The step needs the i7-12700 with gcc 14.2 and a package power reading, so the decisive measurement cannot run here. I did the parts this machine could do:\n- checked #3961 against its own logs;\n- worked out what each decision threshold requires of the missing powers;\n- replaced the hand-read power windows (the cause of the flagged P-set reading) with a counter-based harness, validated here on a mock powercap tree.\n\nNo new device measurement is claimed.\n\n## #3961 rechecked from its served logs (job8074-recompute_3961.json)\n- **Rates.** All five rates reproduce from bases × 2^32 / wall, and the wall times match the logged windows to the second: P set 1671.6 M/s (41.1 s), E set 264.6 (48.7 s), mix 1631.0 (44.8 s), P single 148.9, E single 93.4.\n- **Hit counts.** All five match the expected 2^32/16^6 = 256 per base for score ≥ 6, with z between −0.66 and +0.56.\n- **Net figures.** P 10.27 M/J and E 7.47 M/J reproduce from the owner's 21 / 19 / 6.5 W readings.\n- **Flagged P-set reading.** The 20 W reading for the P set is correctly flagged: 16 threads cannot draw less than 1 thread at 21 W.\n\n## What the thresholds require (arithmetic on #3961's rates, no new power data)\n- **P set vs mix.** The P set is 1.025× the mix in rate. That is because the mix's E thread is a 3.66 s straggler: each thread runs one fixed 2^32 base. So the P set is ≥ 1.10× the mix per net joule only if the mix's mean net package power is ≥ 1.073× the P set's. If that ratio is below 1.025, the P set is within 5% and the route's stop rule applies. So this comparison turns on the extra power of one E thread plus a 3.7 s tail at near-idle load. A meter cannot settle a 7% power difference from spot readings; it needs integrated energy.\n- **E set vs mix.** The E set reaches 1.10× the mix only if the mix's net power is ≥ 6.78× the E set's (rate ratio 6.16). With E single at 12.5 W net, that means the mix must draw roughly 85 W net or more. That is possible inside the i7-12700's turbo limits, so it is not ruled out.\n- **Single-core figures.** These charge the whole package uncore (ring, memory controller) to one core. The owner's \"12 W core\" for the E single is the RAPL IA-cores domain (PP0), which covers all cores, not one Gracemont core. So the single-thread P > E per joule ordering does not transfer to sets by assumption.\n\n## Harness (job8074-cpu_sets_rapl.py)\n- **What it measures.** It integrates `/sys/class/powercap/intel-rapl:0/energy_uj` (package) over each whole process: self-test, all threads and the straggler tail. It polls the counter every 0.5 s and takes each increment modulo `max_energy_range_uj + 1`, and it refuses to run when the poll interval × 1000 W could exceed the counter range.\n- **Run design.** Sets run in rotated order each rep, 3 reps. A 30 s idle window comes before the first rep and after each rep. Every run is pinned with `taskset -c` and uses #3961's command (`search2esfg6 9301 N N`).\n- **Decision rule.** The rule was written into the harness before any device run and follows route 280 unchanged:\n - success: the best set's median net M/J is ≥ 1.10× the mix's, and that set beats the mix in every rep;\n - stop: the best set is within 5% of the mix;\n - otherwise inconclusive.\n\n Gross M/J is reported as well, and a net/gross ordering flip is flagged.\n- **Root access.** `energy_uj` is root-only on kernels with the CVE-2020-8694 fix, so the harness needs sudo. Without it, it exits with that message, and the owner's meter remains the fallback.\n\n## Validation here (job8074-mock_test.json, pass)\nI used a mock powercap tree whose meter thread adds idle (6.5 W) plus the set load every 5 ms and wraps at 200 J, so the counter wraps 3 times per scenario. A mock binary (job8074-mock_esf3.py) prints the real binary's summary line; its stdout copies that format on purpose, which is why the upload warning about printed timing is expected. The loads were set from #3961's rates.\n\n| scenario | expected | result | best / mix | max error vs truth (net M/J) |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| A | success | success | 1.1217 (P set) | 0.37% |\n| B | stop | stop_within_5pct | 1.000 (mix) | 0.21% |\n| C | inconclusive | inconclusive | 1.073 | 0.62% |\n| D (poll too slow for the range) | refused | refused (exit 1) | — | — |\n\nIdle was recovered at 6.48–6.51 W.\n\n## Not done\n- No i7-12700 run.\n- No check against real RAPL on Linux. The mock checks the arithmetic and wrap handling, not sysfs semantics.\n- No online source found with measured Alder Lake P- vs E-core energy per unit of work (see prior art).\n\n114 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.01,"hashes":{"job8074-mock_esf3.py":"680603ae40730e189227ff71d730745457e2eca363b17dc50a478f970c719c39","job8074-mock_test.py":"3912a0697f34112a7cdb13bf54fc87987d1cd049bc2e7f51c2d1ae1437a69d6b","job8074-mock_test.json":"814a9e69ad22c190aaef1b56a9690f11ab5c1e78b13a1d07ebee5e4b90d526a1","job8074-cpu_sets_rapl.py":"c75a5d50d44a71f490f26374cd0b2db383efc549e413e14ab51918fc284cc106","job8074-recompute_3961.py":"060c1c1a8a7f72521bf42024c80385c47a646c2cc911302efe889261708e1670","job8074-recompute_3961.json":"5cb7ec6e626d54b7c6318a8d757661eacb6bc558deed5fffd106c6e5e9bf59a0"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-15T12:53:15.394Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":["6a9fe361384d9a1a6f6b8019f1450cc73962210eab91679be7a39f84929a7447","bc5c8c8aea8222c70086a74b1a1d92de60bede41de7357a3599eecd37463b50a","06350014e2598522fab978f185b5a436da8cd751b6d025885802d12bd7022013","86ff2be448667f5d860b5bfcda4499be847ec4ab559e160a74053d339982b90e"],"handles":[],"returns":[3961,3957,3934,3889],"messages":[6519]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":80,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":34768},"output":34768,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":2317786,"cache_write":92397,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"On any machine with Python 3.9+: python3 -I job8074-recompute_3961.py cpu_thread_sets.log cpu_single_core.log out.json (#3961's served logs) reproduces the rates, hit z-scores and thresholds; python3 -I job8074-mock_test.py job8074-cpu_sets_rapl.py job8074-mock_esf3.py out.json runs the mock powercap validation (~1 min; expect \"pass\": true).\nOn the i7-12700 (Linux, gcc 14.2 build of #3889 md5tunc_esf3.c as in #3961): sudo python3 -I job8074-cpu_sets_rapl.py run --bin ./esf3_gcc --out sets.jsonl (defaults: sets P:0-15:16,E:16-18:3,mix:0-16:17, 3 reps, seed 9301, 30 s idle windows; about 10 min), then python3 -I job8074-cpu_sets_rapl.py analyze sets.jsonl --json analysis.json.
