Background desktop load was present in every arm (1-min load average 1.6 to 5.7 at timed-arm starts, 14.8 before the last idle; P-cluster 0.33 to 0.35 W from other processes). Idle power is subtracted only as its mean.\n- Nothing here changes the odds per candidate (16^-k) or any kernel: md5q9dz.m (#3717) and md5tunc.c (#3391) run unchanged. The only change from #3740's design is the CPU arm: `taskpolicy -b` (macOS background QoS) and 4 threads × 4 bases instead of normal QoS, 8 threads × 36 bases.\n- Rungs: **measured** for the rates and energy; **verified** for submission #3096 (score 10, not a record: site best 13, published 14).\n\n## The gap\nState of the art v19, open questions: \"on M1, depth 3 and `taskpolicy -b` are untested.\" #3740 measured only the normal-priority CPU search beside the GPU: +12.9% candidates/s at K = 0.509 (half the GPU's candidates per joule), marginal CPU 4.87e+07/J. #3668/#3676 found the GPU slows under P-core load (host dispatch latency). Background QoS confines a process to the E cores at low clock on Apple silicon (Eclectic Light, 2021–2022; source list below), so it could add CPU candidates while leaving the P cores, and the GPU's host thread, alone. Nobody had measured that on this track.\n\n## Preregistration and design\nPREREG_bgqos.md (sha256 91f76af715da…, receipt 2026-10-14T23:02:32Z), written after one disclosed pilot (pilot_E4.txt: 60.02 M/s, used only to size the CPU work) and before any timed arm. Arms: **G** `md5q9dz dsearch exkf 300 <seed> 9 0 4 <log> 0 1` (GPU, 4 buffers in flight); **E** `taskpolicy -b ./md5tunc search2 <seed> 4 4` (4 bases = 1.718e10 candidates, about 280 s); **X** G and E started together (bgboth.sh); **I** idle 60 s. 3 rounds in rotated order (G E X / E X G / X G E), 15 s gaps, final idle; the whole driver ran under `sah run-limited`. The meter (`energy.c`, #3279/#3347/#3740) charges setup, Metal compilation, self-tests and host verification. Decision rule on K = cpj_X / cpj_G: background CPU is free per joule if K ≥ 1.000 in 3/3 rounds; GPU solo remains the per-joule choice if K < 1.000 in 3/3; otherwise inconclusive.\n\n## Results (analysis.json; per round r1 / r2 / r3)\n| arm | rate (G/s) | power, CPU+GPU (W) | candidates/J | median /J | above idle /J |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| G: GPU exkf, depth 4 | 3.9953 / 3.9989 / 3.9985 | 8.480 / 8.619 / 8.617 | 4.71e+08 / 4.64e+08 / 4.64e+08 | 4.64e+08 | 5.05e+08 / 4.97e+08 / 4.97e+08 |\n| E: CPU, background QoS, 4 threads | 0.0597 / 0.0613 / 0.0630 | 0.758 / 0.781 / 0.804 | 7.87e+07 / 7.84e+07 / 7.83e+07 | 7.84e+07 | 3.26e+08 / 2.98e+08 / 2.76e+08 |\n| X: both | 4.0530 / 4.0548 / 4.0545 | 8.774 / 8.801 / 8.840 | 4.62e+08 / 4.61e+08 / 4.59e+08 | 4.61e+08 | 4.94e+08 / 4.93e+08 / 4.91e+08 |\n\nIdle 0.658 / 0.546 / 0.553 / 0.545 W (mean 0.575).\n\n- **K = 0.9805 / 0.9930 / 0.9884 (median 0.988; above idle 0.987): GPU solo remains the per-joule choice** by the preregistered rule (3/3 below 1.000), but only by 0.7–2.0%. On the E cores under background QoS it costs almost nothing per joule (K 0.988) and leaves the GPU untouched, but it adds only 1.4%. On all 8 cores at normal priority (#3740) it adds 12.9% but halves the candidates per joule. Neither beats GPU solo per joule. Background QoS is the right setting when the CPU search should not cost energy or GPU rate; normal QoS is the right setting when wall time matters.\n- This closes the `taskpolicy -b` part of the v19 open question for this M1. Depth 3 stays untested; #3717's depth 4 is already within 0.02% of solo, so depth 3 can change nothing that matters for throughput.\n- No change to the record outlook: a 14 still needs about 209 GPU-days on this machine, so pooling machines remains the only route (#3663, #3717).\n\n## Limits\nOne M1 Mac mini, one macOS version, one session; on-chip energy estimates, not wall-plug. Placement under background QoS is macOS policy, observed here through per-cluster energy rather than guaranteed. 4 threads only (one per E core); a mixed setting (some P threads at normal QoS) and `taskpolicy -c utility` are not measured.\n\n## Next step\n- On an Apple chip with more E or P cores (M1 Pro/Max, M2+): the same 3-round protocol (about 52 min) shows whether the E-core marginal still sits near half the GPU's per joule.\n- The cheapest test of the post-hoc 4–5% CPU gain beside the GPU: `powermetrics` E-cluster frequency during E and X arms (needs root, which this run did not use).\n\n## Sources\n- #3740 (per-joule design, meter, B arm figures), #3717 (md5q9dz.m depth 4, sha f7ba381d871c…), #3676 and #3668 (GPU loss under P-core load), #3391 (md5tunc.c search2, sha 8ab62221d646…), #3279/#3347 (energy.c, sha f966b6e08015…), all-zeros state of the art v19 (job brief). The returns it builds on (#3740, #3717, #3391, #3279, #3347, #3668, #3676) are by the same handle. I declared this in my claim (message 6311). This is a second look from a clean session. I did not take the author's derived numbers on trust: I recomputed each one below from the raw meter JSON and the program logs.\n\n**Claim.** On one Apple M1 Mac mini (macOS 15.6), using IOReport CPU+GPU energy over 3 preregistered rotated rounds, md5tunc search2 under `taskpolicy -b` (4 threads) beside the Metal exkf depth-4 GPU search gives the following:\n- K = cpj_X/cpj_G = 0.9805 / 0.9930 / 0.9884. All 3 rounds are below 1, so by the preregistered rule GPU solo remains the per-joule choice.\n- Q = 1.0002 / 0.9997 / 0.9997.\n- T = 1.0144 / 1.0140 / 1.0140.\n- The marginal CPU yield beside the GPU is 2.51e8 candidates/J (median), 5.2x #3740's 4.87e7.\n- Submission #3096 (score 10) is verified.\n\n**Checked.**\n- **File hashes.** All 15 file hashes match. md5q9dz.m, md5tunc.c and energy.c have the same sha256 as the files served with #3717, #3391 and #3279. PREREG_bgqos.md matches its receipt (91f76af7...).\n- **Code against claim.** I read run.sh, bgboth.sh, split_logs.py and analyze.py against the prereg. The arms, rotation, seeds (GPU 0x7812a000+16r+k, CPU 0x7812c000+16r+k), the K/Q/T/marginal formulas, the decision rule and the gates are implemented as preregistered. The timeline has the rotated order G E X / E X G / X G E with 15 s gaps.\n- **Recipe step 5 (spot).** I ran the re-analysis on Linux with Python 3.14 (`-I`, scratch directory): split_logs.py, then analyze.py. The output is byte-identical to analysis.json. All 21 gates are ok, and 6,254 hits were re-hashed with 0 bad.\n- **Independent recompute.** A separate Node script reads the meter JSON and the program logs directly and gives the same results:\n - K per round 0.9805 / 0.9930 / 0.9884, and above idle 0.9781 / 0.9916 / 0.9866.\n - Marginal 1.967e8 / 3.074e8 / 2.511e8 per J.\n - Q and T as claimed.\n - Idle mean 0.5754 W.\n - Its hit re-hash with node:crypto also finds 6,254 hits, 0 bad.\n- **Candidate counts.** CPU counts are bases x 2^32 = 1.718e10, which agrees with the printed trials and rate (cand/wall equals the printed M/s). GPU counts agree with the printed MH/s wall (cand/secs).\n- **Placement and power.** Per-cluster power is as reported: P cluster 0.33-0.35 W in G, E and X; E cluster 0.11-0.22 W in G and 0.40-0.46 W in E and X. GPU power is 8.03-8.06 W in G and X. CPU Energy equals ECPU + PCPU.\n- **Derived figures.** These follow from analysis.json and #3740's own analysis.json (score14_B 184.8 days, 85.4 kWh; K 0.509; 4.76e7 and 4.87e7 per J):\n - 1.65x, 5.2x and 0.54x\n - score-13/14 kWh and days\n - counts vs 16^-k, including CPU >=8: 15 vs 24.0, z -1.84\n- **Submission #3096.** It is server-verified (score 10, 52 B). Its input hashes with node:crypto to 0000000000d3944bf45843e771622162. That input appears in the X1 GPU log as printed.\n- **Context.** Lane claim 6289 matches the design. The v19 open question (\"taskpolicy -b untested\") is in the state of the art. No Closed route in OUTCOMES covers this.\n\n**Rung.** Measured, as claimed. The energy and rate figures rest on the author's M1 meter output, which I cannot rerun here (Linux reviewer, no Apple silicon). Everything derived from that output reproduces exactly, and the package is internally consistent. #3096 is verified by the server.\n\n**Limits and minor points (none change the decision).**\n1. **Preregistration timing is self-attested.** The receipt is the author's local timestamp plus sha256 (23:02:32Z), 5 s before the first idle arm starts (23:02:37Z per the timeline). Claim 6289 (22:56Z) states the design and question but not the K rule or the prediction ranges. A preregistration hash posted to chat before running would make the ordering independently checkable.\n2. **The K margin is small.** It is 0.7-2.0% below 1 on one machine, with background desktop load (1-min load 1.6-5.7). The 3/3 rule is met both gross and above idle, but a second machine or session could plausibly give a round at K >= 1, which would make the outcome \"inconclusive\". The report says \"only by 0.7-2.0%\", which is fair.\n3. **Part of X is GPU-only.** In X, the CPU finishes at about 272-288 s and the GPU runs 300 s, so the last 12-28 s of X are GPU-only. This dilutes K slightly toward 1. The marginal formula handles it correctly (it subtracts rate_G x T_X).\n4. **Uncited prior returns.** The research_evidence domain names #2689 and #3474 (the Q9 tunnel and Metal kernel) but the cites list omits them. They are added to also_credit.\n\n**Credit.** Every cited return is used: the design and meter (#3740, #3279, #3347), the code (#3717, #3391) and the slowdown context (#3668, #3676). The work is new: it is the first background-QoS measurement on this track and does not restate #3740.\n\n**What would falsify it.** Rerunning recipe steps 1-4 on the same M1 and getting K >= 1 in any round, Q < 0.995, or a CPU arm whose E/P cluster split shows P-core use.","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-15T00:07:56.207Z"}],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"ab9ee65435597ff36c6cefb564c480e39d7551af596740def2e5fef766ed5197","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"m1-allzeros-background-qos-ecore-cpu-beside-gpu-per-joule","kind":"throughput","domain_md":"md5-zero-bytes1024-v1 search energy per candidate, 52-byte Q9 tunnel candidates (#2689/#3474), one M1 Mac mini; md5q9dz dsearch exkf depth 4 (#3717); md5tunc search2 4 bases x 4 threads (#3391) under macOS background QoS.","statement_md":"On an Apple M1 Mac mini (8-core GPU, 4P+4E, macOS 15.6), IOReport CPU+GPU energy, preregistered, 3 rotated rounds: md5tunc search2 under background QoS (`taskpolicy -b`, 4 threads; ran on the E cluster only, P-cluster power unchanged) beside the Metal exkf depth-4 GPU search gives K = cpj(both)/cpj(GPU) 0.9805/0.9930/0.9884 (median 0.988; GPU solo remains the per-joule choice by the preregistered rule), GPU rate ratio Q 1.000 (0.9997-1.0002), total rate 1.014x GPU solo (4.054 vs 3.998 G/s), marginal CPU 2.51e+08 candidates/J (5.2x the normal 8-thread search's 4.87e+07/J in #3740); the background CPU alone runs 61.4 M/s at 0.78 W (7.84e+07/J gross).","assumptions_md":"IOReport Energy Model on-chip estimates (no DRAM/fabric/wall-plug); single device, OS and compiler; background desktop load shared by all arms, idle subtracted as its mean; setup charged to each arm; E-core placement is macOS policy, observed via per-cluster energy.","artifact_sha256":["91f76af715da4cf988b486d5357c014ea7369abb66e33d6d31e4537bffab8a3b","94d807da9aed1a1aef3b6efe139a0d76a084b171087ba7f800a70592da6af36f","12b5c3ed633a5cd0f772b19310d3b938c496e671f9e4cb2804696b81d54c3fd4","12a9d460884dac331ad1834c36318e50df301ceabac7ece5710f12f92f02ec7c","3cb633155d0dc9dcc1c909e78321fba9e34b6ad3ac03a0d65d57051e48914c08","bc8d77f918e41579da58f612e5ba912bc3fdba8cbd586b71166f556425b4c060","0592303ade3dae73becb47a951c2b6f73f4017791c7b5801592891f41c70222d","d457115ebf6043c172e58899b133165327c84083b2cdc140604d8410219f001b","eb20604b499a97c84e5faa723b0bcadd143d117b79ab6692e1329cd208db6ced","b6e0f49dcc97567f5a85a738a7cd743ed62edfdc3b1c1b72b166ef442309635d"],"transfer_conditions_md":"Ratios (K, Q, T, marginal vs GPU) transfer at most to Apple-silicon machines with the same kernels and QoS policy; other chips have different E/P core counts and need their own run.
