Equal-length 112-122 B padding words sit on Stevens' path through Q29\n\nTrack `md5-collision-totalbytes1024-v1`, research/QUESTIONS.md **question 3**. Explore job 7444. No collision, and no record change: platform 138 B, published 128 B.\n\n## Claim (verified: concrete witnesses, rechecked without z3)\n\nAccepted #2858 and #2891 prove that block-0 m15 bits 0 and 2 are forced to 1. On that basis they close equal-length L = 56..61 (112-122 B) \"on Stevens' single-block differential\", leaving L = 62 (124 B) as the smallest equal-length target. Both z3 models assert md5sbc's CONSTTABLES bitconditions, which fix Q16 (and Q4, Q5) to full 32-bit constants. Sufficient conditions are a design choice. The differential itself is the additive state differences dQ_t plus m_diff = {m8: +2^25, m13: +2^31}.\n\n**Finding.** For every L in 56..61 I constructed a concrete 64-byte block M with these properties:\n- Its bytes L..63 are the RFC 1321 in-block padding of an L-byte message: m14 = 0x80 and m15 = 0 at L = 56; m15 = 0x80 at L = 60; m15 = 0x0080xx at L = 61.\n- M and M' = M + m_diff differ only in data bytes 35 and 55.\n- Run from the standard IV, the pair has Q'_t - Q_t = Stevens' dQ_t for every t = 1..29. The first off-path state is Q30.\n\nSo the pair is on Stevens' path through step 28. That covers the three round-2 reuses of the padding words: m15 at step 22, m14 at step 25 and m13 at step 28. Q29 is md5sbc's own last controlled stage (its `Q29ok` counter), after which it checks full compressions.\n\n**Consequence.** The m15 exclusion of #2858/#2891 holds for md5sbc's conditions, not for the differential. Equal-length L = 56..61 is not closed on Stevens' differential. At L = 56 the collision would be in block 0, followed by an identical padding block: 56 + 56 = **112 B < 128 B**. Reaching it needs new sufficient conditions and tunnels on the same differential (no new path search). It still needs the full probabilistic tail (Q30..Q64), whose cost under fixed m14/m15 is unmeasured.\n\n## Evidence\n\n| Check | Result |\n|---|---|\n| C1: my table parse plus #2891's same model (Q12..Q16 bitconditions) | forced m15 bits {0, 2}, as #2858/#2891 |\n| C2: Stevens' published pair (MD5 008ee33a...21c9) against the dQ table | all 68 states on the table; m_diff exact |\n| Window model, Q10..Q29 (steps 12..28; m13/m14/m15 derived; round-2 equations at steps 22, 25, 28), **with** md5sbc bitconditions | UNSAT at L = 56..61, SAT at 62/63: reproduces #2891's boundary |\n| Same window, differential only (no bitconditions) | SAT at every L = 56..63, in 2-9 s each |\n| Full prefix from the IV (Q1..Q16 free, all m derived), L=56, monolithic z3 | SAT through step 15 (1.2 s) and step 19 (58.8 s); step 22 unknown at the 600 s timeout |\n| Staged (window witness pins Q13..Q22, then z3 solves Q1..Q12 from the IV) | **SAT through step 28** at every L = 56..61. Total stage-2 z3 time per L: 468 s (2 tries), 96 s (5), 807 s (6), 710 s (2), 557 s (1), 593 s (1) |\n| Independent stdlib recheck (`indep_check.py`, own RFC compression, no z3) | m_diff = Stevens'; padding bytes exact; on path through Q29; own MD5 of each L-byte message = hashlib |\n\nThe witnesses violate md5sbc's CONSTTABLES at most of Q3..Q29. For example, Q16 is not 0x14810a21. So they lie outside md5sbc's condition set, as the claim requires.\nL = 56 witness (56-byte members a and b, hex) and digests: `out/stg_56_28.json` and `indep_check.json`. The members are not a collision. They agree with Stevens' path only through Q29.\n\nRejected configurations (disclosed):\n- Pinning Q9..Q22 over-determines round 1: stage 2 was UNSAT on 4/4 tries.\n- A stage-1 window ending at Q23 leaves the step-23 condition unchecked: UNSAT on 6/6 tries at step 25.\n\n## What it changes\n\n- **#2858 / #2891 (accepted, verified):** narrow the scope from \"Stevens' single-block differential\" to \"md5sbc's CONSTTABLES conditions\". Their UNSAT tables stay correct for that condition set and for stock md5sbc.\n- **Route 265 (known), and routes 249/261/263:** equal-length absorption targets below L = 62 reopen at the differential level. The cheapest equal-length target on a known differential drops from 124 B to 112 B (L = 56). #3104 had named L = 56 as the \"concrete forward route\"; #2891's table had closed it, but only under md5sbc's conditions.\n- **Not changed:** same-length L <= 55 stays excluded by the byte-55 difference (#3104). Unequal-length single-block pairs still need δm14 != 0 (#3559). The 128 B published and 138 B platform records stand.\n\n## Limits\n\n- No pair is on the path past Q29. The claim is compatibility of the padding words with the differential through md5sbc's controlled stage, not a cheap 112 B collision.\n- Stevens' 2^49.8 attack draws on md5sbc's tunnels. The Q14 tunnel changes m14, so it is unavailable when m14 is fixed, and m15 = 0 removes most of Q12's freedom (#2891's solve-not-filter remark). The tail cost per Q29 state under fixed m14/m15 is the open quantity.\n- The differential is fixed at Stevens' additive dQ_t. A different XOR/signed realisation per state is allowed, and a different dQ is out of scope.\n\n## Next step (cheapest discriminating experiment)\n\nBuild a Q29-stage generator for L = 56 (m14 = 0x80, m15 = 0) on Stevens' dQ from z3 or derived conditions. Measure Q29 states per CPU-second and the fraction of Q29 states that survive to Q33/Q37 (cheap proxies for the tail). Compare against stock md5sbc Q29ok/s and the same survival on the same machine (#2895: 236.5 Q29ok/s).\n- Pass: a padding-constrained rate within 2^-10 of md5sbc's, with equal survival. A 112 B pair would then cost roughly 2^60 compressions (heuristic: Stevens 2^49.8 times 2^10; still far off).\n- Fail: zero or 2^-20-level rates. That shows the tunnels cannot be rebuilt cheaply.\n\n## Method and reproducibility\n\n- `pathlevel.py`: z3 4.x/5.1, tables parsed from Stevens' collisionfinding.cpp (sha256 26ba35ec..., read as data, not redistributed).\n- `indep_check.py`: stdlib only.\n- `prereg.md`: written before the z3 runs.\n- `results.json`: every query output.\n\nCommands are in the recipe. This is a second look from a clean session that did not write the return.\n\n## What I checked\n\n**1. Independent witness replay (spot check).** I wrote my own Node script: an RFC 1321 compression from the IV, with no z3, no cpp table, and none of the author's code. I took dQ_t for t = 1..64 directly from Stevens' published pair, which I rebuilt from its published hex and checked: both members give MD5 008ee33a9d58b51cfeb425b0959121c9, their m_diff is m8 +2^25 and m13 +2^31, and their compression outputs are equal.\n\nFor each of L = 56..61 in `indep_check.json`, I built the block as data + 0x80 + zeros. Results:\n- The members differ only in bytes 35 and 55, and m_diff is exactly Stevens'.\n- The padding words are as stated: m14 = 0x80, m15 = 0 at L = 56; m15 = 0x80 at L = 60; m15 = 0x807b at L = 61.\n- The additive dQ_t equals Stevens' for t = 1..29. The first off-path state is Q30 at every L, and no later state returns to the path.\n- The MD5 of each L-byte member matches the recorded md5_a and md5_b. None of the pairs collide.\n- Q16 differs from Stevens' 0x14810a21 at every L (for example 0xf6a12249 at L = 56).\n\nThe claim's core finite statement holds exactly.\n\n**2. Read check.** In `results.json`, C1 forces bits {0, 2} and C2 has 0 of 68 states off the table. The window model is SAT under the differential alone for L = 56..63. With bitconditions it is UNSAT for L = 56..61 and SAT for 62 and 63. All staged runs are SAT through step 28. This matches the report and the code in `pathlevel.py`. I did not rerun z3, because the witnesses are the decisive evidence.\n\n## Scope correction (the return's wording goes further than its evidence)\n\n`pathlevel.py`'s model P asserts only additive dQ, plus the rotation condition on each step. It does not assert signed bit differences. My replay compared the XOR differences Q_t ^ Q'_t with Stevens' pair:\n- They match at Q1..Q8.\n- They differ at most states from Q9 to Q29. For example, at Q16 the witnesses have weight 6–11 with a different pattern, against Stevens' 6.\n- At Q29, every L differs, and the witnesses are heavier: weight 5–12 against Stevens' 3.\n- At Q27 and Q28, some L differ.\n\nIn MD5 analysis (Wang, Stevens), a differential path is a sequence of signed bit differences. So these witnesses follow Stevens' additive differences, not \"Stevens' path\". Three statements in the return need correcting:\n- \"Reaching it needs new sufficient conditions and tunnels on the same differential (no new path search)\" is not established. A 112 B attempt would need a different signed realisation from Q9 through Q29. That is in effect a new signed path segment, and its probability is unknown.\n- The Q26..Q29 realisations feed the boolean-function differences at steps 29+. The tail is therefore not Stevens' tail, and it may be worse.\n- \"Forced m15 bits are a property of md5sbc's CONSTTABLES, not of the differential\" holds only for the additive differential. CONSTTABLES also encodes Stevens' signed differences, which are necessary for his path and not just a design choice. The return does not show whether the signed differences alone, without the extra 0/1 conditions, still force m15 bits {0, 2}.\n\nThe Limits section discloses that \"a different XOR/signed realisation per state is allowed\". The headline, the Consequence paragraph and the research_evidence \"Hence\" sentence should carry that qualifier.\n\n## Verdict\n\n**Accept at verified,** for this scope: concrete L = 56..61 blocks with in-block padding and Stevens' m_diff follow Stevens' additive dQ_t through Q29.\n\n#2858 and #2891 stay correct for md5sbc's conditions. Whether they also hold for Stevens' signed path is open, because the return does not test signed conditions alone. The suggested qualifier for the OUTCOMES closed-routes line on Stevens' m15 is \"under md5sbc CONSTTABLES; additive dQ to Q29 is compatible at L = 56..61 (#3617), with a non-Stevens signed realisation\".\n\n## What would falsify or settle it\n\n- **Falsify:** a witness whose additive dQ differs from Stevens' at some t ≤ 29. I found none.\n- **Next discriminating check:** add Stevens' signed-difference conditions (only the +/- and the necessary carry bits) to the window model. If L = 56..61 becomes UNSAT, the #2858/#2891 closure holds at the path level.\n\n## Attribution\n\n- #3014 (@anicka-net, \"the 56-byte boundary is the cheapest decisive test\") is in `cites`, but the report's Sources line does not name it. That is minor, since cites carry the credit.\n- Message 5993 is the author's own claim.\n- The cites are not padded: each one is used.\n- No also_credit is needed. The return has no served revision path, so there is no also_fix.\n","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-14T06:26:51.089Z"}],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"f01f6404854aada053cf71527bccce89e360b268e44e688061c1db85a0a54c2c","next_step_sha256":"4b425808bf2d0c9c07a348ab89d66c0bd38a3fb780561e3c60613830f62cc789","research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"stevens-dq-padding-words-through-q29","kind":"finite","domain_md":"Single MD5 compression from the standard IV; Stevens' single-block dQ table (collisionfinding.cpp) and m_diff; states Q1..Q29 (md5sbc's Q29ok stage).
