{"id":3712,"job_id":7593,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":null,"type":"explore","user_id":90,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Smallest full collision: next step is S2, a path-level test of the 109 B template; stage A evidence (job 7593, explore, planning)\n\n**Caveats first.** Planning return. It offers no collision, record or bound, and it does not repeat the plan in #3710. Its new evidence is S2 stage A: eleven solver runs with a calibration gate, done in this session before this assignment was issued (their token usage is not claimed here). The result is inconclusive at the first window where the length-word difference acts: the solver timed out (result `unknown`); it did not prove anything unsatisfiable. Rung: measured for the solver runs (finite, SAT witnesses replayed independently), heuristic for the plan. About 0.55 CPU-hours were spent across the eleven runs.\n\n## 1. What is already known\nSearch record: #3710 (2026-10-14). Rechecked today for changes: the smallest-collision state document is now v12 (it folds in #3704 and earlier returns and says nothing on this template); the routes are unchanged (249 active, 253 result, 272 blocked); no new post in the lane since #6137; no route or return addresses the 109 B template beyond the arithmetic in #3559. The licence caveat on stage 1 of #3710 (no modified copies of Stevens' sources without the author's consent) is unchanged and is the person's decision, so stage 1 is not assumed here.\n\n## 2. Selected investigation: S2\n**The template, exactly (derived from #3559 and padding rules).** A 54-byte message M and a 55-byte message M'. Block words: m13 = `0x0080xxxx` for M (byte 54 is the 0x80 pad, byte 55 is 0) and m13 + 2^31 for M' (byte 54 is data 0x80, byte 55 is the pad); m14 = 432 for M and 440 for M' (the bit length), so dm14 = +8; m15 = 0 for both; dm8 = +2^25 (byte 35). So the pair differs exactly at bytes 35 and 55 plus the length word, as Stevens' pair does at 35 and 55, and totals 54 + 55 = 109 B, below route 272's 112 B. This extends #3710, which named only dm14 = +8: the fixed padding words are part of the template.\n**Question.** Is there a message pair whose per-step XOR weights of Q_t xor Q'_t for t = 9..T stay within the weights of Stevens' own published pair plus a slack s (control: same model without padding and without dm14)?\n**Model** (z3 QF_BV, script `s2_model.py`): both messages, the MD5 step function for steps 0..T, popcount caps per step. Calibration: my step trace matches `hashlib` on 200 of 200 padded single-block messages; Stevens' example pair compresses to equal values after block 1 and differs only in m8 (+2^25) and m13 (+2^31); its XOR weights for t = 9..22 are 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 4, 6, 6, 8, 20, 17, 5, 5, 8 (the connection window at 18 and 19 is heavy). Every SAT witness was replayed with the pure-Python trace.\n\n## 3. Stage A results (full table in the uploaded summary)\n\n| run | window T | slack | solver time (cap) | result |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| control | 14 | 0 | 29.6 s (150 s) | sat, replay ok |\n| control | 15 | 0 | 20.6 s (240 s) | sat, replay ok |\n| control | 16 | 0 | cap 240 s | unknown |\n| control | 17 | 0 | cap 150 s | unknown |\n| control | 20 | 0 | cap 150 s | unknown |\n| template | 14 | 0 | 150.4 s (150 s) | sat, replay ok, padding words verified |\n| template | 15 | 0 (seeds 1 and 2) | cap 240 s | unknown, unknown |\n| template | 15 | 2 | cap 240 s | unknown |\n| template | 15 | 8 | cap 240 s | unknown |\n| template | 16 | 2 | cap 240 s | unknown (uninterpretable: control at 16 is unknown) |\n\n**Reading.** The gate (control sat) holds through T = 15 only at these caps. At T = 14 the template differs from the control only in the fixed m13 bytes, because dm14 first enters at step 14 and so first affects Q15; it solved, about 5x slower than the control. At T = 15, the first window where dm14 matters, the template was not solved at slack 0 (two seeds), 2 or 8 within 240 s, while the control solved in 20.6 s (more than 11x). Slack 8 is a loose cap, so the failure is not only the weight cap. Limits: one or two seeds per cell, solver times are heavy-tailed, and a timeout proves nothing about satisfiability. I make no claim that the template is infeasible; I record that it is harder for this solver at the first step where it differs.\n\n## 4. Next step (pre-registered), to run in this session\n**S2 stage B.**\n1. Shrink the search: fix the XOR differences at t = 9..14 to the values of Stevens' pair (the template shares his differential up to step 14), then leave t = 15..T free under the caps plus slack. First check that the control still solves with this prefix fixed; if not, drop it.\n2. Portfolio: four seeds per cell, cap 30 min per run, cells T in {15, 16, 17, 18} and slack in {0, 2, 4, 8}, control at each T first.\n3. Outcomes: sat is replayed with the independent trace and its weights recorded; unsat is recorded with the cell; unknown is reported as unknown. A cell counts only if its control is sat at that T.\n4. Falsifier of \"the 109 B template is not worth a path search\": a template pair that is sat at T >= 17 with weights within caps plus 4. Evidence for closing it at path level: unsat for the template at T >= 16 at every slack up to 8 while the control is sat there.\n5. Stop: gate failure at every T >= 16, or the session budget is spent; report the cells reached.\nAn external SAT solver would likely be much faster than z3 here, but installing and running more third-party code needs the person's approval, so it is not assumed.\n\n## 5. Blockers\nSolver-time heavy tails; no external solver; stage 1 of #3710 still needs the author's consent or a clean-room build (the person's decision).\n\n## 6.
