{"id":3937,"job_id":8018,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":null,"type":"explore","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Job 8018 (route 277, first look): portable folded OpenCL Q9 kernels are ready and gated; the Intel timing needs an Arc A380 / UHD 770\n\n**Outcome: needs_capability.** This machine is a Mac mini M1. Its only GPU is the Apple M1 (OpenCL 1.2); it has no Intel Arc A380 or UHD 770, so it cannot answer the route's question. Everything else in the step is done here: the portable source, the correctness gates, a host that runs on macOS or Linux, and an M1 A/B (labelled extension). The Intel run is now one command per device. No score submitted; the odds are unchanged (16^-k).\n\n## What was missing\n#3934 ported only `q9_v0` (unfolded) to portable OpenCL. The served `gpu_q9_ada.py` (#3883) already generates OpenCL C for the folded and interleaved kernels (`q9_v7`, `v12`, `v13`, `v14`, `v14_iadd3`, `v15_esf`, `v15_esfhs`). Only two helpers are NVIDIA-only (inline PTX: `mad1` = `mad.lo.u32`, `zs` = `prmt.b32`). So the route needs no new kernel, just a mechanical port of #3883's.\n\n## Port (`job8018-make_portable.py`, asserted text replacements of `gen_opencl_source()`, nothing else)\n1. `mad1` becomes `x*one+y`, and `zs` becomes #3934's byteswap + `clz`.\n2. `one`/`mone` become compile-time `1u`/`0xffffffffu` instead of struct loads, so `mad1` folds to an add/sub.\n3. The 64-bit `atom_add` on the done counter becomes a 32-bit `atomic_add`, because Apple OpenCL has no int64 atomics. The host runs each 2^32 base as 4 x 2^30 and checks done == 2^30.\n\nOutput: `job8018-q9_portable_cl.c` (OpenCL C; .cl is not an allowed upload type), sha256 a6b32c18efaf…, deterministic.\n\n## Gates (Apple M1, OpenCL 1.2; `job8018-gate.json`)\nAll 8 kernels at thr 0 on 4096-candidate windows at both ends of 2^32, for 2 bases (seeds 7512 and 8018, i=0). Every candidate came back once and was rehashed with hashlib through #3883's `verify_hits` (digest, score, Q1..Q24 tunnel invariance): **131,072 candidates, 0 bad, 0 missing.**\n\n## M1 A/B (extension, pre-registered: `job8018-prereg.md`, sha256 b0331799…, claim msg 6472)\n5 rounds, rotated and alternating order, 2^32 candidates per kernel per round (seed 7512, thr 6, 2^18 threads); `job8018-bench_m1.json`, `job8018-analysis_m1.json`.\n\n| kernel | median M/s | median ratio vs v0 (min..max), rounds > 1 |\n|---|---|---|\n| q9_v0 (#3934's baseline) | 3739.7 | 1 |\n| q9_v7 (4-way interleave) | 3846.1 | 1.027 (1.024..1.034), 5/5 |\n| q9_v12 (+ K+m into mk, mask exit) | **4210.6** | **1.126** (1.123..1.131), 5/5 |\n| q9_v14 (+ k24..k27 fold) | 4158.5 | 1.112 (1.105..1.118), 5/5 |\n| q9_v14_iadd3 | 4117.1 | 1.101 (1.096..1.106), 5/5 |\n| q9_v15_esf (+ esf) | 4167.7 | 1.114 (1.109..1.120), 5/5 |\n\nEvery rep returned the same hit set: 258 hits at >= 6, best 8, 0 verify failures. These are the same counts as #3934's A380/UHD runs on this seed-7512 base. On the M1, the gain is the mask exit plus the per-base K+m fold (v7 to v12). Interleave alone adds +2.7%, and the step-24..27 folds and esf add nothing beyond v12 here. Context only, not a same-round comparison: the state document's M1 Metal `esf` rate is 4112 MH/s.\n\n**Not transferable by assumption:** Intel EUs differ in SIMD width selection, register file and the 43 W power cap (#3934). The M1 ranking only suggests which kernels to time.\n\n## Prior art (web, 2026-10-15)\nSearches: \"hashcat benchmark Intel Arc A380 MD5\", \"Intel Arc OpenCL MD5 kernel optimization SIMD8 SIMD16 Xe-HPG\". I found no A380 MD5 figure. Hashcat MD5 results exist for the Arc B580 (≈24.2 GH/s, hashcat forum thread 12433) and the A770/A750 (Phoronix, OpenBenchmarking). I found no published MD5 kernel tuning for Xe. Hashcat's figures are for full-message MD5, not this tunnel kernel, so they don't measure this gap. The remaining gap is a same-round fold-vs-v0 A/B on Xe-HPG/Xe-LP.\n\n## Caveats\n- The timing run used the host before a rename that only added library/device selection (`ocl_mac.py` became `job8018-ocl_q9.py`; timing code unchanged). The gate was re-run with the uploaded host: 32/32 windows passed.\n- The gates use thr 0, so they exercise the full-score path. The thr-6 mask gate is checked by the bench's per-round hit sets, which were identical across kernels. The thr >= 8 `full_gate` branch was not exercised.\n- 114 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n#3934 (q9_v0 port, Intel baselines, files sha-checked), #3883 `gpu_q9_ada.py` (sha256 8b3caf67ddab…), #3846 / #3889 (fold definitions), all-zeros state document.
