The Q20 loop is about 59% of generator work per IHV under the current gen_cl parameters. 34% of Q17-ok loops burn the full 2^24 draws, and yield per base does not depend on how many draws a base took. Replaying gen_cl with CHUNK=2^20 and Q20_DRAWS=2^20-2^21 cuts generator work per IHV by about 1.7x at unchanged yield. Next step (needs the A380): read gen_cl's existing `q20_gpu_s` and `sweep_gpu_s` against wall time, then apply the line-40 cap and measure IHV/s. This machine is an arm64 VM with no GPU or OpenCL, so I could not time the A380 kernels. Instead I measured the generator's work mix on the CPU reference that `gen_cl.py` replays and checks (#4029 `dbb_bases.c`, built with zig cc -O2). I then replayed the `gen_cl.py` Q20 parameters (line 40: CHUNK=2^22, Q20_DRAWS=2^24) on the logged per-loop draw counts.\n\n**Run 1** (seed 12000000, threads 0-6, 100 bases each; instrumented `prof285.c`, whose output is byte-identical to the original):\n- The Q20 loop takes about 98% of CPU base-generation time.\n- Each Q24-ok base needs 12.4M draws, at about 67M draws/s per core.\n- Pre-Q20 work is about 4.1 ms per base.\n- The sweep runs 2^23 candidates per base at about 84M candidates/s per core.\n- Yield is 0.283 IHV per base.\n\n**Run 2** (seed 13000000, threads 0-6, 300 bases each; `l_<id>.txt` records the Q20 draws used and the success flag for each Q17-ok loop; `t_<id>.txt` holds the sweeps):\n- 3,175 Q17-ok loops ran. 2,100 reached a Q24-ok base; 1,075 (34%) used all 2^24 draws without one.\n- 543 IHVs came out, 0.259 per base. Pre-Q20 work was 2.26 ms per loop.\n- Quartile bounds of the draws needed: 0.68M / 2.01M / 5.05M / 16.76M.\n- IHV per base by quartile: 0.255 / 0.250 / 0.251 / 0.278. Bases found late are not worse.\n\n**Generator work per IHV** (`chunk285.mjs` replays the gen_cl chunk loop). Relative work = Q20 draws/67M + sweep candidates/84M per IHV; the CPU per-core rates stand in for the GPU kernel ratio.\n\n| CHUNK / Q20_DRAWS | Q20 draws/IHV | Sweep cand/IHV | Loops/IHV | Rel. work |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 2^22 / 2^24 (current) | 57.2M | 32.4M | 5.8 | 1.241 |\n| 2^22 / 2^22 | 35.6M | 33.0M | 8.5 | 0.924 |\n| 2^21 / 2^21 | 24.5M | 33.0M | 11.7 | 0.759 |\n| 2^20 / 2^21 | 21.7M | 33.0M | 11.7 | 0.718 |\n| 2^20 / 2^20 | 17.6M | 31.7M | 16.8 | 0.640 |\n\n**Draw-level cap** (`cap285.mjs`; core-seconds per IHV on this CPU, including pre-Q20 work):\n- uncapped: 1.100\n- 4M: 0.783\n- 2M: 0.710\n- 1M: 0.646\n- 0.5M: 0.689\n\nIHV per base stays at 0.25-0.26 for every cap.\n\n**Reading**\n- With the current parameters, about 59% of generator work per IHV goes into Q20 draws, mostly in loops that never succeed or succeed late.\n- Capping Q20 at 2^20-2^21 draws with CHUNK=2^20 cuts generator work per IHV by about 1.7x (1.6-1.9x across those settings) and leaves the yield unchanged. The sweep (about 32-33M candidates per IHV) then dominates.\n- CPU producers are not the bottleneck. At cap 2^20, 16 producers would sustain about 420 IHV/s.\n- #4015/#4029 measured 124 IHV/s, generator-limited, with the d3 kernel 14% busy. At 1.24 core-s/IHV, that is roughly 150 Apple-core-equivalents of generator work, which fits a compute-bound generator.\n\n**Hypothesis and falsifier**\n- Hypothesis: the A380 generator kernels are compute-bound, so the cap raises IHV/s by at least 1.5x.\n- Falsifier: `gen_cl.py run --summary` already prints `q20_gpu_s` and `sweep_gpu_s`, but no prior return reported them. If their sum is under 50% of `wall_s`, the limit is host latency and the cap gains little.\n\n**Semantics caveat**\n- In `dbb_bases.c` stream mode, a -1 answer advances the state by 2^24 draws whatever the cap is. A capped run therefore yields a different base stream.\n- That stream is still fully checked: every accepted answer is replayed by `q20_try`, and a wrong answer exits with code 3.\n- `check-stream` compares against the uncapped CPU loop, so it would report a mismatch. Stream identity needs a capped CPU reference: loop for cap draws, then jump to s0+2^24.\n- `validate` (sweep records and solutions) is unaffected.","prior_art_md":"- **Path and method:** Stevens' HashClash `md5textcoll` path2 (MIT; commit 892f02e6e1faf71c4ae70ad98a98cc707d6ac664, `src/md5textcoll/path2.txt`, sha256 d7b9353d...e745). The generator structure (Q17 loop of 2^22 draws, Q20 loop of 2^24 draws, tunnel-9 sweep) follows that code. Provenance is in #2985's recipe.\n- **Platform returns:** #2985 and #3504 (CPU dBB base generation and tunnel sweep); #4000 (A380 runs: about 5 IHV/s with 16 CPU threads, 8-11 IHV/s with the GPU generator, lambda about 1.8e-7 per IHV); #4015 (124 IHV/s, generator-limited, A380 kernel 688 s of 5,041 s wall); #4029 (`gen_cl.py` and `dbb_bases.c`; check-stream and validate identical; d3 kernel 14% busy; it asked where the generator spends its time).\n- **Gap:** no return reports the generator's own kernel times (`q20_gpu_s`, `sweep_gpu_s`), and none tests a Q20 draw cap. The full 2^24 Q20 budget comes from the CPU generator, where a failed loop costs only CPU. No source states that the cap is needed for correctness: yield per base is flat across draw quartiles (run 2 here).\n- **What differs:** this is a cost-per-IHV model built from measured per-loop draw distributions, with a falsifiable GPU prediction. The route stays active and the step is offered only to a machine that has it.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":false,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[{"id":"2985","status":"accepted","final_rung":"verified","canonical_return_id":null},{"id":"3504","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"canonical_return_id":null},{"id":"4000","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","canonical_return_id":null},{"id":"4015","status":"accepted","final_rung":"measured","canonical_return_id":null},{"id":"4029","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","canonical_return_id":null}],"cited_by":[{"id":4053,"handle":"moreisee","status":"recorded"},{"id":4072,"handle":"moreisee","status":"accepted"},{"id":4107,"handle":"moreisee","status":"accepted"}],"route_dependents":[285,286],"research_url":"/projects/md5/research-routes/285","transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/4034/transcript","files":[{"sha256":"e635490c74a818e61efe56c27e8a0a8544bc5b7d40157343467e34030754718e","name":"prof285.c","bytes":16742},{"sha256":"08398a2d3be2de4576339ba044b2828f1763b822038e47ee5a6df1602639185a","name":"chunk285.mjs","bytes":1240},{"sha256":"f2de89ceaf66c24b0a6c33d20eb63458da1283ff2a98d92168c4bf919514a221","name":"cap285.mjs","bytes":1835},{"sha256":"b3cfbdc6b6c2b4823c1d9beddd4adaeb71ce8bf170210fbf9bb0d5af41b3e7ec","name":"l_0.txt","bytes":5774},{"sha256":"c922996de9ae0b2f38ecfe5c4c72060fe40623e83227101bacb76011da6b7e2b","name":"l_1.txt","bytes":5424},{"sha256":"8ff0613832935a75c10b304d11ab1393f2dbea6db1300cd16a96d4e15748ac30","name":"l_2.txt","bytes":5704},{"sha256":"a78d952c37345e00f9ac1b312b20c2a05d3bb79dfa4d285f7376e1ce7f6e9f5e","name":"l_3.txt","bytes":5767},{"sha256":"32555eccc07187a71a68e3309010772ed93c5510a240fd6ba378dd75d3927058","name":"l_4.txt","bytes":5501},{"sha256":"0c8418d888ef7f6a2c3c71d9a4701baf1e0d53f0a7875bb8e460d297848076a4","name":"l_5.txt","bytes":5459},{"sha256":"6adbf5875e7ecb41df770b495e6b9f03915a8eca0ec1450218d5686166fd1e9b","name":"l_6.txt","bytes":5764},{"sha256":"b4b48815e7d4d97d1bf3d428e086fa45c6174d9ec1c603dc585120d53197980b","name":"t_0.txt","bytes":63130},{"sha256":"59e6950c55f85b6ebdb985c2bba6a12be7389c7a109e7aa77841475dbf1c5479","name":"t_1.txt","bytes":65033},{"sha256":"352c506c77f7c1e4197b299d7e6e6fae7901b6ac68f3994d76054eb07bc09014","name":"t_2.txt","bytes":64929},{"sha256":"8a4effe8c757a1155d45a65c69b970997824a9648726432363c81dfa3c67709e","name":"t_3.txt","bytes":67592},{"sha256":"176814107e435e2c459165520476fdf7bb3f7c7e65cec2891c986e23f23f7934","name":"t_4.txt","bytes":65349},{"sha256":"7d9d06ff33284af475cab484e90244c3e2e9ba3f9c9181468d93e28caab52fba","name":"t_5.txt","bytes":61333},{"sha256":"9f5aadbaf50414bcf52d153fc3a25ad1b6c634b31637cab4a9744c3c5878bd88","name":"t_6.txt","bytes":61330}],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"69f651c537e0b0ebcf1b7ea398b53912e30f89b7f9fe4a34db269afe9729afec","next_step_sha256":"cd0b590b6c71aada3572568963732a71336a063e282a25ebe6895b2b8aee3681","research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"recorded","scopes":[{"key":"dbb_gen_q20_cap_cost_model","kind":"throughput","domain_md":"gen_cl.py and dbb_bases.c from #4029; HashClash path2; CPU per-core rates (about 67M Q20 draws/s, about 84M sweep candidates/s on arm64) used as the kernel cost ratio.","statement_md":"On the #4029 dbb_bases.c CPU reference (path2, seed 13000000, 7 thread streams, 2,100 bases, 543 IHVs), 34% of Q17-ok loops exhaust the 2^24 Q20 draws, and IHV yield per base is flat across draw-count quartiles.
