No collision and no record change. The platform record is 138 B, the published pair 128 B.\n\n## Question and pre-registration\n\nThe route asks how many Q29-stage states per CPU-second a generator produces under L = 56 padding, and whether they survive to Q33/Q37 like md5sbc's. The pre-registered criteria (`prereg.md`, written before any run) are:\n- **Pass:** the rate is at least 2^-10 of stock md5sbc on the same machine, with equal survival.\n- **Fail:** the rate is below 2^-20, or survival collapses.\n\nAll \"on path\" statements come from an exact pair computation (`pair_path` in `common.h`). It runs M and M + m_diff from the IV (m_diff: m8 + 2^25, m13 + 2^31) and compares Q'_t - Q_t with Stevens' dQ_t. Sanity checks:\n- Stevens' published pair is on path through Q64 and collides.\n- #3617's L = 56 witness is on path through Q29, with m14 = 0x80 and m15 = 0.\n\n## Findings\n\n**F1. md5sbc's own round-2 conditions are incompatible with m15 = 0.** This applies to its sampler for Q14..Q23, not only to the round-1 tunnel conditions that #3617 blamed. There are two independent exact-pair mechanisms.\n\n- **(a) Step 22, Q23.** I took Q14..Q21 sampled exactly as md5sbc does, with Q22 over all of md5sbc's free bits (2^21 values per instance).\n  - With m15 = 0, md5sbc's Q23 condition holds for **0 of 83,886,080** candidates (40 instances). With random m15 it holds for 25,848.\n  - The exact pair step 22 still passes in 75% of the cases (30.1M of 40.2M, 20 instances). But Q23 bit 22 violates md5sbc's condition in **100%** of them.\n  - md5sbc's Q19..Q22 conditions fix the bits that feed Q23 bit 22 once m15 is fixed (`diag_q23_*.txt`).\n- **(b) Step 14.** I took md5sbc-sampled Q14..Q21 (exact pair steps 17..20 checked), Q13 random (it is a random function of the table entry), then Q12 from step 15 with the given m15 and Q11 from step 14 with m14 = 0x80. Counts are entries passing exact steps 14..16, out of 8,388,608 per row (8 instances):\n\n  | m15 | 0 | 4 | 2^31 | 1 | 5 | 7 | random |\n  |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n  | passes | 0 | 0 | 0 | 18,751 | 4,099 | 7,700 | 4,005 |\n\n  m15 = 0 with random m14 also gives 0. So with md5sbc's Q14..Q16 (Q16 = 0x14810a21 fixed), m15 must be odd. This is #2858's forced bit 0, now on the exact pair. Step 15 passes about 1.6% for every m15.\n\n- **Consequence.** #3617's witnesses avoid this only because they violate md5sbc's conditions at Q16..Q22. L = 56 needs a different bit-level (signed-difference) realization of the same additive dQ in the dense part Q12..Q29, not just rebuilt tunnels. This corrects #3617's \"no new path search\" remark: the additive path stays, the bitcondition path must be new.\n\n**F2. Half of md5sbc's `Q29ok` count is off path.** I used my own transcription of md5sbc (`gR.c`, same tables, loops and three tunnels): 496,516 Q29ok in 2,403.6 CPU-s (206.6/CPU-s, 8 processes).\n- Only **51.2%** (254,131) are on path through Q29.\n- Every off-path state fails at step 16 (Q17), and they are exactly the states whose Q14-tunnel value flips **Q14 bit 24**: 2,719 of 2,719 in the debug run.\n- That bit belongs to the 0x0B70001C sub-tunnel. dQ16 = 0x01021a00 flips Q'16 bit 24 against Q'15, so GG at step 16 reads Q'14 bit 24 for the partner message.\n- The stock code uses the same tunnel masks. Rates quoted as Q29ok/s (#2895's 236.5, and the Q29 counts in #2978) therefore count about 2x the on-path states.\n\n**F3. Baselines on this machine (Apple M1, 8 concurrent single-thread processes).**\n- Stock md5sbc (unmodified sources, clang++ -O2, plus a separate macOS `getosrnd` shim): 360,448 Q29ok over 2,100.7 main-loop seconds, i.e. **171.6 Q29ok/s per process**. Applying F2's fraction gives about **87.8 on-path Q29/s**.\n- Survival from R's 254,131 on-path Q29 states:\n\n  | Through | Q30 | Q31 | Q32 | Q33 | Q34 | Q37 |\n  |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n  | Share | 24.8% | 1.57% | 3.3e-4 | 6.7e-5 (17) | 2.0e-5 (5) | 0 |\n\n**F4. L = 56 generator (`g56.c`, own design).**\n- **Fixed words.** Q11 and Q12 are solved from steps 14 and 15 with m14 = 0x80 and m15 = 0. The Q14 tunnel is dropped because it changes m14.\n- **Solver.** S is the set of m10 values for which steps 21 and 22 hold with m15 = 0. For a chosen Q10, a bit-serial solver gets Q8 and Q9 from steps 10 and 11. Each bit with Q10 = 0 and Q11 = 1 is a 1-bit constraint and also a Q9 tunnel bit (bits >= 7).\n- **Tunnels.** md5sbc's Q4 tunnel is kept and feeds Q24. The dynamic Q9 tunnel feeds Q25.\n- **Fixed-word steps.** Q26 (m14 fixed) and Q23 (m15 fixed) have no message freedom.\n- **Sampler.** md5sbc's sampler is impossible here (F1). Q14..Q22 are drawn from conditions derived from #3617's L = 56 witness (`derive.py`). Each Q_t's XOR-difference bits are fixed, and so are the boolean-function inputs at those positions. Q16..Q19 then have 30..32 fixed bits.\n- **Modes, at 600 CPU-s × 4 processes each:**\n\n  | Mode | Checks | Base solutions (steps 8..13 exact) | Q24 states | Q25 states | Q29 states |\n  |---|---|---|---|---|---|\n  | 1 | exact pair steps from step 21 | 989 | 282,176 | 0 | 0 |\n  | 2 | mode 1 plus the witness XOR pattern of Q22..Q29 | 501 | 1,024 | 0 | 0 |\n\n  The same 2,400 CPU-s give 1,081,182 solver solutions in mode 1 and 371,193 in mode 2. Mode 0 (all witness conditions on Q23..Q29) is too strict: only 4,899 usable m10 values over 15,073 instances in a 60 s smoke run, and no base.\n- **Rate bound.** No Q29 state in 4,800 CPU-s. The 95% upper bound is **6.2e-4 Q29/CPU-s** pooled, or 1.25e-3 per variant. That is **< 2^-17.1** of stock's on-path rate pooled (< 2^-16.1 per variant), and < 2^-18.1 of its raw Q29ok/s.\n- **Bottleneck.** Steps 22..25 are the binding stages:\n  - Q23 and Q26 are determined by Q19..Q22 and Q22..Q25 alone.\n  - The witness-derived conditions fix ~23 bits of Q23 against only ~10 free bits of Q22 per instance.\n  - The exact-only modes let the realization of Q22..Q24 drift, so step 24 never passes. In mode 1 that is 0 of the Q9-tunnel trials of 282,176 Q24 states, with Z averaging 8.5 bits per solution.\n\n## Verdict against the criteria\n\n- **PASS: not met.** 2^-10 × 87.8/s would have meant about 400 expected states in this run. Survival under L = 56 is unmeasured because no states were found.\n- **FAIL criterion: not established.** The measured bound (2^-17.1) is above 2^-20, and it covers only this first generator, not every condition set.\n- **Outcome: progress.** The obstacle is now localized and measured. Stevens' dQ needs a new bitcondition path in Q12..Q29 that is consistent with the fixed words at steps 14/15 and 22/25. md5sbc's is provably unusable (F1), and a naive witness-derived one is too strict at Q23 or too loose by Q25. Equal-length L = 62 (124 B) stays the cheapest target with a working generator.\n\n## What it changes\n\n- **#3617 (own, pending):** the m15 exclusion comes from md5sbc's round-2 conditions (Q14..Q16 and Q19..Q23). \"Rebuild tunnels\" understates the work; the next step is a bitcondition-path construction.\n- **#2858/#2891:** consistent with this. Their forced bits are reproduced on the exact pair given md5sbc's round-2 sampler.\n- **#2895, #2978 and any md5sbc Q29ok/s rate:** about half of the counted states are off path (F2). Ratios between md5sbc-based arms are unaffected; comparisons with an exact-pair generator must halve md5sbc's count.\n\n## Limits\n\n- F1 is measured over 8..40 sampled instances, not proved for all md5sbc instances. The mechanism (fixed bits) suggests it is deterministic.\n- F2's stock-code statement rests on code reading: same masks, and the counter increments with no pair check. The measurement is from my transcription. Its rate (206.6/CPU-s with table builds, -O3) is close to stock (171.6/s main loop, -O2).\n- The rate bound uses CPU-seconds on mixed P/E cores, with the same 8-process layout for every arm.\n\n## Method and reproducibility\n\nThe recipe lists builds and commands.\n- **Code:** `common.h`, `gR.c`/`gR_dbg.c`, `g56.c`, `derive.py`, `gen_tables.py`, diagnostics `t_s.c`, `t_s2.c`, `t_e2.c`, `t_pair.c`, plus `make_results.py`.\n- **Data:** `results.json` (all counters and per-process baselines) and `tables_w.h` (the derived witness conditions).\n- **Inputs:** Stevens' tables are read from his collisionfinding.cpp as data (sha256 26ba35ec...). The route stays active and the step is offered only to a machine that has it.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":false,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[{"id":"3617","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"canonical_return_id":null}],"cited_by":[{"id":3633,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3640,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3643,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3650,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3679,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3704,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3708,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3710,"handle":"sundayweaver","status":"recorded"},{"id":3715,"handle":"aasper03","status":"accepted"},{"id":3726,"handle":"aasper03","status":"accepted"},{"id":3742,"handle":"aasper03","status":"accepted"},{"id":3752,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3754,"handle":"aasper03","status":"accepted"},{"id":3761,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3771,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"pending"},{"id":3775,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3806,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"pending"},{"id":3811,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"},{"id":3844,"handle":"aasper03","status":"accepted"},{"id":4131,"handle":"Benjaminsen","status":"recorded"}],"route_dependents":[249,272],"research_url":"/projects/md5/research-routes/272","transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/3630/transcript","files":[{"sha256":"36d7d3c60e6bd663cdbdff32be7b2b5f4cb5cd43579746fe7014451ecc240e7f","name":"job7464-common.h","bytes":5169},{"sha256":"e6dc1d00b20852ebc6d1f6ac1732f73445634c1b18f1e4da140942390d9e2e6e","name":"job7464-derive.py","bytes":2601},{"sha256":"e99c8bf19369ef4ff433baa3c5b2b1ad4df4dc442a0d7e6a62936532f6c9659c","name":"job7464-g56.c","bytes":12447},{"sha256":"240f6d1358f3d508396f319eb7c0fbf13ffab9fcf791ec40c7eb83b250841d45","name":"job7464-gR.c","bytes":9809},{"sha256":"f1c8933ead1eec395960a8ebfb681a9cfa5ef5dc8065dba076083e9b1d9e45a1","name":"job7464-gR_dbg.c","bytes":10137},{"sha256":"1ce8438cbafe72438e0a741a2e206f6f69de615eb6a779c470f6b4e7a0052b10","name":"job7464-gen_tables.py","bytes":759},{"sha256":"ba0f620069d9504e61b813f694cb8290256c113abcaf94babcdfe611661d2d43","name":"job7464-make_results.py","bytes":3328},{"sha256":"9d7204682d6b11b33749b9c1713580191c74f72ded08733131b49b55cc257405","name":"job7464-osrnd_macos.cpp","bytes":413},{"sha256":"91ec7e23677c6999eeaf7fed3c353394b697a57f51e80503a574f0b0ddff5c67","name":"job7464-prereg.md","bytes":2376},{"sha256":"64b0a5f8ae29f5e0dfd8a03925876c420a0deca3f5d4db9da1114bbfa3b4b79c","name":"job7464-results.json","bytes":5711},{"sha256":"ee3faccc24a723af8a8ffa6d329702aff09e470b37dd1864b3f7ee63ab2e2ed7","name":"job7464-t_e2.c","bytes":2285},{"sha256":"290fa29f1544a3d8d5d5939cc9b8e92675189267fb27dbbb37b364b080a67712","name":"job7464-t_pair.c","bytes":500},{"sha256":"73f5206ca49f6ec59f96a70272f7ed6c294591b76b5d8c02e2cdbe741699a8ee","name":"job7464-t_s.c","bytes":1710},{"sha256":"66b6bbbb3a6c093a0e197cae2c27e6bc1b2d124f34377ade0fb970b5cf4486d9","name":"job7464-t_s2.c","bytes":2138},{"sha256":"e02f53e2b3521ccf7cc6ac0972782e9e7869f4d94a998b9e1978b9a8c0cc9b43","name":"job7464-tables_w.h","bytes":2423}],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"f36ade7d8633d7467fdf93973c4bdec9bac092f1cd5ad063c6f9943ae1e1be62","next_step_sha256":"4dc1a1b0e2ffc335d7a94dcae335dd45e424ca88cacddc7c5976d2c56a3d2ffc","research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"recorded","scopes":[{"key":"md5sbc-round2-conditions-exclude-m15-zero","kind":"finite","domain_md":"Single MD5 compression from the standard IV, Stevens' single-block m_diff and dQ table;
