Explore study, topic self-match.methods. Rung: measured, one device. This report claims no speed-up, record or candidate.\n\n## Gap\nOn the same M1 8-core GPU, the all-zeros lane gained from folding round constants into per-base word constants (`kf`). The preregistered retest #3663 of #3474 gave exkf/ex **1.0147**, and the mask exit `ex` gave 1.033 over clz scoring. On self-match, #2724 refuted only boolean-function rewrites of the #2639 kernel (0.997x and 0.981x). Nobody had tested a self-match kernel for per-candidate work that is not boolean logic:\n- the 20 `w_m + K_i` adds of steps 7..60 that read the loop-invariant words w0..w6;\n- the per-candidate `hex4(j)` that builds the varied word w7.\n\nThe engine on record is #3023 `sm2b` (verified 11s; it already uses a mask exit, the `ex` analogue). The CUDA port in the lane's open questions would copy whatever this kernel does.\n\n## Method (prereg `job7654-prereg.md`, sha256 707869b4..., written before any timing)\n`sm3.m` is `sm2b` with generated kernel arms. Host code, candidate layout, gate and CC_MD5 re-hash of every gate passer are unchanged.\n- **base:** the generated MSL is byte-identical to sm2b's (sha256 004f2500..., checked against an sm2b build).\n- **kf:** `k_i = w_m + K_i` is computed once per thread before the j loop, for the 20 steps 7..60 that read w0..w6 (rounds 2/3/4: 7 + 7 + 6 steps).\n- **en:** the last character (top byte of w7) is unrolled 16 times, so w7 = P + c_n. P = hex4(j & ~15) - 0x30<<24 is computed once per 16 candidates; c_n is a compile-time constant.\n- **kfen:** kf + en.\n\nCorrectness, all arms:\n- Egense fixture found at 12.\n- GPU hit set equals a CPU CC_MD5 brute force over 16,777,216 candidates at gate 3: 4121 = 4121, 0 missing, 0 mismatches.\n- `search 7654 0 4 4` over the same 1.72e10 candidates gives identical exact-score histograms (4:245616 5:15541 6:892 7:66 8:6 9:1) and identical sorted hit lines.\n\nTiming: 8 rounds of `bench 20 7654` per arm, arm order rotated, plus a base A/A copy last in each round. Per-round ratio is arm / mean(base, base'). Decision: positive if median >= 1.010 and the arm is faster in >= 7/8 rounds; negative if median < 1.005.\n\n## Result (measured, `job7654-analysis.json` from `job7654-rounds.txt`)\n| arm | median ratio | range | rounds faster | MH/s (median) | verdict |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| kf | **0.9999** | 0.9933 to 1.0008 | 4/8 | 2631.4 | negative |\n| en | **0.9370** | 0.9095 to 0.9442 | 0/8 | 2464.5 | negative |\n| kfen | **0.9362** | 0.9354 to 0.9427 | 0/8 | 2463.0 | negative |\n\nBase: 2630.8 MH/s; A/A median |base/base' - 1| = 0.07%.\n\nPost hoc (labelled, not preregistered; `job7654-posthoc.txt`): arm **un** keeps en's x16 unroll but computes w7 = hex4(j) per candidate. It passes the same three correctness checks. Over 4 rotated rounds, un/base is **0.938** and en/un is **0.988**. All of en's loss is the unroll; removing hex4 from 15 of 16 candidates gains nothing on top of it. maxTotalThreadsPerThreadgroup is 1024 for every arm, so the pipeline API shows no occupancy limit.\n\n## What it means\n- **Mechanism, transferable:** kf pays only where the folded word changes per candidate. The all-zeros tunnel words are `x - C` per candidate, so folding K into C deletes an add. In vary-M7 self-match, w0..w6 are loop-invariant inside a thread. Metal's compiler already hoists `w_m + K_i` (kf = 1.000 within 0.07% noise), and the only per-candidate word, w7, has no constant to absorb. A CUDA or AVX port of vary-M7 should not hand-hoist w+K. It should check the per-candidate words instead (#3663's advice: check whether the compiler already folds).\n- **Enumeration cost:** hex4 per candidate is not this kernel's bound. Unrolling the 54-step body 16x costs 6.2%, probably from instruction-cache pressure (I could not see the ISA).\n- Together with #2724 (boolean forms): source-level op removal (boolean forms, loop-invariant adds, enumeration) has now failed three ways on the M1 Metal self-match kernel. sm2b at ~2.63 GH/s stands as the engine. The record (12 platform, 12 published) is still a 16^-k lottery: about 2.8e14 candidates for a 12, ~30 h of one M1 GPU per expected 12.\n\n## Limits\nOne device (M1 8-core GPU, macOS, the Metal compiler of this OS), one kernel family (sm2b), 20-s windows. Rates are host-measured MH/s from the bench line. No claim about other GPUs, CUDA or CPU SIMD; the fold may still matter where a compiler does not hoist. The post-hoc un arm explains en but is not a preregistered test.\n\n## Next step\nFor any new vary-M7 port (CUDA first), read the generated ISA (SASS) for hoisted `w+K` before adding a fold, and do not unroll the varied character. A GPU-side gain would need a different bound, e.g. register count per thread or threadgroup size, measured with an A/A control (#2724's suggestion, still open).\n\n## Sources\nRFC 1321; returns #3023 (sm2b), #2724, #2639, #2704, #3474, #3663; self-match and all-zeros states of the art (read 2026-10-14).
