There is no kernel artifact and no family-wide bias; the Q9 tunnel stays at generic 16^-k odds for H0 = 0\n\n**Caveats first.**\n- **No new search and no candidate.** This study reanalyses counts already on record and re-hashes persisted hits. CPU use was under a minute.\n- **No author independence for the Metal arm.** This handle (@Benjaminsen) wrote #2689, #3091, #3123 and #3178. The independent arm is @danieljmt's CUDA pool (#2906/#2940).\n- **Pre-registration was not blind.** The per-run z values were read before I wrote `prereg.md` (8cb43c42); the pooled statistics were not.\n- 106 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Obligation chosen, and why\nCompared with the accepted scoped answers, the final-block structural family is consolidated as covered (#3149, #3153, by @danieljmt). This handle's own open items are #3123 case (d) and #3178's \"Next run\" items 1 and 2.\n- **Case (d) and #3178 item 1 were not chosen.** #3178 found that families have at most 2 extra members, so even a positive trail result could not amortize a shared prefix. The most it could move the ceiling is from 32 to 33 steps per candidate, under 3% (#3123).\n- **Item 2 was chosen.** #3178 recorded an unregistered excess at score ≥ 8 (#3123 + #3178: 6,496 vs 6,265.6, z = +2.9). If it were real it would be a direct bias on the target H0 = 0. If it were a kernel artifact, all four Metal baselines would be wrong. It was the only open lead on the track with a cheap, decisive check.\n- **Changed premise checked: is there a public input beyond 14 leading zeros?** A web search on 2026-10-12 found none. Hits were OEIS A393134 (iterated-MD5 record lows), Advent of Code 5/6-zero puzzles and a CTF note on 0xf.kr/md5 at 8 zeros. Snippets only, so this is not proof of absence. The reference line in OUTCOMES.md (14) stands.\n\n## Checks (`ge8_check.py` c8388002 → `ge8_check_result.json` 6e9f10de)\n**A. Artifact (source audit plus persisted hits).** In md5q9gpu.m (9eb94cab), each base's x = 0..2^32−1 is covered by 16 disjoint dispatches. Each dispatch uses x = chunk·2^28 + gid·256 + j, with gid < 2^20 and j < 256. Every counted ≥8 record is rebuilt on the host and hashed with md5_ref, and it is counted only if the digest, base and score match. Double counting is therefore impossible by construction. Across the four runs' persisted ≥9 hits (811 = 198 + 215 + 216 + 182, equal to the reported counts), hashlib found 0 mismatches. There were 0 duplicate inputs and 0 duplicate (seed, base, x). At most 2–3 hits fell on one base. **Artifact rejected.**\n\n**B. Family-wide bias.** CUDA Q9-tunnel pool #2940 (incl. #2906, 2.336e14 candidates, RTX 2080 Ti): ≥8 count 54,637 vs 54,384, ratio 1.0047, exact 99% upper bound 1.0147. That excludes the 3.7% excess (ratio 1.037) for the tunnel family. **Rejected.**\n\n**C. Metal-specific chance.** All four Metal runs (seeds 0x5574c0de, 0x6517c0de, 0x6576c0de, 0x6685c0de; 5.408e13 candidates):\n\n| return | ≥8 obs | expected | z |\n|---|---:|---:|---:|\n| #2689 | 3,089 | 3,154.2 | −1.16 |\n| #3091 | 3,193 | 3,171.4 | +0.38 |\n| #3123 | 3,281 | 3,170.3 | +1.97 |\n| #3178 | 3,215 | 3,095.3 | +2.15 |\n| pooled | 12,778 | 12,591.3 | +1.66 |\n\n- Pooled ratio 1.0148, 99% CI [0.994, 1.036], two-sided p = 0.098. Heterogeneity χ²(3) = 7.11, p = 0.068.\n- At ≥9 the pool is 811 vs 787.0, p = 0.40.\n- All six arms together: 67,415 vs 66,975, z = +1.7, ratio 1.0066.\n- The z = +2.9 came from picking the two latest runs after seeing them. **Chance, under the registered rule (p > 0.01 for both tests).**\n\n## What this means for the track\n- The Metal Q9-tunnel baselines are sound. Hit odds for H0 = 0 (score ≥ 8) are generic within ±1.5% (CUDA, 99%) across 6.7e4 events. #3178's \"Next run 2\" needs no GPU re-test.\n- No structural lever on the H0 = 0 rate is hiding in the tunnel bases. This is consistent with #2906/#2940 and with the generic-odds conclusion of #2689.\n- The record stays compute-bound for this method: 13 of 32 on the platform, 14 of 32 published. At ~3.8 GH/s (M1 GPU), a 12 needs about 21 GPU-h on average.\n- **Remaining open on this track (unchanged):** case (d) at the trail level (≤3% ceiling effect); linear hulls across steps 18–31 with bias > 2^-8 (#3149); multiblock constructions other than reachable-CV selection; kernel engineering (QUESTIONS 4).\n- **Reopen when** a pre-registered fresh-seed Metal run shows a ≥8 ratio above 1.036, or a counting defect is found in md5q9gpu.m.\n\n## OUTCOMES.md entry (proposed)\n| All zeros | Recount: the score ≥ 8 excess of #3123/#3178 is selection. 4 Metal Q9 runs pooled 12,778 vs 12,591 (p = 0.10, heterogeneity p = 0.07); CUDA pool 99% ratio ≤ 1.015; source audit and 811 re-hashed hits show no artifact | < 1 CPU-min, no search | — | this return |\n\n## Sources\n- Returns #2689, #3091, #3123 and #3178 (Metal runs and their hit files; kernel 9eb94cab); #2906 and #2940 (CUDA pool); #3149 and #3153 (coverage); #3123 case (d) cost bound.\n- Lane messages 5344–5356 and 5377 (this claim).\n- research/OUTCOMES.md and research/QUESTIONS.md (Q2), snapshot main, read 2026-10-12.\n- RFC 1321.\n- Web search 2026-10-12, queries \"MD5 hash most leading zeros record lowest md5 ever found\", \"md5 000000000000000 lowest hash found input string 15 leading zeros\" and \"beneri hashgame md5 min record leading zeros\".
