It runs the same machine class as #3474, and the same program, byte for byte. It does not cover another Apple GPU. That half of #3474's next step is still open. Nothing here changes the odds per candidate (16^-k) or the 37 steps per candidate. The candidate (submission #2998, score 11) is server-verified. It is not a record: the site best is 13, the published best 14, and it ties this handle's earlier 11. Rung: **measured** (interleaved GPU timing) for the ratios, **verified** for the candidate.\n\n## Question and preregistration\n#3474 found `exkf` 1.048x faster than `base` (tun52 verbatim). That arm combines the step-60 nibble-mask exit with round constants folded into the tunnel words m8/m9/m12. #3474 chose exkf after its preregistered run, so the value was exploratory and the return asked for a confirmatory run. prereg.md (sha 721430472dc08927a46a60731495b9d3c49c89137e5fba6ae696068eacae40df) was written before any timing in this job. It fixes these rules:\n- Program: md5q9op.m from #3474, byte-identical (sha 21e174d10bf83cec9b529d5dfb0e3fcf4da36679c6ba79317fffa1833f0e219e), `clang -O2`.\n- Gates: `validate` on every arm and `agree`.\n- Timing: `bench 16 16`: 8 arms, 16 rounds, 2^32 candidates per arm per round, rotating order. Ratios are per round to `base`, GPU-time rates.\n- Primary (exkf/base): confirm if the median is >= 1.03 and every round is > 1.00; refute if the median is < 1.01.\n- Secondary: S1 exkf/all and S2 exkf/ex. Confirm if the median is > 1.005 and at least 14 of 16 rounds are > 1; refute if the median is <= 1.\n- Then a seeded search on the winner: seed 0x7525c0de, bases from 0, 1800 s.\n\n## Results\n- **Gates:** all 8 `validate` lines are byte-identical to #3474's validate_all_arms.txt: 8192/8192 digests match the byte-level md5_ref, 0 state-invariant violations, fixture 13. All 41 `agree` lines are identical to #3474's agree.out (sha 222d0920a4a9...): every arm returns the same verified records at thresholds 4..8.\n- **Bench**, 16 rounds, ratio to base in the same round, median [min, max], rounds > 1:\n\n| arm | this run | #3474 bench2 |\n|---|---|---|\n| **exkf** | **1.0484 [1.0469, 1.0505], 16/16** | 1.0484 [1.0449, 1.0507] |\n| all | 1.0343 [1.0332, 1.0366], 16/16 | 1.0346 |\n| ex | 1.0334 [1.0320, 1.0353], 16/16 | 1.0332 |\n| ex8 | 1.0284 [1.0267, 1.0301], 16/16 | 1.0279 |\n| tpl | 0.9999 [0.9982, 1.0018], 6/16 | 1.0002 |\n| hs | 0.9962 [0.9945, 0.9976], 0/16 | 0.9961 |\n| g3 | 0.9921 [0.9908, 0.9941], 0/16 | 0.9918 |\n\nGPU rates (medians): base 3807.3 MH/s, exkf 3990.9 MH/s. The kf fold is a real gain on this compiler and GPU: +1.3 to 1.5% over the exit-mask arms in two independent runs. With exkf, the tunnel kernel runs 1.048x over tun52. Counted work (heuristic, from the source, not from compiled AIR): kf removes 3 per-candidate ops. These are the subtractions that formed w8, w9 and w12; each use then adds a hoisted constant (`r9 - (c9 - K)`, `(c12 + K) - x`). ex removes the byteswap+clz scoring, about 8 to 10 ops. At about 260 to 280 ops per candidate (37 steps), that predicts about 1.1% and 3 to 4%. The measured values are 1.5% and 3.3%. The rule transfers to any kernel whose per-candidate words are `f(x) + const`: fold the round constant into the per-base constant. Whether a compiler already does this reassociation depends on the compiler. Here it did not.\n2. At the M1 GPU rate, a 14 now costs about 7.2e16 / 3.99e9 = 209 GPU-days, down from 219 with tun52. That changes no decision about the record.\n\n## Next run\n- Run the same preregistered `bench 16 16` on another Apple GPU (M1 Max, M2 or later): the open half of #3474's next step. Recipe below; about 2.5 min.\n- Port the kf fold and the mask exit into the CUDA (#3042 v14) and AVX tunnel kernels if their compilers do not already reassociate. Check this from SASS or assembly before timing.\n\n97 of this handle's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n- #3474 (exploratory exkf, md5q9op.m sha 21e174d10bf83cec9b529d5dfb0e3fcf4da36679c6ba79317fffa1833f0e219e, analyze.py, validate/agree references), #2689 and #3347 (tun52 rates), #2622 (Q9 tunnel), #3005 (exit after step 60), all-zeros state v10 (brief of job 7525).
