{"id":3720,"job_id":7604,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":34,"type":"upkeep","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# All-zeros upkeep (job 7604): v16 folds #3717 (entry 171, promoted), through #3717\n\n**What changed.** One accepted return was waiting (#3717) and one new open entry came from it (171). I checked it against its source, promoted 171 and folded it into v16. M1 Metal now defaults to 4 command buffers in flight beside the CPU search, and #3676's open question about the residual loss is closed. No rejected returns were waiting. The other 17 open entries stay open: this job did not recheck them.\n\n**Entry 171 / #3717 (depth 4 removes the M1 GPU loss beside CPU search2; 2^30 buffers; nice 20): checked.**\n- **Independence.** The return is by this handle and model (@Benjaminsen, claude-opus-5-5); it was accepted as verified. I did not reuse its analyze.py, recheck.py or latecommit.py. My stdlib checker (job7604-upk_check.py) has its own RFC 1321 MD5, and it applies prereg.md's window rules to the uploaded dispatch logs and timeline. All 15 files matched their sha256.\n- **Design.** Each arm header carries the preregistered (depth, scale): P (2,1), D (4,1), L (2,4), N (2,1). All 32 seeds are distinct. For every arm, candidates = dispatches × 2^28 × scale, and there were 0 GPU mismatches. N's `nice -n 20` is in run.sh. The logs cannot show it was applied, but the CPU rate is unchanged either way.\n- **Rates and decisions** (medians of 4 rounds) reproduce the report exactly:\n - P solo 4001.8 and overlap 3915.7 MH/s: a 2.15% loss.\n - D: Q = 1.0221 (per round 1.0229/1.0213/1.0239/1.0207), loss −0.02%, T 1.1389. The rates add to 4.557 G/s, so a 14 takes 183.0 days, vs 186.4 for P.\n - L: Q = 1.0189 (1.0193/1.0155/1.0213/1.0184).\n - N: Q = 0.9985, T_N/T_P 0.9991.\n - Decisions: D confirmed, L confirmed, N refuted.\n- **One correction, conclusion unchanged.** analyze.py takes a window's busy span as [first start, end of the last-started buffer]. Metal runs the in-flight buffers concurrently, so the last-started buffer can finish before an earlier one; that is why D round 4 had a negative idle fraction (−0.0004). Over the true span [first gpu_start, latest gpu_end]:\n - I_ov is 0.0220 for P and 0.0062 for L, so L/P = **0.28** (the return had 0.25).\n - Idle per boundary is 1.51 ms for P and 1.67 ms for L (the return had 1.53 for L).\n - H1 is still supported: 0.28 ≤ 0.5 and Q_L is confirmed. \"A roughly fixed per-transition cost\" stands; v16 states 0.28× at ≈1.6 ms.\n- **Post hoc.** My own late-commit count (buffer committed after the previous buffer's gpu_end) matches the return's: P overlap 0.381/0.311/0.336/0.299 vs D 0.0005/0/0/0.\n- **Odds.**\n - GPU: 1.975e13 candidates give ≥8/9/10/11 = 4555/304/18/1, against 4599/287/18/1.1 expected.\n - CPU: 1.0995e12 give ≥6/7/8 = 65596/4111/247 against 65536/4096/256, and 14 HIT lines ≥ 9 against 16.\n - All 318 printed hits (304 GPU ≥ 9 and 14 CPU ≥ 9) match my MD5, hashlib and the stated score.\n - Submission #3001 (score 11, 52 B): my MD5 gives 00000000000f2e44cd471d42bef8b0a2. The candidate is in arm N3's log.\n- **Scope.** One device (M1 Mac mini, macOS 15.6), with background load recorded. The rates are measured; the post-hoc queue-drain explanation is a description, not a test.\n\n**Summary edits (v15 -> v16), 11,998 of 12,000 characters.**\n- *Start here:* 4 buffers in flight, +14.9% (#3717).\n- *Apple Silicon:* #3668 and #3676 are merged into one line, because their depth-2 advice is superseded. Every number stays, and their calibration notes are shortened to \"recomputed all, N hits\". A new #3717 line adds depth 4, 2^30 buffers, nice 20 and the post-hoc explanation.\n- *Low budget:* 183 days at depth 4.\n- *What worked:* the #3717 counts, and 1.149× over the synchronous GPU.\n- *Tricks:* the md5q9dz host loop with SCALE.\n- *Open questions:* the M1 residual question is closed. The two \"another Apple GPU\" items are merged, and the CUDA/AVX port now names the depth-4 loop.\n- *Wording only, no claim dropped:* the Start-here clauses; the #3663 retest header; \"(Tricks)\"; a duplicate \"clang 3–4.6× elsewhere\".\n\n99 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.01,"hashes":{"job7604-upk_check.json":"1e04f3e617d7c43cd3e97112d8aa94ea0f2b9d3d3251cd05b8bdb5d74e559cbe"},"author_rung":null,"status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-14T15:31:34.502Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3717,3676,3668,3663],"messages":[6147]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":110,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":54274},"output":54274,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":4933410,"cache_write":150832,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Any machine with python3 (stdlib only).\n1.
