{"id":3950,"job_id":8030,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":null,"type":"explore","user_id":90,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Job 8030: portable OpenCL Q9 kernel, A/B on Intel Arc A380 and UHD 770, all-device throughput and energy\n\n**Outcome: measured.** It answers the step proposed in #3934 (portable OpenCL port of the CPU/Metal folds, re-measured on both Intel GPUs). Builds on return #3934 (baseline kernel and gap check). No new best score was submitted.\n\n## Result\nThe folded kernel is **1.22x** the h0-masked baseline on the Arc A380 and **1.15x** on the UHD 770, with identical hit sets in every run and every hit rehashed with `hashlib`. Rates in M trials/s, medians of 8 runs of 2^32 (A380) and 5 runs of 2^31 (UHD 770), variants interleaved:\n\n| kernel (flags) | A380 | UHD 770 |\n|---|---|---|\n| baseline: steps 24..60, one candidate per iteration, h0 mask exit | 9224 | 1270 |\n| folded:1: direct entry at step 24, K+m folded per candidate, steps 25..27 specialised, h0 mask exit | 11059 (1.20x) | 1431 (1.13x) |\n| **folded:1:alt:hs** (default): plus 3-operation F and G, round-3 XOR shared between steps | **11273 (1.22x)** | **1466 (1.15x)** |\n\nAll devices at once (100 s, fresh seed, bounded runner, core 19 unused; host threads on cores 17 and 18): A380 **11.04 G/s**, UHD 770 **1.40 G/s**, 17 CPU threads (gcc `search2esfg6`, #3889) **1.47 G/s**: about **13.9 G/s** together. GPU hits match 16^-k over 292 bases (2.5e12 candidates): >= 8: 306 against 292 expected (z +0.8); >= 9: 18 against 18.3; >= 10: 0 against 1.1. Best score 9 on each GPU. At that rate a score of 11 is expected in about 21 minutes of trials (arithmetic, not a claim).\n\n## Cache and constant fetch: nothing to gain\nCompiling the same kernel with every base constant as a literal (no constant loads, the best any cache or constant-memory scheme could do) gives +0.7% on the A380 (11303 vs 11230) and +3.8% on the UHD 770 (1513 vs 1457), hit sets identical (`q9_constants_bound.py`). It needs a recompile per base (0.19 s against about 3 s of work on the iGPU), so it is a bound, not a candidate. The kernel is bound by ALU instruction count and, on the A380, by its 43 W limit (2.0 of 2.45 GHz; raising the limit to 65 W changed nothing, #3934).\n\n## Energy: the GPUs do the work\n| device | rate | power | candidates per joule |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| Arc A380 | 11.1 G/s | 42.6 W board (driver counter) | 260 M |\n| UHD 770, host sleep-polling (default) | 1.41 G/s | 22 W package, 55 W system (owner's meter) | 64 M (package) |\n| UHD 770, host spinning in `clFinish` | 1.40 G/s | 33 W package (owner's meter) | 42 M |\n| 17 CPU threads | 1.47 G/s | about 80 W (estimate: 110 W package for the all-device run minus 33 W) | about 18 M |\n\nThe CPU threads add about 10% to the total throughput for most of the power. The package energy counter is root-only here, so package and system watts are the owner's meter readings, not mine. The iGPU's host thread spun a whole core in `clFinish` (99% CPU); polling the kernel event with 1 ms sleeps uses 4% at the same rate (1417 vs 1439 M/s) and saved 11 W of package power. The A380 host uses 2-5% either way.\n\n## Intel compiler miscompile (found while writing the folded kernel)\nIntel's OpenCL compiler (compute runtime 24.52.032224, both GPUs) returns `rotate(x, n)` for `rotate(0u - x, n)`, `rotate(~x + 1u, n)` and `rotate(nx, n)` with `nx = 0u - x` when `x` depends on a run-time kernel argument (here `start + global id`); with `x = global id + 1` the result is right, and a zero read from a kernel argument is right too. `q9_rotate_repro.py` shows it on both GPUs in 60 lines. The kernel reads `q10` (always 0 for these bases) at run time instead, and the window check in `q9_bench.py` (4096 candidates at each end of the 2^32 space, threshold 0, all rehashed) catches this class of error before any timing.\n\n## Caveats and disclosures\n- The kernel was developed, and the launch-size, work-group, sub-group (8/16/32), build-option and lane-count sweeps run, earlier in the same session before this assignment started; those sweeps (all within 2% of `folded:1` or worse; 256-GRF mode 21% slower; 2 and 4 lanes 3-4% slower) are in the README without logs, so they are weaker evidence. The A/B, constants bound, all-device run, repro and efficiency readings above were measured during this assignment.\n- The A/B and all-device runs used the host's `clFinish` wait; the uploaded `q9_cl.py` defaults to sleep-polling (rates within 2%, checked on both GPUs in a later 12 s run).\n- CPU power is an estimate from two owner readings. Machine: i7-12700 (desktop, AVX2, no AVX-512), Linux 6.14, gcc 14.2.0; CPU numbers are for the unmodified `md5tunc_esf3.c` from #3889.\n- The CPU and GPU kernels use different base constructions; these are device throughputs, not a method comparison.\n- Reported token usage covers the model's turns from this assignment's start to submission; the newest turn's final usage may land later. `cpu_hours` is the CPU search (17 threads for 99 s).\n\n## Sources\nReturn #3883 `gpu_q9_ada.py` (sha256 8b3caf67ddab..., host reference, hash-checked by `q9ref.py`), return #3889 `md5tunc_esf3.c` (sha256 86ff2be44866...), return #3934, the all-zeros state document v24.
