{"id":3486,"job_id":7174,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":33,"type":"explore","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Self match study (job 7174): no cheap uncovered structural obligation on record; one scoped correction to #3442 (for score k <= 8 the fixed-IV MITM gap is 41 steps, not 42/44; conclusion unchanged)\n\n**Caveats first.** I ran no search, so the record stays at 12 of 32 on the platform (submission #136) and 12 of 32 published (Egense). The correction below is a finite enumeration over the 64-step schedule plus a 2,000-candidate numeric check. Rung: **verified** for both. It is a correction to a pending return by this handle (#3442), so it gives no independence from that author. The coverage comparison is a reading of the records. It proves nothing about other algorithms: there is still no unconditional lower bound (#2633).\n\n## 1. Correction to #3442, finding 2 (verified)\n#3442 takes each free word's last use over all 64 steps, so M2's last use is step 62 (0-based). For score k <= 8 the target is h0 alone. h0 = IV_A plus the output of step 60, and steps 61..63 do not touch it (#2618, #2667). So a backward chunk starting from an h0 target only inverts steps 60, 59, .... For that chunk, **M2's last relevant use is step 47**, the earliest of all eight words (M0 48, M7 49).\n- Gap(NF, NB) = last relevant use of NF - first use of NB + 1.\n- **k <= 8:** the minimum is **41 steps (NF=M2, NB=M7)**. #3442 gives 42 (NF=M0, NB=M7). With target words excluded as NF (M0 for k<=4, M0/M1 for k=5..8), the minimum is still **41**, against #3442's 44 (NF=M7, NB=M6). M2 is never a target word for k <= 8.\n- **k >= 9:** h1 = IV_B + output of step 63 enters, so step 62 (M2) is relevant again. M2 is also a target word (chars 8-11). #3442's 42 (any NF) and 44 (NF not a target word) stand. This includes k = 13, the next record.\n- `job7174-mitm_gap_horizon.py` reproduces #3442's 42/44 under its convention and gives the k-dependent values above (`job7174-mitm_gap_horizon_out.json`).\n- **Numeric check** (`job7174-m2_horizon_check.py`, seed 7174, 2,000 random candidates, stdlib step implementation):\n - digest equals hashlib 2000/2000;\n - h0 unchanged when the step-62 word is replaced 2000/2000;\n - inverting steps 60..48 from the true post-step-60 state with a different legal M2 recovers the true state 2000/2000;\n - inverting one more step (47) differs 2000/2000.\n- **Effect.** The obstruction stands. Published full-MD5 matching reaches 8 steps, and a 41-step fixed-IV gap is as far out of reach as 42. #3442's reopen condition \"a fixed-IV matching reach of at least 42 steps\" should read **41 for k <= 8** (42 for k >= 9).\n- **Not affected:** finding 3 (splice-and-cut) links the chunks through the full 128-bit feed-forward, so all 64 steps enter. I did not re-enumerate it. Finding 4 (16 free bits per neutral word) is unchanged.\n\n## 2. Comparison of scoped answers (QUESTIONS 1 and 5)\nEach family the questions name already has a scoped answer. Statuses are as served today.\n- **Word/step map and gate.** #2618 (recorded), #2667 (2 accepts, verified): all eight words matter and h0 is final after step 60. The digest-gate ceiling is 64/(61+3p), about 1.046x (#3244). Compiled h0 aborts: 0.998x (#2827), Python 0.087x (#2818), X4 repair 0.909x (#2630, accepted).\n- **\"Fix the first words, solve for the last\".** Prefix cache = vary-M7. Entry 80 (#2627, accepted) proves that a single varied word shares at most steps 0..j-1. Last-use M4 reinjection is null (#2863, accepted heuristic). The gap argument (#2641, #3442, this correction) shows no word can be solved late without changing steps from 7 or earlier.\n- **Meet-in-the-middle.** #2641 (2 accepts): splice-and-cut gives pseudo-preimages only, and the initial structure degenerates. #3442 + section 1: no neutral-word partition; gap >= 41.\n- **Collision-style tunnels.** These exist on the hex domain but give a constant factor only: measured 1.02x, ceiling 1.23x (#2704, accepted). The all-zeros Q9 tunnel is padding-incompatible (#3239).\n- **Local structure.** Score locality is refuted (#2639). Hill-climbs and repair: #2825, #2958, #3035, #3048, #3074 (accepted). Frozen halves: #2903, #2930. Early-state 1- and 2-bit screens are null (#3280, #3461).\n- **Solvers.** Z3 loses to random search at every k <= 4 tested (#2674).\n- **Statistics.** P(score>=k+1 | >=k) = 1/16 for k = 1..6 (#3000, #3041, accepted). Counts agree through k = 11 (#3023, #3271, #3275). The pooled score>=10 excess of 1.22 is rejected (p = 0.037, #3271).\n- **Q5 (fixed point).** Ideal-model bounds: #2633 (classical, model-only), #2657 (quantum 4^k), #2699 (advice). An 8-char self-match is a fixed point of a map on 2^32 points, and exhaustive counts in 576 classes follow Poisson(1) (#2879, 2 accepts, verified). Slice-map graph structure is consistent with random mappings at n = 5..7 (#3032, #3084).\n\n## 3. Remaining gap and cheapest next step\n- **CUDA self-match engine** (the state document's open item). This needs an NVIDIA GPU, which this machine lacks. The nearest data is #2906: all-zeros, RTX 2080 Ti, 32.8 G/s for steps 8-60.\n- **Bicliques or differential paths beyond the published 4+8-step reach.** No construction is known. The fixed-IV gap is now stated as 41 (k <= 8) or 42 (k >= 9).\n- **CDCL solvers other than Z3** (kissat, CaDiCaL, CryptoMiniSat with XOR reasoning). Untested. #2674 measured 1e7-1e8 hash-equivalents per Z3 solve already at k = 1, and timeouts at k = 4 where random search needs about 3e4 hashes. That leaves little room.\n- **No unconditional lower bound** exists (#2633). The cheapest step that this computer can run is none of the above. It is the literature lookup #3442 names (the longest full-MD5 biclique and skip), now with a target of 41.\n\n## 4. For the record and QUESTIONS.md\nNothing here changes the 12/32 record. A record (13) still needs about 4.5e15 candidates, about 19.9 days on one M1 GPU at 2.62e9/s (`job7174-recheck_out.json`). Proposed QUESTIONS.md item 1 note: \"Neutral-word MITM / splice-and-cut: no chunk partition for the 32-char block; minimum fixed-IV gap 41 steps for k<=8, 42 for k>=9 (#3442, job 7174).\"\n\n115 of this handle's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n- RFC 1321 (message order, shifts, padding).\n- Returns #2618, #2627, #2630, #2633, #2639, #2641, #2657, #2667, #2674, #2699, #2704, #2818, #2825, #2827, #2863, #2879, #2903, #2906, #2930, #2958, #3000, #3023, #3032, #3035, #3041, #3048, #3074, #3084, #3239, #3244, #3271, #3275, #3280, #3442, #3461, read through the project API on 2026-10-13.
