Submitted as #6464: verified by the server (openssl and\nrfc1321-ts-1), new site record 136 B (was 138 B, #1738). A new exact kernel (`d4f`) then made the d4 stage 3.5x faster and found a\nsecond, different 136 B pair within 89 s. Proposed next: the 134 B (d3) search, whose cost is now the block-1 generator.\n\n## 1. Round-4 survival check (pre-registered in `prereg.md`, before the main search)\n`d45_search.py --records` logs every step-32 record; `depth.py` recomputes each one in Python from the trail definition and\ncounts survivors before each round-4 step 48..63. 2,961 IHVs, 11,810 step-32 records: 0 kind mismatches, pass rate 0.46-0.56\nper step (model 1/2); pooled with the main run (44,443 records, `depth_all.json`) the rate stays about 1/2 per step. The\nlambda = s32 x 2^-16 model of #3504 holds, so the search ran as planned.\n\n## 2. Main search (`main_progress.jsonl`)\nSeeds 12000000 + batch (disjoint from #3504, #4000 and #4015), GPU block-1 generator `gen_cl` and kernel `d4m` both on the A380,\n16 producers on CPUs 0-15. Stopped at the first verified pair after 746.1 s: 8,165 IHVs, 1,075,451,568 legal candidates, 32,633\nstep-32 records (lambda 0.498), one full-trail record, no failed recheck; 10.9 IHV/s, A380 kernel time 681.2 s.\n\n**Pair 1** (IHV 5fbc2549 6abb75f0 3b940b5c 4212e0f4, x = 1455458218): members differ only in byte 21 (block-1 word 5, bit 10), MD5 a99e75ec2d2f72aade497429f05c0d82 for both\n(hashlib and md5sum).\n- a: `52a6a427d2d6daf05f605936a9c7ba49d5212232031a9db847b254ab9cb5c3fe7fef68bd69740c01968122d2e3952ad656780e39e47300a0767dbab0b7ada1ca0ebf2014`\n- b: `52a6a427d2d6daf05f605936a9c7ba49d5212232031e9db847b254ab9cb5c3fe7fef68bd69740c01968122d2e3952ad656780e39e47300a0767dbab0b7ada1ca0ebf2014`\n\n## 3. d4f kernel (`d4f_kernel.cl.txt`, `d4f_cl.py`, `d4opt_README.md`)\nExact like d4m (visits only candidates whose Q2, and for k <= 6 also Q3, already satisfy MSB = beta), with round 1 and the tail\nas straight-line code with literal constants instead of a per-step state machine with table lookups; a Q3 interval path for\nk <= 6 (72 % of real IHVs; k = differing bits 20..30 of IHV words b and c), the Q2 path otherwise. Portable OpenCL C 1.2.\n- Validation: on 8 whole IHVs (k = 3..9, including the pair-1 IHV and the test IHV of #3504) the record sets (every legal x with\n  its kind) equal the scalar reference `d45_ref.c` and d4m, on both GPUs and both paths, check counter 0; rechecked on 2 more fresh\n  IHVs (k = 7, 8) on the A380. Pair 1's full-trail record is reproduced (x = 1455458218, two-compression recheck true).\n- Speed, seconds per whole IHV (d4m and d4f alternated on the same IHVs): A380 0.0919 -> 0.0238 (3.86x, 12 IHVs mostly k <= 6),\n  0.0814 -> 0.0326 (2.50x, 10 IHVs with k = 7, 8); UHD 770 4.28x and 2.57x. Weighted by the k distribution of 7,677 real IHVs:\n  A380 0.089 -> 0.025 s (3.5x), UHD 770 0.59 -> 0.155 s (3.8x). Phase 1 of the Q3 path costs 85-110 ps per (lo, class) pair,\n  which sets the k <= 6 cut-off; the rest is mostly SIMD divergence (each 16-lane group waits for its slowest candidate).\n  Measured and not kept: more classes per item, work-groups of 64/256, a local survivor queue, an Intel sub-group-32 variant.\n\n## 4. End-to-end with d4f (`d4f_e2e_progress.jsonl`, `d4f_e2e2_progress.jsonl`, seeds 13000000+ and 13100000+)\n- Run 1 stopped at a verified pair after 89 s: 1,013 IHVs, 4,171 step-32 (lambda 0.064).\n  **Pair 2** (IHV e9c2b6cf 736f71b4 3f1d4272 69389598, x = 1580963624), MD5 527f4cdbf3dbd54f9e43e8d37a637183 for both, again byte 21: a `cf79980a53fb49306fe92db7962c2d68f89792dd4174365a1016173999edd082bb8555cf148cc4106cf0297b5d215692f5fff2796583021273ccf03a13eb4ec6cb788aed`, b `cf79980a53fb49306fe92db7962c2d68f89792dd4178365a1016173999edd082bb8555cf148cc4106cf0297b5d215692f5fff2796583021273ccf03a13eb4ec6cb788aed`.\n  Not submitted to the challenge: it ties the record of pair 1.\n- Run 2, 361 s: 9,643 IHVs, 38,437 step-32 (lambda 0.587), none full. 26.7 IHV/s over the run and 36.7 IHV/s while the queue held\n  IHVs (d4m: 10.9 IHV/s), A380 0.027 s per IHV beside the generator. The generator delivers about 9,600 IHVs per 60 s batch but\n  refills only below 200 queued IHVs, so the GPU now waits during each batch (a larger low-water mark would remove that).\n- Over this job: 87,051 step-32 records, sum of lambda 1.33, 2 full trails found (Poisson P(>= 2) = 0.38).\n\n## 5. Next step\nd4 needs nothing more for the record. The 134 B (d3) search (`d3cl/`, #4015: 624,709 IHVs in 1.4 h, lambda 0.151, no pair) took\n8.1 ms of wall time per IHV, of which the A380 kernel used only 1.1 ms (GPU busy 14 %), so block-1 generation sets its rate:\nabout 0.11 expected 134 B pairs per hour on this machine, about 9 h per pair. Proposed: profile and speed up `gen_cl` with the\nmethods that worked here, then run d3 windows.\n\n## Accounting\n- CPU, measured by the logger (`cpu_accounting.sh`, process plus waited children): depth check 176.3 s, main 185.0 s, end-to-end\n  runs 173.9 s and 181.4 s: 716.6 s = 0.20 h (`cpu_hours`). Not measured: the kernel subagents' runs (their estimate about 1,600 s,\n  mostly the scalar reference on 8 cores) and my 2 validation reruns (about 170 s); so `cpu_hours` is a lower bound.\n- GPU kernel time (final-block kernel, logged): A380 244.3 + 681.2 + 27.6 + 262.0 = 1,215 s. Not logged: generator kernels, and\n  the subagents' tests (about 2 min on each GPU, their estimate).\n- Tokens: harness records (`sahtool usage`) of this assignment's session window and its two kernel subagents, all\n  claude-opus-5-5. The subagent logs keep mostly the usage written when a reply starts, so their output counts are low; they are\n  sent as recorded, not corrected.\n- Hardware: i7-12700 (CPUs 0-15 producers, 16 host, others free), Arc A380 (power-limited, about 43 W), UHD 770, Linux 6.14,\n  Intel compute runtime 24.52.\n\n## Sources\nReturns #3504 (method, trail, `dbb_block1_7181.c`, Metal kernel), #3967 (OpenCL port), #4000 (d4 null result, `gen_cl`, `d4m`),\n#4015 (d3 window); HashClash `path2.txt` (Marc Stevens, MIT licence), unmodified.
