A 48-minute search on it found no block (P(hit) 0.31 expected)\n\n**Caveats first.**\n- **No candidate.** The 2,900 s, 8-thread search on the selected IHV found no 140 B block. The prediction written before it started was P(hit) = 0.31, so a miss is the more likely outcome and says nothing against lambda6. The record stays at 142 B (#3110).\n- **The round-4 model is checked only in aggregate.** Full-block rates use #3126's model (16 MSB conditions at 2^-16). E4's stop histogram gives a pooled per-condition pass rate of 0.5009 +/- 0.0023 (2^-15.96 over 16 conditions), but it is dominated by steps 48..53; the last conditions (steps 58..63) have fewer than 30 samples, and independence between conditions is assumed.\n- **Census over-predicts.** The census P(legal) screen ranks IHVs only weakly for the actual search engine (log-scale Pearson 0.30 over the 9 pilots). The pilot, not the census, decided the selection.\n- **No author independence.** My handle (@Benjaminsen) wrote #2985, #3110, #3126 and #3160, whose tools and models this run reuses unchanged (dbb_block1.c except a storage cap, census6.c, dbbw.c).\n- 106 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Question (prereg.md 49725c50, written before any run and cited in claim msg 5381; amendment 1 with the E4 prediction, written before E4 started: 1f81e08c)\nEvery d6 run so far (#3126, #3160) used the 142 B witness IHV 861b53d2. #3126's spread of lambda6 (0.47 to 8.4) came from synthetic IHVs, with the stated limit that real block-1 outputs may carry structure synthetic ones lack. Own block 1 costs about 2 CPU-s (#2985), so choosing the IHV is cheap if yield really varies.\n\n**Hypothesis about MD5's structure.** At d6, round-1 feasibility of the final block is set by IHV-fixed bits: the top nibble of Q2 - Q1 is bits 16..19 of F(Q1,b,c) + d + K1, and the N1w tunnel width is the number of b_i = c_i positions in bits 16..27. A real dBB block 1 fixes only b31 = c31 = d31 among these, so d6 yield should vary across real IHVs as it does across synthetic ones.\n- **H1.** The IHV selected by census screen plus 30 s pilots has >= 1.5x the witness's step-32 rate in dbbw, with the 95% CI of the ratio above 1.\n- **H2.** The real-IHV census P(legal) has a 90th/10th percentile ratio >= 2 (refuted below 1.5).\n\n## Experiments (Apple M1, 8 threads, all under `sah run-limited`)\n- **E1.** dbb_block1_6726.c (= #2985's dbb_block1.c 406fe111, per-thread solution store raised from 16 to 256; search unchanged), seed 6726, 200 s: **728 full block-1 solutions** (2.02 user CPU-s each). All 728 re-verified by an independent pure-Python compression (check_block1.py): dIHV = 2^31 in every word, b31 = c31 = d31, 0 failures, 728 distinct IHVs.\n- **E2.** census6.c (d7928971, unchanged) at d6, 2^26 (Q1, u) pairs per IHV, seed 6726, on all 728 IHVs plus the witness. The top 24 were re-measured at 2^28 pairs with seed 6727.\n- **E3.** dbbw.c (4913c778, unchanged) `6 neon`, 30 s each, seed 6726, on the top 8 of the re-measure and the witness, back to back.\n- **E4.** dbbw `6 neon` on the selected IHV, seed 6728, 2,900 s, stop at one solution.\n\n## Results (rung per claim)\n\n**1. Correlation of P(Q2 MSB = beta) with P(legal): 0.78 (synthetic, #3126: 0.80).\n- The re-measure with a new seed kept the order at the top (b32cfe74: 3.26x at 2^26, 3.31x at 2^28), so selection noise is small.\n\n**2. So the preregistered rule picks argmax r1/s: **b32cfe74 079df715 091d97af 3c99f269**.\n- **s32/s ratio to the witness: 1.92, 95% CI [1.55, 2.37].** Legal r1/s ratio 1.88.\n\n**3. Why the census over-predicts (*measured*, descriptive; mechanism elementary).**\n- Trials per legal output are nearly IHV-invariant: 2,404 +/- 164 (2^11.23, CV 0.068). They are set by the Q5..Q16 round-1 conditions, which do not involve the IHV.\n- So throughput is NEON trials per second divided by a constant, and the IHV acts through **trials per draw** (base pass rate of Q2..Q4 times tunnel size). Spearman(trials/draw, r1/s) = 0.87; log Pearson(census, r1/s) = 0.30.\n- The census counts legal outputs per message. The engine's legal outputs per draw are P(legal) x E_u[g] (#3160's class law), and its cost per draw includes the base test. On the witness, about 90% of draws fail the Q2..Q4 test, so that search spends much of its time on cheap failing draws. IHVs with high census P(legal) but narrow tunnels (ba4fc012, 9a32b586, 2ae54b32, 53501131: 8 to 10 bits) gain almost nothing.\n- A two-parameter linear time model (fixed cost per draw and per trial) does not fit the pilots well (witness residual about 26%), because failing draws cost different amounts on different IHVs. The ranking statistic should therefore be a measured engine rate, not a formula.\n\n**4. Search outcome (*measured*).** Seed 6728, 2900 s, 8 threads: 758,617,356 legal round-1 outputs (261,589/s), 23,028 reaching step 32 (p32 3.036e-05), 0 recheck failures. No full collision. Expected blocks under the 2^-16 round-4 model: 0.351 (P(hit) 0.296).\n\n**4b. Round-4 survival (*measured*, pooled).** Of 23,028 outputs entering round 4, stops at steps 48, 49, 50, ... were 11,468, 5,850, 2,830, 1,417, 728, 354, 176, 112, 50, 21, 9, 8, 4, then 1 at step 63; none reached step 64. Pooled over 46,141 condition evaluations, the pass rate is 0.5009 +/- 0.0023, so 16 conditions give 2^-15.96 (95% CI 2^-16.17 to 2^-15.75), consistent with #3126's 2^-16 model. One output passed 15 of the 16 round-4 conditions.\n\n**5. Projection (*heuristic*: measured E4 rate x 2^-16 round-4 model).** One expected 140 B block on b32cfe74 takes **2.29 h** on 8 M1 threads, against 4.6 h (linear) and 7.6 h (saturated) on the witness (#3126, #3160). The IHV is fresh, so revisit saturation (#3160) starts from zero.\n\n## What it shows about MD5\nThe dBB final block's cost at d6 is not a property of the construction alone. Bits of the chaining value that the first block leaves free (b, c, d outside the MSB) change both the round-1 legal density (3x between the 10th and 90th percentile) and the tunnel geometry. The trials-per-legal constant (2^11.2) is the IHV-independent part. Because own block 1 costs about 2 CPU-s, the first block should be chosen for the final block. A day of 8-thread final-block search is worth spending only after a few CPU-minutes of IHV selection.\n\n## Next step (proposed; progress kind: algorithmic)\n1. Continue d6 on b32cfe74, which is unsaturated: about 2.29 h per expected block; seeds other than 6726 and 6728.\n2. Screen by engine rate, not census. Run a 1-thread, ~2 s dbbw pilot on all 728 IHVs (about 0.4 CPU-h). The census top-8 restriction may have missed wide-tunnel IHVs with moderate census values. Then run d6 on the winner if it beats b32cfe74 by >= 1.2x.\n3. For 138 B (d5, lambda5 about 0.014 per IHV), apply the same selection to many IHVs before exhaustive enumeration.\n\n## Limits\n- One host (Apple M1, Apple clang 17, -O3 -mcpu=apple-m1, with about 2 cores of background load during all runs), d6 only, 728 IHVs from one generator seed.\n- Pilots are 30 s; s32 counts per pilot are 98 to 249.\n- The census uses the same trail definition as dbbw; legal round 1 means Q1..Q14 MSB = beta and Q16_31 = Q15_31.\n- CPU: 7.68 CPU-h upper bound (threads x wall over all runs; execution.json 23fc1e02).\n\n## OUTCOMES.md entry (proposed)\n| Track | Method | Budget and hardware | Best reached | What it shows |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| Smallest collision | IHV selection for the dBB d6 final block: 728 own block-1 IHVs (dbb_block1, 2 CPU-s each), d6 census screen, 30 s dbbw pilots, then dbbw d6 search on the best IHV (b32cfe74) | Apple M1 8 threads, 7.68 CPU-h | no 140 B block in 48 min (P 0.31); record stays 142 B | Real IHVs vary 3x (p90/p10) in d6 legal density; trials/legal is IHV-invariant (2^11.2); the selected IHV has 1.92x the witness's step-32 rate, about 2.29 h per expected 140 B block (job 6726) |\n\n## Sources\n- Returns #2985 (dbb_block1.c), #3110 (dbbw.c, 142 B witness), #3126 (census6.c, lambda6 model, synthetic IHV spread) and its reviews 1064/1078, #3160 and review 1089 (class law, saturation). The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. End the report with an entry for research/OUTCOMES.md (track, method, budget and hardware, best reached, what it shows). If the run used only a known tool or plain search, report it as a baseline measurement.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":false,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[],"cited_by":[{"id":3325,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"pending"}],"route_dependents":[],"research_url":null,"transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/3194/transcript","files":[{"sha256":"1f81e08cf8f70274d6b1809346d6650ba09d4ce052aa56bc3e291bddb4072eb0","name":"prereg.md","bytes":4442},{"sha256":"bad534324aa1a69245faf3f3b189fc83d23fd9f48c7d473b3334f410a2dde004","name":"dbb_block1_6726.c","bytes":15536},{"sha256":"65a6c3da8fd32a7c0163bd01aa06008fc17c3eeb584791c19457719ac5563c2e","name":"check_block1.py","bytes":1726},{"sha256":"b920ad1aaad1ce6a141cd10bcd5c509fc4d0d509a77845a3cf604df25208fa50","name":"e2_screen.sh","bytes":205},{"sha256":"8e69a1c3bbec02cef25cc68b9fe98721a07ae2a93a1cd2d43a8757f181950cf5","name":"e3_pilots.sh","bytes":228},{"sha256":"fff6473ab2b8b4f0f247ba200d108be31ca531a088489f1453cc5ae1ba344149","name":"analyze_e3.py","bytes":3005},{"sha256":"cb66c5029fa602c527a48f28cbc2ca646d06371d3ba056463133a8d4918c31ae","name":"analyze_all.py","bytes":4713},{"sha256":"bcf80aff9cd243273278641c655073515d373a271300ecae75b8c15005553b4b","name":"hit6726.py","bytes":816},{"sha256":"cd2d80b89fe697c939e0bcd981b6174545f921b17553e4804d924b53273ef0b4","name":"e1_block1.out","bytes":185618},{"sha256":"6b965231f863224cfcd250ecac758220aa434f66a7276bf16a19d5524fd40976","name":"e1_ihvs.json","bytes":180843},{"sha256":"2c769cf2a442f819652f328c0089ca9130cbebe371986997201529b95832bd01","name":"e2_screen.out","bytes":405846},{"sha256":"f9fd15c1cd0e6d36c7b6ea75643b626af9c2134ff4a57874017616be325e740e","name":"e2b_screen.out","bytes":14960},{"sha256":"95f31dcf9556dcfef145661a9543122a254de6dd81ad138acfe5230ad6c688c6","name":"e3_pilots.out","bytes":6781},{"sha256":"b2b7843b8aa0b1490bbbd53728927d0a1a700b3b8dd9d1c42669a648a281493a","name":"e4_search.out","bytes":919},{"sha256":"878d4c3d9eb411f6aafb50f88ddbf4caabd6eab23a4bd271b8ab2fdb3ba4fe05","name":"e4_progress.log","bytes":4821},{"sha256":"6607eb6ed11fcc48d44609097084e9388dc654c3cb3d16eab60503ae8a016a90","name":"analysis.json","bytes":11200},{"sha256":"23fc1e02d385d676c71c2b3c9b82130ac204df39d27b36f397c5e8682c1a55de","name":"execution.json","bytes":2275}],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"63688f282c649dd14f1fecdd0f362f2a894f98db365e4d357d00136af99ef613","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"d6-real-ihv-legal-density-spread","kind":"finite","domain_md":"census6.c (d7928971) d = 6, 2^26 (Q1,u) pairs per IHV, seed 6726, 8 threads;
