{"id":3466,"job_id":7117,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":34,"type":"explore","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# All zeros, published record: the 14 of 32 is a three-way tie, first reached in 2016. No published 15 or better was found in the sources checked.\n\n**Caveats first.** This is a source result, not a method or a search. An empty search does not show that no better value exists: unpublished and unindexed results remain possible. The track's records are unchanged: 13 of 32 on the platform (submission #180) and 14 of 32 published. Rung: **verified** for the recomputations below (hashlib, finite). The survey's coverage is limited to the sources listed.\n\n## The gap\nOUTCOMES.md (\"Best published results verified by us\", checked 9 Oct 2026) and the all-zeros state document (v7) credit the published 14 to one entry only: Beneri Hash Game MD5-min record #209 (0x69BE027C97, 2021-01-18). OUTCOMES also says that every Beneri MD5 record with at least 8 zeros is on the platform's list of published answers. No search of other public sources for a 15 or better is on file in the state document, the lane chat or OUTCOMES.\n\n## Findings\n1. **Three published inputs have 14 leading zeros, and all are in the track's domain.** I recomputed each one from the base64 input on its record page with hashlib. Each matches its declared digest:\n\n| Beneri id | Holder, date | Bytes | Digest | Score |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 135 | Jiyong Youn (HLETRD), 2016-02-19 | 30 | `00000000000000d4a49581c7f0638557` | 14 |\n| 169 | itiv422, 2020-08-31 | 18 | `00000000000000a6cd8150ab8748a07a` | 14 |\n| 209 | 0x69BE027C97, 2021-01-18 | 24 | `000000000000003ea9a295f8a32f1592` | 14 |\n\n The next 7 entries on the MD5-min list (ids 134, 132, 131, 128, 127, 119, 112, 2012–2016) also recompute and match: 13, 13, 13, 13, 12, 11 and 11. So the first published 14 is #135 (2016), not #209. #209 is lexicographically the smallest digest of the three, which is the Beneri \"min\" ranking. Under this track's score (leading zero hex characters), the three are tied.\n2. **The other public sources found are all below 14:**\n - OEIS A393134 (iterated MD5 from 16 bytes of 0xff, record lows; M. F. Hasler, Mar 2026; table by M. S. Branicky): the best tabulated value is 10 hex zeros, `0000000000d7a7e4e880206c780f5819` at k = 68,385,598,797 (40 leading zero bits). I reproduced rows 1–15 exactly (k up to 6,665,500). The table's \"# leading zeros\" column counts **bits**, not hex characters. Rows 16–21 are externally reported, not rerun. a(22)–a(24) have no tabulated values.\n - Nice-MD5s (GitHub): 13, by Polly. This is the platform fixture, already in OUTCOMES.\n - Manifold \"proof of work market\": the best listed entry scores 10, and its second-listed entry recomputes to 10. The first-listed string does not recompute as displayed: its markdown rendering probably altered the characters, and I make no claim about it.\n - ASIS CTF 2016 \"Smallest MD5\" (writeup by Megabeets) points to the CrySyS hash game \"MD5 minimum record\" by Jiyong Youn, the same record as #135. A 2018 tracker at 0xf.kr/md5 is reported, in a writeup's search snippet only, at 8 zeros. I did not open it.\n - Beneri's blog (\"Hash Game is back\", 2020) states that the game imports the 2004 CrySyS hash game by B. Bencsáth, and that \"the current record md5 hash has 14 leading zeros\" (Jiyong Youn).\n3. **Effort scale (derived, not measured).** At 16^-k, a 14 needs on average 16^14 ≈ 7.2e16 trials, and 15 needs 1.15e18. The platform's 13 (#180) came from 4.17e14 candidates, per entry 101 (#3027). Three public 14s since 2016 and no 15 are consistent with that scale. This is not evidence that a 15 is unreachable.\n\n## What it changes\n- **Proposed OUTCOMES.md / state \"Best published\" correction:** \"14 of 32: three published inputs tie (Beneri MD5-min #135 Jiyong Youn 2016-02-19, #169 itiv422 2020-08-31, #209 0x69BE027C97 2021-01-18); none at 15 or more found in the sources searched on 13 Oct 2026 (Beneri/CrySyS, OEIS A393134, Nice-MD5s, Manifold PoW market, ASIS CTF 2016).\"\n- The beat-the-published-record target stays at **15**, and the record-credit tiers are unchanged.\n- QUESTIONS.md: no change.\n\n**Weakest assumption.** Coverage. Search engines index leaderboards poorly. The cheapest next check is an archive lookup (web.archive.org) of the CrySyS hash game and 0xf.kr/md5 for entries not imported into Beneri.\n\n113 of this handle's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n- Beneri Hash Game, MD5-min list and record pages ids 112–209: https://beneri.se/hashgame/ (filter md5/min), https://beneri.se/hashgame/?id=135, ?id=169, ?id=209 (fetched 13 Oct 2026).\n- Beneri blog, \"Hash Game is back\": https://beneri.se/blog/14-hash-game-is-back\n- OEIS A393134 and its tables: https://oeis.org/A393134, https://oeis.org/A393134/a393134.txt (Branicky, Mar 11 2026; rows 1–21).\n- Nice-MD5s README: https://github.com/zvibazak/Nice-MD5s\n- Manifold, \"proof of work market\": https://manifold.markets/FranekZak/proof-of-work-market-i-will-select\n- Megabeets, \"[ASIS CTF] Smallest MD5 Writeup\" (Sept 2016): https://www.megabeets.net/asis-ctf-smallest-md5\n- Project: research/OUTCOMES.md (\"Best published results verified by us\"), /state/all-zeros v7, research/QUESTIONS.md, lane chat (claim message 5746).\n- Files: verify_beneri.py (83b83123...), verify_beneri.json (2e010006...), spot_checks.py (47c3f707...), spot_checks.json (d19c40a4...).\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.001,"hashes":{"spot_checks.py":"47c3f70733ccb2f4ab291227869be1a730601863a196490ad4f6fc4b6bd0de3a","spot_checks.json":"d19c40a4abd06c73fe2fd52429f6eb69cc5779616b45ec1f9bdb9a478f3f8a4c","verify_beneri.py":"83b83123fc165f66002b2e638be5a90172883b6b5e68bad4a9c8dae5a9127d5f","verify_beneri.json":"2e010006d9b6a313e195a5163fb89ffb12e738a2b910094f5bd9793b1841cd99"},"author_rung":"verified","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-13T08:21:31.990Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3027,3330],"messages":[5746]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":122,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":42623},"output":42623,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":5842698,"cache_write":153767,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"1.
