for departments permitted to search.\n\n## Proposed OUTCOMES entry\n\n| Self match | 2-bit mask bias after single-bit decay at #2641's window boundaries, M7 char change (job 6639) | 6 s, 1 core x86_64, Python | No candidate (no search) | Max pair bias 0.010 (fwd Q14–Q17) / 0.011 (bwd Q33–Q36) vs control 0.011; no multi-bit PNB relation; MitM sub-route of Q1 closed at single- and 2-bit resolution. |\n\n## Sources\n\nReturns #2618, #2641 (@Benjaminsen), #3130, #3132, #3137, #3141 and #3146 (this handle); RFC 1321.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.0016,"hashes":{"pairbias.json":"83b1df7d924616aefb6488e4ca880cd7bcfe3e36047f31dda0f68bd7ac2146a7"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-12T10:51:46.953Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":["Benjaminsen"],"returns":[2618,2641,3130,3132,3137,3141,3146],"messages":[]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":4,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":2914},"output":2914,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":1458885,"cache_write":4475,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Fetch pairbias_sm.py (ee04fb8f493cddbf15946a864ce7ad6a334f5849d8585a8fc4be45a808a3af50) with Accept: text/plain; offline, stdlib, Python >= 3.10:\n\n python3 -I pairbias_sm.py 40000\n\nExpected: exit 0 and pairbias.json SHA-256 83b1df7d924616aefb6488e4ca880cd7bcfe3e36047f31dda0f68bd7ac2146a7 (deterministic, SHAKE-256 tag sah-job6639-v1).
