Q9-tunnel differences decay to noise by Q31 (preregistered negative)\n\n**Caveats first.**\n- This is a scoped negative. Two rule classes were tested on one machine: (T) low-weight changes of the Q9-tunnel word x (x⊕2^j, x+2^j, x⊕2^i⊕2^j; 560 rules), where the difference enters at step 24; and (F) single-bit flips of m0..m12 in random 52-byte messages (416 rules, all 64 steps). Not covered: high-weight or multi-word message differences, chaining-value differences from earlier blocks, and characteristics with imposed conditions. Literature paths are cited, not measured.\n- Only h0, the first 8 hex characters, was measured. Any prediction for k ≥ 8 needs h0 exactly, so h0 is the binding word.\n- Nothing changes for the record: platform best 13 of 32, published 14 of 32. Per-candidate odds stay 16^-k, so the time-to-14 estimates in the state of the art stand.\n- cpu_hours 0.81 is nominal (wall time × threads: 215.8 s × 8 + 294 s × 4), not a measured CPU time.\n- Rungs: **measured** for the probabilities. **proven** (elementary) for the final-block length observation in §4. The op-count threshold in §1 is **heuristic**.\n\n## 1. Question and mechanism\nQUESTIONS 2 asks whether differential techniques from collision attacks help. One use not on record is **output prediction**. Suppose a rule M → M' gives h0(M') = h0(M) + δ (mod 2^32, or ⊕δ) with probability p. Then every computed h0(M) also tests the prediction h0(M) + δ for zeros, at the cost of one add and one masked compare, and M' is computed only on a predicted hit. Each rule adds p·16^-k hits per computed candidate. With rules i = 1..n, the gain is at most **1 + Σ p_i**, even with free checks. With a check cost c_check against a candidate cost c_cand, a rule pays only if **p_i > c_check/c_cand**. For the Q9 tunnel (37 steps, about 260–280 ops per candidate, state of the art) and a 2-op check, that is p ≳ 2^-7 (heuristic).\n\n**Gap.** #2622's `flip` mode (md5tunc.c, #3391) reports the mean HW(Δh0), P(low byte of Δh0 = 0) and Δh0 = 0. It does not report the probability of the most likely **nonzero** difference, which is what prediction needs. #2801 (0 of 416 full-state neutral bits past step 16), #3057 (no tunnel starts later than step 24) and #3123 (no prefix sharing past step 29, ≤ 1.156×) bound *deterministic* sharing. They do not bound a probabilistic, nonzero output difference.\n\n## 2. Method (prereg.md, sha 69c7ea527bd9…, written before any run; lane claim message 6149)\n- `diffpred.c` includes md5tunc.c (#3391, sha 8ab62221…) unchanged. Gates (in run7605.out): RFC 1321 vectors, the track fixture (score 13), md5tunc self-test PASS, and the trajectory h0 equal to full_h0, tunnel_h0 and md5_ref bytes on 4096 tunnel candidates (0 mismatches).\n- N = 2^20 pairs per rule, seed 7605. Arm T: 1024 tunnel bases × 1024 random x, with the modular and XOR difference of every output word Q25..Q61 (Q61 + IV_a = h0). Arm F: N random messages per bit, final h0 only. For every (rule, metric, word), the code records the **maximum multiplicity** of the difference and the value that attains it.\n- Decision rule: under uniform differences, about 0.0104 values per (rule, metric) are hit 3 or more times, and about 6.4e-7 are hit 4 or more times. A count of 5 or more on h0 is a flag, to be retested with seed 7606. No flag means a negative with a per-rule 95% bound.\n- Determinism: a rerun with 4 threads (instead of 8) gives a byte-identical program stdout (diffpred_stdout.txt, sha 7bd92cb3d64a…). run7605.out is the captured log: that stdout plus the local run-limited receipt trailer (exit code, wall time 215.8 s, process group id), which differs between runs.\n\n## 3. Results (analysis.txt)\n| output word | best modular difference: count / 2^20 (log2 p) | rule | best XOR difference: count (log2 p) | rule |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| Q25 | 368407 (−1.51) | add16 | 275513 (−1.93) | xor13 |\n| Q26 | 136302 (−2.94) | xor6 | 136302 (−2.94) | xor6 (δ = 0x80000000) |\n| Q27 | 83937 (−3.64) | add13 | 67926 (−3.95) | xor6 |\n| Q28 | 10974 (−6.58) | add15 | 6346 (−7.37) | xor24 |\n| Q29 | 3074 (−8.41) | add15 | 1375 (−9.57) | xor6 |\n| Q30 | 142 (−12.85) | xor6 | 52 (−14.30) | xor6 |\n| Q31 | 8 (−17.00) | xor6 | 3 (noise) | — |\n| Q32..Q61 | ≤ 3 (noise) | — | ≤ 3 (noise) | — |\n\n- **Final h0, all 1952 (rule, metric) pairs** (T 1120, F 832): maximum multiplicity 3, 0 flags. Values hit 3 or more times: 24 against 20.33 expected, P(X ≥ 24) = 0.235, consistent with uniform differences.\n- **Bound:** for every tested rule and metric, any single δ has **p ≤ 7.75/2^20 = 2^-17.05** (95%, Poisson, observed count ≤ 3). That is about 2^10 below the pay threshold. Summed over all 1952 checks, the gain with *free* checks is < **1.0144**. With 2-op checks, 1952 checks would cost about 14× a candidate, so the mechanism loses.\n- **Depth.** Even the best low-weight tunnel difference holds with p ≳ 2^-7 only through Q28 (5 steps after step 24), with p = 2^-8.4 at Q29 and 2^-17 at Q31. This is the probabilistic counterpart of #3123's deterministic ceiling at step 29. Allowing probability buys about one step, not a route to step 60.\n\n## 4. Why collision characteristics do not fit the final block (proven, elementary)\nFor any input of L ≤ 1024 bytes, the block that holds the length has m15 = 0 and m14 = 8L ≤ 8192 (RFC 1321 padding; the length fits in 32 bits). A same-length pair therefore has δm14 = δm15 = 0 in that block, and a pair of different lengths has |δm14| ≤ 8192 plus different padding bytes. Wang–Yu's MD5 message differences have δm14 = 2^31 in both blocks (Wang & Yu, EUROCRYPT 2005, as externally reported), so they cannot occur in the final block. The digest is always computed through that block. Chaining-value (pseudo-collision) differentials of den Boer–Bosselaers type need a prefix pair with that CV difference, followed by a 64-step differential through the final block. They are not measured here and stay open.\n\n## 5. What this changes\n- QUESTIONS 2: output prediction (\"free candidates\" from a differential) is closed for these two rule classes. Suggested line for research/QUESTIONS.md, item 2: \"Output prediction by low-weight differences is closed: best p ≤ 2^-17 for 560 Q9-tunnel and 416 single-bit rules (#this); Wang differences need δm14 ≠ 0, impossible in the final block.\"\n- No new route is proposed. Reopen if a characteristic is exhibited that holds from step 24 (or from any shared state) to step 60 with p ≥ 2^-7, or if a cheap prefix pair with a useful chaining-value difference is exhibited.\n\n## Sources\n- Return #3391, md5tunc.c, sha256 8ab62221d646d1dd174c3bd38bd94f1dc183be4f1880888119652abbf5d3bdd8 (tunnel, self-test, the `flip` mode it extends); #2622 (md5tun, flip statistics); #3123, #3057, #2801, #3005 (deterministic sharing limits); state of the art for all-zeros, v16 (#3720).\n- RFC 1321 (padding, message schedule).
