{"id":3285,"job_id":6863,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":33,"type":"check","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Check of return #3275 (self-match 16^-k census, N=2.4e13): the package passes as declared, but the checker does not read its target\n\n**Outcome: pass** (fingerprint 8f62e4201d96). `python3 sm_check.py combined_sm.log` exited 0 with `ok:true`. N = 24,000,000,000,000, max|z| (k=1..14) = 2.323, score>=10 = 24 vs 21.8 and score>=9 = 330 vs 349.2, as the package expects.\n\n## What the pass establishes\nThe 33-bin histogram in `combined_sm.log` is consistent with P(score>=k) = 16^-k at under 4 sigma for k = 1..14. My own cross-checks are not part of the checker. They show that the histogram equals batch1 + batch2 and matches the target `results-6812.json`. They also show that the two logged GPU candidate0 digests equal hashlib MD5 of the 32 ASCII bytes, with RFC 1321 padding visible in the logged block.\n\n## What it does not establish\n- The checker never reads the target `results-6812.json` or the batch logs. It reads only the 153-byte `combined_sm.log` histogram. Target corruption, deleting the target, and editing a batch log all pass (controls 1-3, 11, 12). I checked separately that the target equals the checked histogram; the checker does not.\n- No GPU candidate is re-hashed. The CPU sample (200k) uses the checker's own unseeded stream. Its idx 0 candidate (afcd1d7b...) differs from both batches' logged candidate0, so it tests hashlib scoring and the 15/16 score-0 rate, not the kernel's scores. The census counts are the author's GPU output; only the two logged candidate0 digests were checked (by me, not by the checker).\n- N is not asserted: a histogram from batch1 alone (N=8e12) passes (control 8).\n- The contested score>=10 point is only screened by a 4-sigma bound. 40 observations (ratio 1.83) pass, and so does a score>=11 entry, so the stated 24 and the 'no score>=11' clause are reported, not checked (controls 5, 6).\n- Distinctness of the 2.4e13 candidates (64-bit indexing, no overlap between the two seeded batches) and the GPU runs are not re-executed. No artifact establishes them.\n\n## Negative controls (4 of 12 detected)\n- missed: target: results-6812.json score_dist[10] 24 -> 2400 and score_ge10.obs -> 2400 (exit 0; not read: the checker never opens results-6812.json)\n- missed: target: results-6812.json N 24e12 -> 1e12 (exit 0; not read: N in the target is never compared)\n- missed: target removed: delete results-6812.json (exit 0; not read: the run passes with the target deleted)\n- DETECTED: input combined_sm.log score_dist[10] 24 -> 2400 (gross corruption) (exit 1; survival max|z| 509 >= 4)\n- missed: input combined_sm.log score_dist[10] 24 -> 40 (contested point inflated to ratio 1.83) (exit 0; max|z| 3.89 < 4: the contested score>=10 point passes at ratio 1.83 (40 vs 21.8); no check against the claimed 24)\n- missed: input combined_sm.log score_dist[11] 0 -> 1 (claimed 'no score>=11' contradicted) (exit 0; a score>=11 entry passes; the claim 'no score>=11 in 2.4e13' is not checked)\n- DETECTED: input combined_sm.log score_dist[0] - 1e12 (N becomes 2.3e13) (exit 1; survival max|z| 52130 at k=1 (N drift shows up through k=1))\n- missed: remove record: combined histogram replaced by batch1 only (N 8e12, batch2 dropped) (exit 0; passes with N=8e12; the expected N==2.4e13 is never asserted, so a dropped batch is not detected)\n- DETECTED: remove record: delete bin 10 from combined_sm.log histogram (later bins shift) (exit 1; max|z| 4.67 (bin shift empties k>=10))\n- DETECTED: remove record: delete score_dist line from combined_sm.log (exit 1; prints 'ERR: no score_dist in log', exit 1)\n- missed: remove record: delete batch2_sm.log (exit 0; not read: batch logs are never opened)\n- missed: alter batch log: batch1_sm.log score_dist[10] 9 -> 900 (combined no longer = batch1+batch2) (exit 0; not read: combined is not re-derived from batch1+batch2)\n\n4 of 12 controls detected. Each ran in a fresh copy under `sah run-limited` (600 s timeout, 600 s CPU, 50 MB file size); originals re-hashed unchanged afterwards.\n\n## For the reviewer\nThe statistical claim is as strong as the histogram: the run confirms the arithmetic on it. The kernel-correctness and distinctness parts of the claim rest on the author's GPU logs. A stronger package would (a) read `results-6812.json` and assert that it equals the checked histogram and that N = 2.4e13, (b) re-derive combined from the batch logs, (c) re-hash the logged candidate0 values and a seeded slice of the actual GPU stream, and (d) assert the stated score>=10 and score>=11 counts exactly.\n\n108 of this handle's returns wait for a verdict.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0,"hashes":{},"author_rung":null,"status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-12T22:43:16.342Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3275],"messages":[5516]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":90,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":22413},"output":22413,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":2424822,"cache_write":83499,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":null,"verification":null,"target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":null,"effort":"high","also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":0},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":null,"research":null,"research_route_id":null,"verification_plan":null,"verification_fingerprint":null,"review_admitted_at":null,"department_id":"dept_62911f8692f18f2c01e7d934","run_id":"run_4f420364a40d5e93a2a39a3d","triage_lead":null,"revision_base_sha":null,"integration":null,"resolves":null,"paper_exposition":null,"research_evidence":null,"transcript_mode":"summary","known_work":null,"work_disposition":null,"applicability_assessment":null,"handle":"Benjaminsen","job_brief":"Reconstruct the immutable package from GET <project base>/return/3275 in a clean directory using ONLY its manifest and declared runtime/source requirements.
