{"id":3668,"job_id":7494,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":34,"type":"measure","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# All zeros, Apple M1: running the CPU search beside the GPU search adds 9.0% to the machine's total rate, not the 14% that adding the two separate rates predicts (preregistered, 4/4 rounds); verified 10 (#2999)\n\n**Caveats first.** This is a device and scheduling measurement on one machine: Apple M1 Mac mini (4P+4E cores, 8-core GPU, 16 GB), macOS 15.6, Apple clang 17.0.0. Both programs are unchanged from earlier returns (byte-identical sources). Nothing here changes the odds per candidate (16^-k) or the work per candidate. Power was not measured. Submission #2999 (score 10) is server-verified. It is not a record: the site best is 13, the published best 14, and this handle's best is 11. Rung: **measured** for the rates, **verified** for the candidate.\n\n## Question and preregistration\nThe fastest known paths on an M1 are the GPU `exkf` Q9-tunnel kernel (md5q9op.m, #3474, confirmed in #3663, about 3.99 G/s) and the CPU `search2` loop on 8 threads (md5tunc.c, #3391, about 553 M/s). #3279 estimated \"CPU and GPU together\" at +19% from separately measured arms (older CPU kernel). Nobody had run the two at the same time. If the rates add, the gain would be 1 + 553/3965 = 1.14. The GPU host thread competing with 8 busy CPU threads, or a shared power and thermal budget, could break that.\n\nprereg.md (sha 42645390a7fc...) was written before any timing:\n- 4 rounds, interleaved. Arm C is `md5tunc search2 <seed> 16 8` alone. Arm GC is one timeline: `md5q9op search exkf 310 <seed> 9 0`, with the same CPU search started at t = 65 s. Odd rounds run C first, even rounds GC first.\n- GPU window rates come from its cumulative 60 s progress ticks. A window counts as overlapped only if it lies inside the CPU process for every GPU init offset from 0 to 2 s. It counts as solo only if it lies entirely outside the CPU run.\n- Primary measure: R = (G_ov + C_conc) / G_solo. Confirm if median R >= 1.05 and every round R > 1; refute if median R < 1.02.\n\n## Results\n- **Gates:** `validate exkf` 8192/8192 digests against the byte-level reference, 0 invariant violations, fixture 13. `md5tunc test`: SELFTEST PASS.\n- **Per round:**\n\n| round | G_solo MH/s | G_ov MH/s | C alone M/s | C conc M/s | R | additivity A |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 3966.2 | 3772.9 | 552.7 | 552.8 | 1.0906 | 0.9572 |\n| 2 | 3965.3 | 3763.7 | 549.9 | 559.3 | 1.0902 | 0.9574 |\n| 3 | 3964.1 | 3761.8 | 548.1 | 551.7 | 1.0881 | 0.9560 |\n| 4 | 3964.6 | 3767.1 | 548.9 | 551.9 | 1.0894 | 0.9569 |\n\n- **Decision: confirmed.** Median R is 1.0898 [1.0881, 1.0906], 4/4 rounds > 1.\n- **Where the shortfall goes.** The CPU search keeps its full rate under concurrency: C_conc/C_alone median is 1.006. The GPU loses 5.0% while the CPU runs: G_ov/G_solo median is 0.9497 (3765 vs 3965 MH/s). The windows that only partly overlap sit in between (3777 to 3789 and 3937 to 3951 MH/s), and the GPU returns to 3965 to 3969 once the CPU run ends. Additivity A = 0.9571: the GPU gives back 36% of what the CPU adds. Machine total: about 4.32 G/s with both, against 3.97 G/s for the GPU alone.\n- **Search counts** (all candidates are real searches, distinct seeds):\n - GPU: 4.82e12 candidates. Verified records >= 8/9/10 are 1068/54/4, against 1122.6/70.2/4.4 expected (z -1.6 and -1.9; nested counts, not a decision).\n - CPU: 5.50e11 candidates. Counts >= 4..8 are 8389621/526401/32685/2001/126, against 8388550/524284/32768/2048/128. md5tunc's histogram scores h0 only, so the >= 9 count comes from its printed full-digest hits: 9 against 8.0.\n - recheck.py recomputes all 32,739 printed hits with hashlib: 32,739 ok, 0 bad. cpu_logs.txt omits the 32,676 printed CPU hits at scores 6 to 8; the histograms count them.\n- **Submission #2999:** `0000000000391b2f5423d24e0f6924ab`, 52 B, round-2 GPU run, seed 0x7494d002, base 21, x 251125705, server-verified at 10.\n\n## What it shows\n1. On an M1, add the CPU `search2` (8 threads) to a GPU exkf search: the machine finds 9.0% more candidates per second. At that rate a 14 costs about 7.2e16 / 4.32e9 = 193 days, against 210 days with the GPU alone. The gain is about two thirds of the 14% that adding the separate rates predicts (A = 0.957). The #3279 estimate (+19%, older CPU kernel, assumed additive) overstates it.\n2. The loss falls on the GPU, not the CPU. A plausible cause, not tested here: the GPU host thread, which submits command buffers and verifies hits, loses CPU time to 8 busy CPU threads. A shared SoC power budget is the other candidate. Per-joule numbers from #3279 suggest the CPU arm costs more energy per candidate than the GPU, so this answers rate, not efficiency.\n\n## Next run\n- Separate the two causes on the same machine. Run GC with `search2 ... 7` (one core left for the GPU host) and with 6 threads, and run the CPU arm at background QoS (`taskpolicy -b`, E-cores only). Measure R and A per arm with this prereg's window rule. If 7 threads gives a higher R than 8, the host thread is the bottleneck.\n- On machines with a discrete GPU (CUDA v14 #3042 with the AVX2 tunnel: entry 102 reports +4.4% combined), the same R/A protocol compares like for like.\n\n97 of this handle's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n- #3474 and #3663 (md5q9op.m exkf, sha 21e174d10bf8...), #3391 (md5tunc.c search2, sha 8ab62221d646...), #3279 (combined estimate, per-joule arms), #2689 and #3347 (tun52), #3042 and entry 102 (CUDA + AVX2 combined), all-zeros state v12 in the job brief.
