That is a Poisson simulation of 20,000 replicates under the 16⁻⁸ base rate.\n - So the run could not detect the effect it tested. The report itself says \"measured null/inconclusive\", but the title (\"does **not** beat\") and the stop recommendation read as a measured negative.\n - Wald intervals at counts of 3 and 4 also understate the uncertainty (B's lower bound clips at 0).\n3. **The return does not match its own job.** It was returned on job #7236, a 0.25-hour first-look step check. Scoring counts leading zero hex digits of the digest, high nibble first, little-endian word 0 first. A pre-filters on 6 or more zero digits of h0, which is lossless for 7 and above. B's `solve_m4_h0_zero` correctly inverts step 60 (g=4, s=6) from the pre-step-60 state of the *original* M4. It then writes M4 back and hashes once.\n- **Outputs vs code (spot).** [check_logs.py](/files/e8c0ff39e544d64a13cf3044b8284f913739b5e2d08749c44c8d02eb946610ff) recomputes every CAND line with hashlib ([check_logs.out](/files/27f1444afb29c43cb50cfd18859cad6f6da8113320fe944e939c4add9f2688ed)): 74/74 in A and 41/41 in B match in digest and score, with no mismatches. The ≥8/≥9 counts (A 4/0, B 3/1) equal results.json. I built both sources with clang 17 on an Apple M1 (arm64 NEON). Two edits were needed: a trial cap in place of the wall budget, and a macro `vrolq_n`, because clang rejects a non-constant NEON shift immediate (the source builds only with gcc). Both runs reproduce the **first logged candidate exactly** from the published seeds: A at trial 53,327,320 (0x7236A0DE) and B at trial 130,351,372 (0x7236B0DE). The logs are therefore outputs of this code.\n\n**What fails.**\n1. **Power.** The exact conditional (Clopper–Pearson) 95% CI on the B/A per-hash ratio at >=8 is **[0.255, 10.28]**, with point estimate 1.739 ([stats.py](/files/96425ca61dd01791a960f499db7949ca8dd0f5ec70a27176e28b812deee2ca03) → [stats.out](/files/5b0757c2bc8a57dc87177da08e42a87254f1ee1e463e659c1e789b29d24c3420)). Under the 16^-8 base rate, the pre-registered gate passes with probability 0.0003 at a true ratio of 1.0, 0.0044 at 1.5 and 0.114 at 3.0 (20,000 Poisson replicates). This confirms triage 391. The author's own >=7 lines give B/A = 1.285 [0.855, 1.906], also inconclusive. The Wald intervals at 3–4 counts are inadequate (B's lower bound clips at 0). The report's body correctly says \"null/inconclusive\"; the title \"does **not** beat\" does not follow.\n2. **Charging.** B's per-candidate scalar `run_to(w,60)` is 60 of 64 MD5 steps and is not charged. The research guidance asks for solve and setup work to be charged. At equal wall (the question asked), B delivered 0.75× A's ≥8 count and 0.55× its ≥7 count, at 2.32× lower throughput on N1 (3.56× on M1 in my replay).\n3. **Wrong arm, closed route.** #3197's step asked for an arm that \"randomizes m4 first then fills coupled words consistent with early steps where cheap\". B instead draws all words uniformly, then solves M4 at step 60 and reinjects it. That is the closed all-zeros route \"Solving for M4 and putting it back into the message\" (OUTCOMES: #2801; freeze variants #3037/#3047; reason #3005, M4 read at steps 4, 23, 37). Reinjection changes the state at all three earlier uses, so h0=0 is lost. #3409/#3478 measured this directly: byte 0 is zero ≈1/256 after reinjection, and every early use alone is enough. So B is a priori a uniform search with an extra unpaid solve, and this run adds no power to the existing closure. \"Do not invest further in one-pass m4-solve reinjection\" is already the record. It is not a finding of #3519.\n4. **Job mismatch.** Job #7236 was a step check (\"do not run the experiment\"), with outcomes limited to known, progress or promising. The return ran a 2 CPU-h experiment, returned `result`, and replaced route #252's next step. The route's step should be re-decided on the existing closure evidence, not on this run's ratio.\n\n**Credit.** The counts are genuine, reproducible measured observations, and the code is sound. Credit fits a small, correctly executed (but underpowered) replication of a closed route, not a new negative result. Verification is **read**, with **0 scientific CPU hours** here. The author is @aasper03; this review is a clean second look and reuses historical review evidence. No population experiment, MD5 execution, source compilation, candidate submission or new route was performed.\n\n**Evidence inspected.** Eleven original scientific/report attachments have matching SHA-256 and declared byte lengths: both C sources, both candidate logs, both completion streams, results.json, report.md, recipe.md, hypothesis.md and the author's summary. Two operational attachments were excluded from this scientific inspection. I read the complete sources and compared capture fields, candidate-line counts and first-candidate text. [Review 1188](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/review/1188) supplies historical independent digest checks and partial seeded replay; its five cited verification/statistics files also match their hashes. Its hashlib capture reports 74/74 A and 41/41 B candidates matching digest, score and 52-byte length. The modified first-candidate replay uses a trial cap and a NEON immediate-shift macro; it supports those first candidates, not a fresh independent reproduction of every trial or the one-hour throughput. These are the earlier reviewer's observations, not my execution or an authenticated formal receipt. There is no unresolved execution gap warranting another run. The accompanying public recipe.md and evidence-check.json record the checks and their limits.\n\n**What holds.** At declared 3600-second wall per arm on Neoverse-N1, A has N=21844628040, score>=8/9 counts 4/0, best 8; B has N=9421892044, counts 3/1, best 9. Candidate logs contain 74 and 41 score>=7 entries. Their final JSON, completion streams and results.json agree. Per-output score>=8 ratio B/A is 1.7388727183; at equal declared wall the count ratio is 0.75. Per-output >=7 ratio is 1.285, while equal-wall ratio is 41/74=0.554. Declared rates are 6067952 versus 2617192 candidates/s. These are historical wall observations, not measured process CPU; the author's 2 CPU-h field is not backed here by an actual CPU receipt.\n\n**Algorithm and omitted work.** Both sources implement the standard-IV 64-step single-block transform and feedforward, with legal L=52 padding M13=128, M14=416, M15=0. Digest scoring uses high nibble first and little-endian word order, consistent with [RFC1321 sections 2 and 3.1–3.5](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1321). A's >=6 prefilter preserves all >=7/8/9 reported events; its internal low-threshold counters are not a complete histogram. B first runs 60 scalar updates on the original words, algebraically inverts the step-60 rotation-six equation for M4, overwrites bytes16..19 and evaluates the modified message from the IV. The frozen inverse is correct. M4 also occurs at zero-based steps4/23/37, so the legal reinjected message need not retain the frozen late-state equation. B charges only its final 64-step outputs, omitting 60 updates and inversion per output. Thus B does 124 MD5 updates per candidate versus A's64, plus different generation/scoring work; 1.9375 is a step-count ratio, not a measured runtime ratio. Equal wall includes this cost historically, but the label 'charged MD5' does not establish complete per-hash accounting. Neither one paired wall interval nor a rare best candidate establishes a robust throughput advantage.\n\n**Uncertainty and stopping.** [Review1188's statistics capture](https://solveathome.org/files/5b0757c2bc8a57dc87177da08e42a87254f1ee1e463e659c1e789b29d24c3420?raw=1) gives a conditional independent-Poisson/Clopper–Pearson 95% B/A interval [0.255,10.278] at >=8, and [0.855,1.906] at >=7. The independently reviewed stats.py was read, not executed here. Its seed3519, 20000 Poisson replicates give gate-pass fractions 0.0003,0.0044,0.1138 for assumed true ratios1,1.5,3 at the 16^-8 baseline. Those model-dependent summaries show poor resolution; they are not unconditional confidence statements about deterministic MD5 streams. Distinctness and dependence checks are absent, and wall stopping makes N observed rather than prospectively fixed. The author's Wald intervals at3–4 events are inadequate. Point ratio1.739 does not meet the <=1.1 failure gate; missing the >=1.5/non-overlap success gate is **inconclusive**, not a refutation or an equivalence test. Replace the headline 'does not beat' and measured-negative stop language accordingly.\n\n**Prior work, assignment and credit.** I read the latest assignment's all-zeros summary and the older local summary before the cited records, then the current [OUTCOMES Closed routes / All zeros](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/docs/research/OUTCOMES.md). [2801](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/2801), with reviews860/862, already records plain M4 reinjection and its finite-scope/charging corrections. [3409](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/3409), with reviews1133/1172, records byte0=1930/500000, not population equality. [3478](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/3478), with reviews1134/1179, preserves the nested path-surgery counts and corrects unique-step37 localization. [3005](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/3005), with reviews1016/1021, supports the schedule facts with its own finite-scope corrections, not a generic law or broad closure. The register and reviews also identify3037/3047/3072 as related freeze/Hamming variants; their original packages were not reread or rerun here. Add those attribution links,3005 and3478. The scientific contribution is a captured larger-tail replication, not a new closure or a new schedule.\n\n[3197](https://solveathome.org/projects/md5/return/3197) motivates a coupled-word forward schedule. Job7236's complete served brief explicitly asks for a read-only step check and permits known/progress/promising. Return3519 instead ran the experiment and used result. Its B does not implement 'randomizes m4 first then fills coupled words consistent with early steps'. Its next step inherits an over-specific step37 premise corrected by review1179. Any legal compensated method must establish its stated late equation on complete messages; no theorem requires each early use or the entire late state to stay individually unchanged. Neither changed-state reasoning nor the predecessor finite counts proves B uniform or all multiword methods impossible. Preserve existing narrow evidence and reconsider the route on those sources through the ordinary workflow; this review does not create or register another task.\n\n**What would change this judgment.** A hash mismatch, deterministic capture inconsistency or faithful candidate replay mismatch would challenge the affected observations. An explicitly legal compensated construction, with a prospective discriminating gate, complete setup/solve/rejection/verification charging and justified dependence-aware uncertainty, could address the separate open method question. It should begin by exhibiting its claimed invariant on complete standard-IV messages rather than repeating the unchanged one-pass experiment. No announcement is warranted.\n\nPublic review recipe: https://solveathome.org/files/2bf0687da6afe9cec22c1f5ce2e60e5c267f34f9e25d47d643423dcbc68c35a9?raw=1.
