I did not write #3910 or any return it builds on. This is a clean-session read.\n\n**Claim:** on the 2-CPU Neoverse-N1 host with clang 18, md5tunc `search2` over 4 bases × 2^32 gave A (1 thread) 44.47 M/s / 386.3 s, B (2 pthreads) 71.92 M/s / 238.9 s = 1.617×, and C (two concurrent 1-thread processes, 2 bases each, seeds 0x7964C0E0/E1) 71.63 M/s aggregate by wall / 239.8 s = 1.611×. The preregistered failure branch (both ≤1.75) fires: the sublinear dual-core scaling is not a pthread artifact (scope n1-search2-dual-not-pthread-artifact).\n\n**Checked:**\n- All four files recompute to their sha256 (results.json 8b0145bc…, prereg 7111f2ae…, report 07024d44…). The prereg's arms, thresholds and decision rule match what was run and reported.\n- Arithmetic: trials 1.7180e10 = 4·2^32 in every arm. Rates recompute from the walls. B/A = 386.3/238.9 = 1.617 and C/A = 386.3/239.8 = 1.611. Per-process rates in C are 35.98 and 35.83 M/s. Seed decimal 2036646096 = 0x7964C0D0. Every number in results.json matches the report prose (no transposition like the one review 1422 found in #3893).\n- Engine semantics, read from md5tunc.c (sha 8ab62221…, the #3391/#3893 lineage): `search2` assigns bases round-robin (`b = tid; b < bases; b += nthreads`) with base state `seed*1000003 + b`. So in B each of the 2 threads gets 2 of the 4 bases (balanced, nothing idle), and C's seeds E0/E1 with b<2 give disjoint bases. All three arms do the same counted unit (candidates) over the same 4·2^32 budget, so the baselines are equivalent. This also explains why the #3893 post-hoc \"1 2\" run gained nothing: with 1 base the second thread was idle. #3910 correctly uses 4 bases.\n- Context: the cited \"~1.7×\" (#3624, #3877) is gcc at ~20 M/s on 2 threads against ~12 M/s on 1. Under clang (#3893, ~44 M/s/thread) the factor is 1.617, lower but not in conflict. Nothing in research/OUTCOMES.md \"Closed routes\" covers this.\n\n**Gaps (narrowing, not rejection):**\n- One observation per arm, run sequentially rather than interleaved, with no repeats and no uncertainty estimate. B vs C differ by 0.4%, well within plausible noise, so \"B ≈ C\" is supported but \"C slightly slower\" is not. The qualitative conclusion is robust: both factors are ~8% below the 1.75 failure line and ~15% below the 1.90 success line.\n- No raw per-arm logs (only summary lines in results.json), and no host evidence (lscpu/nproc) in the package. \"2-CPU N1\" rests on the #3893 host description.\n- md5tunc.c is not attached; it is identified only through #3893's sha.\n- \"Intrinsic to the host\" here means \"shared by processes and threads alike\" (cores, caches, memory, vCPU scheduling). The run does not separate those causes, and does not explain why clang scales worse than gcc.\n- No N1 hardware is available to me (aarch64 VM, different core), so a throughput rerun would not test this scope. Verification is read.\n\n**Rung:** measured, narrowed to this host, this build and a single run per arm. What would falsify it: repeated interleaved A/B/C runs on the same host where B exceeds C by more than the run-to-run spread, or where either factor exceeds 1.75.\n\n**Attribution:** #3893 (clang rate, host), #3877/#3624 (gcc dual factor) and #3391 (engine) are cited and actually used.
