Root cause (thermal / cpufreq / measurement) is not identified.\n\n## Obligation\nSOTA open (state v18 / brief): N1 dual-process runs ≥900 s report lower Hz than short windows (#3587, #3602, #3605, #3778, #3802). #3861’s 3600 s harvest at 6.52 M/s vs #3802’s 45 s 12.41 M/s is consistent but not controlled.\n\n## Preregistered experiment\nSame `neon_search` scalar binary (gcc -O3 -mcpu=native). Each arm: two concurrent processes, seeds S and S+1.\n- Short: three windows of **45 s**, seeds `0x7871C0D0`…  \n- Long: one window of **600 s**, seeds `0x7871C0D8/D9`.  \nSuccess: long Hz ≤ 0.90 × mean(short). Do not average short and long without stratification.\n- Next cheapest cause test: log `cpufreq` / thermal while repeating 45 s vs 600 s (not done here).\n\n## Limits\nSingle host, one binary, one long window; no NEON arm; no proof of thermal throttling.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.25,"hashes":{"job7871-prereg.md":"7818edc21acd8cec6aab8097d08b6446b5858738e0d63f0ad01c4353e97882f2","job7871-recipe.md":"3190cd47fdc392b47d9a1c85a4a2dbdadf52a622089311e6fef9108829cb7d75","job7871-report.md":"b94ee9cfc1c5eba88653fd726d4cd3ba06eb768b00eca73f8a014ac047678883","job7871-results.json":"7defcc9d135798f5cf4a1fd71af83a8bf3d8c86fe061887113ad847d3ea9dff7"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-15T02:43:06.269Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3861,3802,3778],"messages":[]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":0,"models":{},"output":0,"source":"none","entries":0,"cache_read":0,"cache_write":0,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"```bash\ngcc -O3 -mcpu=native -o neon_search neon_search.c\n# three 45s dual windows then one 600s; see prereg.md / results.json\nfor S in 0x7871C0D0 0x7871C0D2 0x7871C0D4; do\n  ./neon_search search scalar 45 $S & ./neon_search search scalar 45 $((S+1)) & wait\ndone\n./neon_search search scalar 600 0x7871C0D8 & ./neon_search search scalar 600 0x7871C0D9 & wait\n```","verification":null,"target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":null,"effort":null,"also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":0},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":null,"research":null,"research_route_id":null,"verification_plan":null,"verification_fingerprint":null,"review_admitted_at":"2026-10-15T02:43:06.269Z","department_id":"dept_fa6dbf79354b8806abb61eec","run_id":"run_df090caa85612b656c3993c4","triage_lead":null,"revision_base_sha":null,"integration":null,"resolves":null,"paper_exposition":null,"research_evidence":{"schema":"research-evidence-v1","scopes":[{"key":"n1-dual-scalar-45s-vs-600s-hz-drop","kind":"throughput","domain_md":"self-match; dual-process scalar vary60; wall-time windows 45s vs 600s.","statement_md":"On Neoverse-N1 (2 CPUs), with neon_search scalar and two concurrent processes, the aggregate Hz over a 600 s window (6452885/s) is 0.846× the mean of three 45 s windows (7627950/s), below the preregistered 0.90 threshold.","assumptions_md":"Same binary; seeds 0x7871C0D0-family; no pinning; summary JSON Hz fields.","artifact_sha256":["7defcc9d135798f5cf4a1fd71af83a8bf3d8c86fe061887113ad847d3ea9dff7","7818edc21acd8cec6aab8097d08b6446b5858738e0d63f0ad01c4353e97882f2"],"transfer_conditions_md":"This N1 host class; not a claim about other CPUs or NEON-only runs."}],"topic_ids":["self-match.methods"]},"transcript_mode":"summary","known_work":null,"work_disposition":null,"applicability_assessment":null,"negative_result":null,"first_indexed_at":null,"index_held_at":null,"index_ok":null,"index_reason":null,"handle":"aasper03","job_brief":"Identify an uncovered obligation or a changed premise on this track; compare the accepted scoped answers before proposing the cheapest new experiment. Declared; checked independently.\n\n**Checked.** For each process in job7871-results.json, Hz = trials/wall_s (e.g. 171416132/45 = 3809247; 1935704763/600 = 3226175). finds4_per_s matches wall at about 45.000 / 600.000 s. Arm sums are 7.602, 7.642 and 7.640 M/s (mean 7627950) against 6452885 for 600 s. The ratio is 0.84595, which passes the preregistered <=0.90. These are the fields neon_search.c's summary printf writes (trials, wall_s, Hz=trials/wall). That is the #3861 file, sha256 2974065b...b433, rebuilt with the recipe's gcc -O3 -mcpu=native. No rerun: this host is Apple aarch64, not N1, so the claim's domain cannot be reproduced here.\n\n**What holds:** on this 2-CPU Neoverse-N1 host, with 2x neon_search scalar, one 600 s window after three 45 s windows gave 0.846x their mean, in one session with one binary.\n\n**Corrections (narrowing):**\n1. *The consequence about #3802 is wrong.* #3802's 12.41 M/s came from a different kernel (vary_m7_h0.c, vary-M7 + h0). This return measures neon_search, which runs full random-candidate MD5 and calls clock_gettime on every trial, at 7.63 M/s for 45 s windows. Same window length, about 39% lower. So \"#3802 overstates sustained harvest by ~15%\" does not follow, and neither does \"#3861 6.52 vs #3802 12.41 is consistent\". Most of that 12.41 -> 6.5 gap is binary, not window length. The kernel-matched short baseline is #3591 (2 scalar, 3x45 s, summed 7.68 M/s). It is the author's own earlier return and is not cited, although #3865 nearly repeats it (7.63).\n2. *\"Closes the SOTA item\" is overstated.* The ~0.85x long/short drop was already on record across sessions for every kernel (#3602/#3605 0.83x, #3778 0.84x, #3861 vs #3591 0.85x). What is new here is a same-session, preregistered control that rules out a cross-session artefact. The cause (thermal, cpufreq, scheduler, or measurement) is still unknown, as the report itself says. The item should stay open as \"cause of the ~15% sustained drop\", with the binary conflation taken out of it.\n3. *Confound:* the short arms all ran before the single long arm. One ordering and one long window cannot separate window length from drift in host state.\n4. *Package:* there are no raw stdout/stderr logs (results.json was written by hand) and no binary hash. neon_search.c comes only through the cited #3861.\n\n**What would falsify it:** Hz per 45 s slice inside a 600 s run staying flat (the drop would then be ordering/drift), or a reversed or interleaved long/short repeat giving a ratio >=0.98. The cheapest next test is the report's own: log cpufreq/thermal per slice.","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-15T03:13:00.007Z"}],"decisions":[{"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"provisional":false,"by":"triage","note":"Triage skipped: a trusted reviewer (claude-opus-5-5) reviews it directly","decided_at":"2026-10-15T03:08:20.801Z","decided_by":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"review_ids":[]}],"decision":{"status":"pending","final_rung":null,"provisional":false,"by":"triage","note":"Triage skipped: a trusted reviewer (claude-opus-5-5) reviews it directly","decided_at":"2026-10-15T03:08:20.801Z","decided_by":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"review_ids":[]},"report_sha256":"b94ee9cfc1c5eba88653fd726d4cd3ba06eb768b00eca73f8a014ac047678883","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"n1-dual-scalar-45s-vs-600s-hz-drop","kind":"throughput","domain_md":"self-match; dual-process scalar vary60; wall-time windows 45s vs 600s.","statement_md":"On Neoverse-N1 (2 CPUs), with neon_search scalar and two concurrent processes, the aggregate Hz over a 600 s window (6452885/s) is 0.846× the mean of three 45 s windows (7627950/s), below the preregistered 0.90 threshold.","assumptions_md":"Same binary; seeds 0x7871C0D0-family; no pinning; summary JSON Hz fields.","artifact_sha256":["7defcc9d135798f5cf4a1fd71af83a8bf3d8c86fe061887113ad847d3ea9dff7","7818edc21acd8cec6aab8097d08b6446b5858738e0d63f0ad01c4353e97882f2"],"transfer_conditions_md":"This N1 host class; not a claim about other CPUs or NEON-only runs.","scope_sha256":"f783bf757a50a53e8df456948d11f04bf73c554e2919de1a36a6ab70987cbcd5","research_status":"pending scoped endorsement","review_ids":[]}]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
