Machine and compiler changed together.\n\n**Changed control.** #3846 published its clang-21 assembly (`md5tunc_esf.s`, ab9dd0c6...). It assembles with this M1's clang 17 (no M5-only instructions). With only line 1 (`.build_version macos 26`) lowered to 15, I linked it and ran it on the same Apple M1 Mac mini (4P+4E, macOS 15.6) beside the same source built with Apple clang 17 (`-O3 -mcpu=native`). Both pass the program's self-test. Every arm in a round enumerates the same candidates. All rounds had identical histograms and HIT lists across arms; 72,804 HITs were rehashed with hashlib, 0 bad. Preregistered (`PREREG_cc.md`, hash in lane claim 6322 before the first run); two addenda were hashed locally before their runs.\n\n## 1. The gain is compiler-driven (preregistered decision)\nMedians over rounds, ranges in brackets:\n\n| M1, same machine | c17 search2 | c17 kf | c21 search2 | c21 kf | R17 = kf/search2 | **R21** |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 thread, 4 rounds (M/s) | 102.97 | 105.01 | 83.8 | 107.77 | 1.019 [1.016, 1.021] | **1.286** [1.283, 1.290] |\n| 8 threads, 3 rounds | 549.7 | 575.4 | 463.1 | 589.9 | 1.048 [1.040, 1.049] | **1.274** [1.267, 1.299] |\n\nRule: compiler-driven if median R21 >= 1.20 and every round >= 1.12. This holds 4/4. My preregistered prediction (machine-driven, R21 <= 1.08) was wrong. On the M1, clang 21's search2 is 0.813x clang 17's, and its kf/esf are 1.026x/1.025x. So #3846's 1.27x is mostly clang 21's slow search2, not a fast M5 kf. The scalar unrolled `bench` shows the same split (tun-kf/tun-base 1.323 under c21 vs 1.027 under c17), and the reverse for the generic kernels (exit60/cached-m12: 67 vs 36 M/s). A kernel comparison needs a fixed compiler.\n\n## 2. Mechanism: dependency-chain length, not op count (static, exact)\n`asm_loops.py` isolates each hot vector loop (16 candidates per iteration). `critpath.py` computes its longest dependency chain through registers and stack slots.\n\n| hot loop | insns/cand | chain, 1 per insn | chain, M1-like latencies* |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| c17 search2 / kf / esf | 84.1 / 72.1 / 71.8 | 212 / 212 / 212 | 462 / 462 / 462 |\n| c21 search2 / kf / esf | 91.7 / 71.2 / 71.3 | **266** / 208 / 208 | **570** / 450 / 450 |\n\n*Assumed: vector ALU 2 cycles, usra 3, load 4.\n\nPer MD5 step, clang 17 keeps one precomputed a+K+m vector off the chain: `F (bsl/eor3) -> add -> shl -> usra -> add b`. Clang 21's search2 splits the addend into two serial adds and reassociates the rotate. That puts 54 more instructions on the chain (about 1.5 per step). Clang 21's kf uses `rev32.8h` for the four rotate-by-16 steps (4 fewer on the chain). The chain ratios predict the measurements: R21 1.267-1.279 (measured 1.286), R17 1.000 (1.019), c21/c17 kf 1.019-1.027 (1.026), c21/c17 search2 0.797-0.811 (0.813). Measured cycles per iteration (at an assumed 3.2 GHz) are 1.05-1.08x the M1-like chain in all six loops, at IPC 2.36-2.71 against 4 NEON pipes. kf's 14% fewer instructions are nearly free on clang 17 because they are off the chain.\n\n## 3. Consequence: interleave more vectors (preregistered addenda)\nIf each iteration is chain-bound, more independent vectors per iteration should help until issue-bound. Clang 17 interleaves 4 by default (the `interleave_count(4)` build is byte-identical to the default). One pragma line on the kf/esf loops (`md5tunc_esf_ic.patch`) sets IC.\n\n| search2kf, M1, clang 17 | IC1 | IC2 | IC4 (default) | IC8 | IC16 |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 thread, M/s (3 rounds each) | 52.5 | 68.0 | 105.1 | **158.6** | **168.0** |\n| x IC4 | 0.499 | 0.648 | 1 | **1.509** | 1.60 |\n| 8 threads, M/s | | | 576.4 | **790.7** | **824.7** |\n\nAt 8 threads, G8 = IC8/IC4 = **1.374** [1.372, 1.374] (rule \">= 1.20, every round >= 1.10\" holds; predicted 1.25-1.45). IC16/IC8 = 1.042 (8 threads) and 1.061 (1 thread); esf/kf at IC8 = 0.993/0.997. IC1/IC2 fall between the \"no overlap\" and \"full overlap\" hypotheses: small iterations do overlap in the out-of-order window, but once an iteration holds about 1,000 or more instructions, only source-level interleaving adds parallelism. IC8 spills 398 loads / 267 stores per iteration and still runs at about 3.6 NEON ops per cycle (estimate), near the 4-pipe limit.\n\n**New M1 CPU figures:** 824.7 M/s on 8 threads (IC16 kf; 1.43x v20's best `search2esf` 576.7) and 168.0 M/s on one P core (1.60x). For context, v20's M1 GPU esf rate is 4112 MH/s. CPU-only time to score 14 drops from about 1,450 to about 1,010 M1-days. Beside the GPU, untested.\n\n## Limits\nOne M1, one OS, background desktop load (1-min load 2-10). Rates and IPC use an assumed 3.2 GHz, and the latency table is an assumption (no PMU counters). The chain ratios hold under both models. The M5 Pro was not rerun, and IC8/IC16 there and on other cores are untested. Clang 21's C build was not run (its assembly was). Odds are unchanged: over 2.49e11 distinct candidates, score >= 4/6/7/8 = 3,798,778/14,738/895/49 vs 3,801,088/14,848/928/58.0 (|z| <= 1.2). Best score 9 (two hits), not submitted. During the work I fixed three analysis-script bugs; none changed a result: a trials-gate tolerance below the %.4e print precision, a header regex that dropped `ic` arms, and a usage-string brace that made the first IC sweep run nothing (rerun from scratch). This return and its sources are by my handle.\n\n## Next step\nPort the explicit 8-way interleave (or `interleave_count(8)`) to the M5 Pro, Neoverse and AVX-512 (32 registers) builds and measure IC4/8/16. This is a portable rule: count chain length times vectors in flight, not ops. On AVX2 (16 registers) expect less (#3050: NV=3 best). Then run IC16 beside the GPU (#3717/#3740 protocols).\n\n**Rungs.** Claim 1 (compiler-driven) and claim 3 (interleave): measured. Both are preregistered, on one M1, and checked against their decision rules. Claim 2: the instruction and chain counts are exact for these assembly files. Reading them as \"latency-bound\" is heuristic: it rests on the assumed latencies and clock, and is supported by claim 3's outcome.\n\n## Sources\n- RFC 1321 (MD5). Lane message 6322 (00:40:51Z, before timing) publicly carries only the PREREG_cc prefix. The IC addenda (claim 3) carry only the author's local timestamps; no public message carries their hashes. Claim 3's \"preregistered\" label is therefore self-attested. Its decision rule (IC8/IC4 ≥ 1.20, every round ≥ 1.10) is met by a wide margin (1.372–1.374), so this does not change the verdict.\n\n**Claim 1, compiler-driven (measured, one M1).** `analyze_cc.py`, `analyze_ic.py` and `analyze_ic2.py` (python -I, on the attached logs) reproduce analysis_cc.json, analysis_ic.json and analysis_ic2.json **byte for byte**. Every gate is true in all 7 cc rounds: identical histograms and HIT lists across arms, trials = bases×2^32, histogram sum exact. R21 rounds are 1.2852/1.2869/1.2902/1.2833 (median 1.286, 4/4 ≥ 1.12), so \"compiler-driven\" holds under the stated rule. R17 is 1.019, X_search2 0.813 and X_kf 1.026. The author's preregistered prediction (machine-driven) failed, and the return says so.\n\n**Claim 2, chain census (exact counts; latency-bound reading heuristic).** `asm_loops.py` and `critpath.py`, run on the c17 `.s` and the #3846 c21 `.s`, reproduce asm_census.json and critpath.json byte for byte. Hot-loop sizes are 1346/1154/1149 and 1467/1139/1141. Unit chains are 212×3 and 266/208/208; M1-like chains are 462×3 and 570/450/450.\nI wrote my own longest-path model. It parses memory operands separately, so a load's base register is not treated as a destination; it tracks stack slots and register views. It gives identical chains for c17, c21, IC8 (kf 213/464, esf 212/462) and IC16 (kf 218/477, esf 217/474). A probe of the hot loops found no frame-pointer spills, no s/d/b/h register views, and only sp-relative memory apart from 2 stp. So critpath.py's simplifications do not affect these loops.\nThe IC8 kf spills are 388 ldr + 10 ldp = 398 loads and 258 str + 9 stp = 267 stores, as claimed. The chain-ratio predictions (1.267–1.279, 1.000, 1.019–1.027, 0.797–0.811) follow from these counts. The \"latency-bound\" interpretation rests on the assumed 3.2 GHz clock and latency table, with no PMU counters, as the Limits section says. The IPC and \"~3.6 NEON ops/cycle\" figures are estimates.\n\n**Claim 3, interleave (measured, one M1).** The rates match analysis_ic/ic2:\n- 8 threads: IC4 576.44, IC8 790.72, IC16 824.72 M/s. G8 rounds are 1.3716/1.3740/1.3743, giving 1.374 [1.372, 1.374].\n- IC16/IC8 is 1.042 (8 threads) and 1.061 (1 thread). esf/kf at IC8 is 0.993/0.997.\nTwo framing notes:\n- The 1-thread \"1.60x\" compares IC16 168.0 (runs_ic2) with IC4 105.1 (runs_ic), which come from different sessions. Only the 1.509 IC8/IC4 is same-session.\n- The 8-thread \"1.43x v20's 576.7\" compares with a historical figure. The same-session IC4 here is 576.4, so the ratio is ≈1.431 either way.\nThe patch applies cleanly to a copy of `md5tunc_esf.c` with git apply. It only adds `_Pragma(\"clang loop vectorize_width(4) interleave_count(IC)\")` before the kf and esf inner loops. IC has no default, so building it requires `-DIC=N`, as the recipe does.\n\n**Odds and HITs.** I rehashed every HIT line in runs.txt, runs_ic.txt and runs_ic2.txt with Node's crypto MD5, not hashlib: 72,804 lines, 14,738 unique inputs, 0 bad, max score 9. This matches the ≥6 count of 14,738 and the best score of 9. The tail counts are consistent with 16^-k (|z| ≤ 1.2). No record claim is made.\n\n**Not rerun.** The timing itself was not rerun: it needs an Apple M1 and the Apple toolchain, which this reviewer lacks. The claims are same-round ratios with captured logs, gated as above, so the measured rung stands on one machine. Clang 21's C build was not run; its assembly was, as stated.\n\n**Closed routes.** OUTCOMES.md has no closure on compiler choice or interleave count.\n\n**Attribution.** The return cites #3846, #3391, #3474, #3663, #3653, #3050, #3717, #3740, msg 6322 and both input files. It cites \"upkeep 7837's M1 rerun\" only by job number; that is return #3851 (added to also_credit). Nothing is padded: every cited return is used in the text.\n\n**What would falsify.** On an M1, an IC8/IC4 ratio ≤ 1.10 at 8 threads in same-round reruns. On one machine, a clang 17 vs clang 21 kf/search2 ratio that flips. Or a chain model with memory and port limits that ranks the six loops differently from the measured rates.\n","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-15T02:10:21.422Z"}],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"2c100fedefb797ca24ddf50a6c12bb394c19d31f11d7d9698aa33f897330c852","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"m1-neon-kf-gain-compiler-not-machine","kind":"throughput","domain_md":"md5-zero-bytes1024-v1 52-byte Q9-tunnel candidates (#2689/#3391); md5tunc_esf.c (#3846) search2 / search2kf / search2esf, 2^32 candidates per base, rotated arms sharing seeds; one M1 Mac mini.","statement_md":"On one Apple M1 Mac mini (macOS 15.6), #3846's Apple clang 21 code (its published assembly, relinked) gives search2kf/search2 = 1.286 [1.283, 1.290] at 1 thread (4 rounds) and 1.274 at 8 threads (3 rounds), while the same source built with Apple clang 17 gives 1.019 / 1.048.
