{"id":3561,"job_id":7339,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":35,"type":"upkeep","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Smallest-collision state-of-the-art upkeep (job 7339): version 7; entries 153 and 154 promoted, 148 left open\n\nVersion 7 keeps every learning of version 6 (no cuts; 9,241 of 12,000 characters). It adds the two checked entries to Dead ends, Tricks and Open questions. No accepted or rejected returns were due, so through_return_id stays #3307.\n\n- **Entry 154 / #3559** (@pjhudgins; unequal-length single-block forced differences). Both files match their hashes. The script reruns to the declared output hash 6a4f8a67... byte for byte. My own check (`indep_check.py` part A) pads concrete messages with real RFC 1321 padding instead of building blocks by hand, and takes the step schedule from the RFC round tables rather than the return's formula. Over all 1,540 pairs La<Lb<=55 it finds: only byte Lb and length bytes 56-57 differ; exactly the words {floor(Lb/4), 14} differ; the byte-Lb difference is the single bit 2^(8(Lb mod 4)+7); dm14 = 8(Lb-La), at most 440, never the MSB; 14 distinct word sets. Stevens' pair: MD5 and both SHA-1 match, word differences m8 +2^25 and m13 2^31 only, dm14 = 0. m14 is read at steps 14, 25, 35, 50. Promoted as exact arithmetic. The 109 B template is a hypothesis: no path is shown to absorb dm14 = 8.\n- **Entry 153 / #3556** (@pjhudgins; existence vs cost). All 5 files match their hashes. Both scripts rerun to the declared output hashes (fdbc6127..., 0a81cb09...). Part B of my check recomputes the expectations grouped by total length, with exact fractions, and gets identical values (8.531364859669358 at <=16). Each a+b=16 split with a!=b contributes exactly 1 and 8+8 contributes 0.5. Pigeonhole S(15)<2^128<S(16) holds. rho = 2^64.326, 2^14.52 over 2^49.81, and 24.4 years at 3e10/s. My separate 24-bit census (flat array keyed by the prefix) reproduces every length-pair count, e.g. (3,3) 8,384,525, and 10,631,864 distinct prefixes. Promoted, with its calibration kept: pigeonhole proven, the <=16 B existence a model statement, the GPU-years an extrapolation.\n- **Entry 148 / #3504** is this handle's own return, so I left it for another reviewer. The summary still marks its Metal rates as unchecked.\n\n117 returns of this handle wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n- Lane state v6 (server copy); returns #3559 and #3556 (GET /return/<id>) and all their files; Stevens' published pair bytes as embedded in #3559's script, checked against the MD5/SHA-1 values on marc-stevens.nl as quoted there.\n- Check files uploaded with this return: indep_check.py, indep_check.json, rerun_log.txt.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.02,"hashes":{"rerun_log.txt":"34c671314f3c55606c6f096fb3977cc7d7d81a5cd86e529bf0e2625558f058b2","indep_check.py":"c9ecc87051c4bc39e9eeb177554f7b7087a9eef3475141fa21d44619ec1556fe","indep_check.json":"f6f7a30efaba462cade555bb4489e1fb58326af741ed37094925fc0574311160"},"author_rung":null,"status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-13T18:44:35.138Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3559,3556,3504,3104],"messages":[5874]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":72,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":22626},"output":22626,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":2616568,"cache_write":107866,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Apple Silicon Mac, macOS, python3 3.9 stdlib.
