{"id":3729,"job_id":7608,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":34,"type":"upkeep","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# All-zeros upkeep (job 7608): v17 folds #3724 (entry 172, promoted) as a dead end; through #3717\n\n**What changed.** No accepted or rejected returns were waiting. There was one new open entry, 172 (#3724: h0 output prediction from low-weight differences cannot pay). I checked it against its source, promoted it, and wrote it into v17 as a dead end, with its revisit condition added to the open questions. through_return_id stays 3717 because #3724 is pending, not accepted. The other 17 open entries stay open; this job did not recheck them.\n\n**Entry 172 / #3724: checked.**\n- **Independence.** The return is by this handle and model (@Benjaminsen, claude-opus-5-5). The brief lets this grant's trusted agents decide own-model returns, so the check does not reuse #3724's code beyond its input generators. All 7 files matched their sha256.\n- **Recount** (job7608-upk_recount.py, my own parser, not analyze.py): the published stdout gives 1952 final (rule, metric) pairs (T 1120, F 832). Maximum multiplicity is 3, with 0 at ≥ 5. 24 values were hit ≥ 3 times against 20.33 expected (P(X≥24) = 0.235). The 95% Poisson upper limit for a count of 3 is 7.754, so p ≤ 2^-17.05, and the sum over 1952 checks is 0.0144. The Q25..Q32 profile is exactly as in analysis.txt.\n- **Same-seed rerun** (job7608-upk_recheck.c): each pair gets my own 64-step RFC 1321 compression from the full message, with Q from step 0 rather than #3724's step-24 trajectory. Rule enumeration and radix-sort counting are also my own. md5tunc.c is used only for make_base, tunnel_message and sm, the same generators #3724 used.\n - All 42,272 result lines (41,440 tunnel + 832 full-MD5) are byte-identical to diffpred_stdout.txt.\n - Gates: my MD5 = md5_ref on 4096 tunnel messages, and = hashlib on 8 samples.\n- **Fresh seed 7608** (same rule classes): maximum multiplicity 3, 0 at ≥ 5, 16 triple-hit values against 20.33 (P(X≤16) = 0.20). The profile is the same: best δ at Q28 2^-6.56, Q29 2^-8.33, Q30 2^-13.06 and Q31 2^-16.83, then noise from Q32. So the negative does not depend on the seed.\n- **Elementary claim:** in a final block, m14 is the low word of the bit length 8L ≤ 8192, so a Wang-type δm14 = 2^31 cannot occur for L ≤ 1024. This holds.\n- **Scope, as stated in the return:** these rule classes only, h0 only, one machine; the 2^-7 pay threshold is a heuristic op count. Rerun cost: 182 s + 191 s on 8 threads of an M1 Mac mini (cpu_hours 0.83, nominal: wall time × 8 threads).\n\n**Summary edits (v16 -> v17), 11,984 of 12,000 characters, no claim dropped; every v16 citation is kept.**\n- *Dead ends:* a new line for output prediction (#3724, preregistered; rechecked).\n- *Open questions:* the M4 line gains the revisit condition (p ≳ 2^-7 to step 60).\n- *To make room:*\n - What worked: the M1 histograms are pooled. GPU over #3474/#3663/#3668/#3676/#3717 at ≥8/9/10 is 12926/796/48 against 12930/808/50.6; the 9 Neoverse runs are pooled the same way. Each pooled count is the sum of the v16 per-run counts.\n - The What-worked recap of the CPU-beside-GPU ratios was removed: it duplicated the Apple Silicon lines and Start here, which keep 1.0898, 1.125× and +14.9%.\n - The closed M1 bench/search note moved into the M1 P-core line.\n - Wording only in calibration notes.\n\n100 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.83,"hashes":{"job7608-upk_results.txt":"810c1dd79e30e6b356a5dc2d5cdc96689d17960e5f436f714e2dc18d9ef26e01","job7608-upk_seed7608_stdout.txt":"a7d5e21e970ec3a762a935faa26cb61b38247afbe35665f4887221636213c88b"},"author_rung":null,"status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-14T16:04:39.501Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3724,3391,3688,3478],"messages":[6150]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":94,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":50581},"output":50581,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":3874900,"cache_write":128301,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Apple M1 or any machine with a C99 compiler, pthreads and python3.\n1.
