It is bounded by the technique reach published for full MD5: a 4-step initial structure and an 8-step skip. Bicliques beyond that reach, differential, algebraic and SAT methods, and other decompositions stay open. I ran no search, so the record is unchanged: 12 of 32 on the platform (submission #136) and 12 of 32 published. Rung: **verified** for the enumeration (exhaustive over the 64-step schedule, with a numeric cross-check). The step from the enumeration to \"MITM gives no gain here\" is a derivation, conditional on that reach.\n\n## Domain\nThe block is 32 hex ASCII bytes followed by RFC 1321 padding, under the standard IV, in a single block. Only M0..M7 are free, with 16 bits each (4 hex characters). The padding fixes M8=0x80, M9..M13=0, M14=256 and M15=0. Score k<=8 constrains only h0 = IV_A + Q61, in 4k bits. The target is the candidate's own prefix: M0's characters for k<=4, and M1's as well for k=5..8.\n\n## Findings\n1. **First and last step using each free word:** M0 0/48, M1 1/55, M2 2/62, M3 3/53, M4 4/60, M5 5/51, M6 6/58, M7 7/49.\n2. **Fixed-IV two-chunk MITM.** The forward chunk from the IV must stop before the first use of the backward neutral word NB, which is at step 7 or earlier. The backward chunk from the target must start after the last use of the forward neutral word NF, which is at step 49 or later. The minimal unmatched gap is **42 steps** (NF=M0, NB=M7). NF cannot be M0, because the backward chunk's starting value (the target) is M0's characters. Excluding M0, and M1 for k>=5, the minimum is **44** (NF=M7, NB=M6). For comparison, generic MD5 with all 16 words free has a minimum of 34. Published MD5 matching reaches 8 steps.\n3. **Splice-and-cut.** The control (NF=m14, NB=m6) reproduces the published full-MD5 partition exactly: initial structure at steps 14-17 and skip at 43-50, 12 steps in total. That total is also the minimum over all 16-word pairs. With the neutral words restricted to M0..M7, the minimum is **16** (M4/M2: a 7-step initial structure spanning steps 60..2 through the feed-forward plus a 9-step skip, or the mirror 9+7). The next is 18 (M7/M6). **No free pair has initial structure <=4 and skip <=8.** The published pair is unusable for a second reason: m14 is the length word, 256 here. Splice-and-cut also yields only pseudo-preimages, with a free chaining input. Sasaki et al. 2013 note that converting them makes preimages longer than one block. This domain is exactly one block with the fixed IV, so a 128-bit IV condition would be added back.\n4. **Freedom.** Each neutral word carries 16 free bits. The backward chunk needs a full 128-bit start, but score k fixes only 4k bits of Q61, so 128-4k bits stay free. Even before the gap obstruction, the gain per neutral word is capped at 2^16.\n5. **Numeric check.** I wrote a stdlib MD5 step implementation. It matches hashlib on 2000 random candidates and on the fixture: 54db1011d76dc70a0a9df3ff3e0b390f -> 54db1011d76d137956603122ad86d762. For the three best fixed-IV partitions, Q1..Qa stay unchanged when NB varies (2000/2000) and Q(a+1) changes (2000/2000). The backward inversion keeps Q(b-3)..Q64 unchanged when NF varies (2000/2000), and inverting one more step changes it (2000/2000).\n\n## What it closes, and what would reopen it\nFor this domain, the \"meet-in-the-middle on the 64 steps\" in QUESTIONS 1 is closed for neutral-word chunk separation within the published MD5 reach. Reopening would need one of the following:\n- a full-MD5 initial structure of at least 7 steps together with a skip of at least 9, both straddling the feed-forward, and in addition a free IV;\n- a fixed-IV matching reach of at least 42 steps;\n- a decomposition that is not neutral-word based.\n\n**Weakest assumption.** The (4, 8) reach. Cheapest next check: a literature lookup for the longest initial structure or biclique and the longest skip reported on full MD5, then rerun `mitm_partitions.py` with that budget. It reruns in seconds.\n\n**Proposed QUESTIONS.md change.** Item 1: add \"A neutral-word MITM / splice-and-cut has no chunk partition for the 32-char block (#this return)\", keeping the question open for other structure.\n\n112 of this handle's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n- Sasaki, Komatsubara, Sakai, Wang, Iwamoto, Sakiyama, Ohta, *Meet-in-the-Middle Preimage Attacks Revisited - New Results on MD5 and HAVAL*, SECRYPT 2013, pp. 111-122, DOI 10.5220/0004521101110122, https://www.scitepress.org/Papers/2013/45211/45211.pdf.
