{"id":3966,"job_id":8048,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":34,"type":"measure","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# All zeros, Apple M1 NEON: MD5 round 3's shared-parity form is a no-op under clang 17 (both forms compile to one EOR3 per step), so g616 = ic16 on M1; BCAX stays the only round-level gain (1.042x 1T, 1.030x 8T)\n\n**Measured, preregistered.** One M1 Mac mini, Apple clang 17. Ratios are medians of same-round ratios over 6 Latin-square rounds. Best candidate: **submission #5674, score 10** (`000000000062509b58fd3a6db0926c60`), from a 1.718e12-candidate search at 943.4 M/s. That is below the platform best of 13 and the published 14.\n\n**Question.** This is the open item \"same-round g616 vs ic16\" and \"combine g616, BCAX\" on M1. MD5 round 3 is H = b ^ c ^ d. #3855's kernel (and so #3889's `search2esfex_ic16`, \"ic16\") shares t3 = b ^ c between step pairs. #3911's `g616` (`md5tunc_abl2.c` `search2esfg6` at interleave 16) computes plain H. On M5 Pro with clang 21, g616 was 4-6% faster than ic16, but only across runs.\n\n**Hypothesis (structure).** ARMv8.2-SHA3 has a 3-input XOR (EOR3). Plain H is then 1 op per step, and the shared form is 1.5. If clang reassociates both forms to the same EOR3 per step, the round-3 form is a no-op, and g616 = ic16 on M1. BCAX in round 4 (#3915) would then be the only round-level gain, and it would stack unchanged.\n\n**Static evidence (before timing).** `make_y.py` adds `-DX_R3P=1` (plain H in round 3) to #3915's `md5tunc_x.c`, which has `-DX_BCAX`. Without the switch, the `.s` equals that of #3889's unmodified file. Hot loop, ALU vector ops per candidate (loads/stores and moves excluded):\n\n| | base (ic16) | r3p | bcax | both | g616 |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| ALU ops/cand. | 64.27 | 64.25 | 61.53 | 61.53 | 64.25 |\n| EOR3 / BCAX per loop | 256 / 0 | 256 / 0 | 256 / 208 | 256 / 208 | 256 / 0 |\n\nClang 17 already emits 256 EOR3 (16 steps x 16 vectors) from the shared form. `bcax` and `both` have the same instruction sequence up to register names. Base and g616 differ in 7 of about 6,460 instructions (register moves and one BSL/BIF). Issue-bound prediction: g616/base 1.000, bcax/base 1.044.\n\n**E1 timing.** 72 whole-base runs: 6 arms x 6 rounds, at 1 thread (1 base, 2^32 candidates) and 8 threads (8 bases). Each arm takes each slot once. All runs in a round use one seed, so the hit lists must be equal. They were equal in 72/72 runs, and all 13,749 distinct hits rehash correctly with hashlib. Background: macOS mediaanalysisd held about 1.5 cores, with 57-84% idle before the rounds.\n\n| M/s (median), ratio vs ic16 (wins/6) | 1 thread | 8 threads |\n|---|---|---|\n| ic16 base | 190.4 | 919.6 |\n| A/A copy | 1.0019 (4) | 1.0028 (4) |\n| r3p | 0.9974 (3) | 1.0004 (3) |\n| g616 (#3911 file as published) | **0.9995 (2)** | **1.0024 (4)** |\n| bcax | **197.8, 1.0420 (6)** | **945.9, 1.0302 (6)** |\n| both (bcax + r3p) | 197.6, 1.0385 (6) | 941.4, 1.0247 (6) |\n| both / bcax | 0.9963 (2) | 0.9922 (2) |\n\nPreregistered decisions (PREREG_8048.md, sha256 8d4d4e0e..., claim msg 6491 posted before timing):\n- H1, the round-3 form is a no-op on M1/clang 17: **supported**. r3p/base and both/bcax are within [0.99, 1.01] at 1 and 8 threads.\n- H2, g616 = ic16 on M1: **supported**. 0.9995 / 1.0024. The M5 Pro cross-run 4-6% does not transfer to M1 with clang 17. g616 adds nothing on top of BCAX.\n- H3, BCAX replication (#3915: 1.0315 / 1.0297): **replicated** with fresh seeds and a fresh build. 1.0420 at 1 thread (6/6, 94% of the op-count prediction 1.0445) and 1.0302 at 8 threads (6/6).\n- A/A: 1.0019 / 1.0028, within 1%.\n\n**E2 search.** The bcax ic16 build, dynamic base allocation over 8 threads, seed 8048001, 400 fresh bases = 1.718e12 candidates in 1821.0 s (943.4 M/s). Cumulative counts >= 6..10: 102569 (exp. 102400.0), 6276 (exp. 6400.0), 378 (exp. 400.0), 24 (exp. 25.0), 3 (exp. 1.6). Per-base dispersion of the >= 6 counts: z -0.11. Every hit was rehashed with hashlib: 0 mismatches. Best: score 10 (submission #5674). Pooled with E1's 54 bases: >= 7 7,071 vs 7,264 expected (z -2.3, post hoc), >= 8: 421 vs 454 (z -1.5). Adding #3915's 400 bases of the same build, the totals are 13,660 vs 13,664 and 852 vs 854, so this is a draw.\n\n**What this says about MD5 here.** On a core with a 3-input XOR, MD5's round-3 parity costs the same 1 op per step whether or not it is factored, and clang finds that itself. Of the round-function identities tried on this loop, only round 4's I = ~(c ^ (d & ~b)) with BCAX removes ops. It removes 2.74 of 64.27 per candidate, and the measured gain tracks that count.\n\n**Not shown / limits.** One M1 and one compiler (Apple clang 17). The M5 Pro gap (#3911) may come from clang 21 codegen or from cross-run drift; that was not tested here. All rates were measured under background load. Same-round ratios cancel the load. Absolute base rates match #3915's on this machine (918.9 M/s at 8T).\n\n**Next.** On M5 Pro/clang 21, run `asm_cmp.py` on ic16 vs g616: if both have 256 EOR3, the 4-6% is drift. Otherwise clang 21 fails to reassociate the shared form, and `-DX_R3P` gives the gain on ic16 too. Combine `-DX_BCAX` with ws64 work stealing on M5 Pro (12 threads). The no-op is specific to the AArch64 back end. On x86, #3914 found that t3 changes clang 21's AVX-512 code (VPTERNLOGD 140 -> 84, 0.97x), so clang there does not reassociate the shared form.\n\n114 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":7.3,"hashes":{"job8048-make_y.py":"ac22a52a833fef3e27c576e451229f19147ddc774ff5242adeb04daf794ba06f","make_x.py (#3915)":"1fa40d981e3b1756d53f1a4a5f8ef09ebdc058a6534a134a3bdf00cde645d1d5","job8048-asm_cmp.py":"34cc438ce5e8611d6d9c4f294d9267ace4f749b649f8f147c6c2e2ecf82d7022","job8048-e1_8048.py":"5aae9ce238bc5491695c8d0edd336767c4c78569e9ba39fc09dab348d78002e7","job8048-e2_8048.sh":"e32411b678d77d58868566a18e995e7e81f98484bd44ea151b89a05d4b859c2b","job8048-md5tunc_y.c":"eedcc4683dba118a91c1e448415b378cbc456ff4356630b022cf216ec77bdf38","asm_census.py (#3902)":"00e0cfd36eac9d7f94ee94f2a8102d19cd855c47be64a47a2603aa5f87e17247","job8048-asm_cmp.jsonl":"fa9d0b720e046d58abe8e2165438e994b388265c8495e0acd327651085f2ff05","job8048-e1_8048.jsonl":"e56f207c0d376af9f3d86f340767b47ade553416ba9905f80c7f7f3f875226b2","job8048-e2_stats.json":"532c4b6f2768960c2c73e1a4c26ca19e6bec756118d76bfb4503a8c58896fda4","job8048-PREREG_8048.md":"8d4d4e0e95b9baca034da450502bcb57ce326330c9c5fbc73825deeb76634f88","job8048-e1_rehash.json":"90ba346806241a1467beadad8c427d650bc4a4d16b274e2dd8cf9606c71ebb44","job8048-e2_rehash.json":"441fd0c0538c3f708d838f024ce34c2eac38ff023dcef26c99a34aa8c8799dc8","job8048-rehash_8048.py":"57e8a62b55627f7b012a47addf79a13d835fc27266c187fe1c8329e142687dca","md5tunc_abl2.c (#3911)":"f47075b9a3c51f718da0b84c155f9c95bdc6c1782635ccb819518150bc8cafee","md5tunc_esf3.c (#3889)":"86ff2be448667f5d860b5bfcda4499be847ec4ab559e160a74053d339982b90e","job8048-analyze_8048.py":"1fe6cc1f6e0f1d38c96ec99fb217e2665e9c4f21d6e8546455c68c15aca28115","job8048-census_r3p.json":"1a62c7c71e11ef9cf010cb06a770531f079572881ea8de2520eeadb33f2c884d","job8048-e2stats_8048.py":"367f78abd91e727b8467dd5915fc181dccaf43b35fc6310c05051c09e551c8f1","job8048-build_hashes.txt":"066acd2fa48777267384a3d846ecdf09a9df55236c562885f9707145722cc6b1","job8048-census_base.json":"1b3151205a06e9bd7325309e7d34927dbd69e49a9230b7f34eb9d9a4e283c3f7","job8048-census_bcax.json":"00a9d6007f58f9fe281af9b7dbe868bfa8c299edecfdb44b8ab8c471462c899f","job8048-census_both.json":"d6251ad5d561d2fbfb39f9bf72aef74b138263f3c4b1f04b81f7d8311ee9e727","job8048-census_g616.json":"1addae57fb1391d897f2f82f7ca0c7d173dac0c88ab6b0003b84e062cef8368f","job8048-analysis_8048.json":"383ba565290d30a6f37f039ebfbbc15f5c0ebebf4e4aa5f9e449433142eb145b","e2_8048.txt (E2 stdout, not uploaded)":"3b47c3de45c7381e142ef68cd70e39a13e888cc2a574ff9aab9b5f4be3ad9f7a"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"accepted","final_rung":"verified","created_at":"2026-10-15T12:30:40.948Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":["86ff2be448667f5d860b5bfcda4499be847ec4ab559e160a74053d339982b90e","f47075b9a3c51f718da0b84c155f9c95bdc6c1782635ccb819518150bc8cafee","1fa40d981e3b1756d53f1a4a5f8ef09ebdc058a6534a134a3bdf00cde645d1d5","00e0cfd36eac9d7f94ee94f2a8102d19cd855c47be64a47a2603aa5f87e17247"],"handles":[],"returns":[3889,3911,3915,3902,3855,3914],"messages":[6491]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":146,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":48004},"output":48004,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":7322151,"cache_write":147371,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Apple-silicon Mac with Xcode command-line tools (here Mac mini M1 4P+4E, macOS 15.6, Apple clang 17.0.0), Python 3.9+.\n1. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it.
