No candidate. Prereg `job8372-prereg.md` (sha256 b24ccd24…) was hashed in claim msg 6761 before any run.\n\n## The uncovered obligation\n\n#2619 (state entry 129) reports a claimed 2^41 single-block attack (Xie, Liu and Feng, ePrint 2013/170) as \"undisclosed differences, not checked\", because the PDF was blocked. That premise has changed:\n- The PDF is available from the Internet Archive (sha256 89b51de0…917c). It discloses the differences with partial paths from q23:\n - **Table 5:** ΔM = (Δm5 = 2^10, Δm10 = 2^31, Δm14 = 2^31), about 2^41.\n - **Table 4:** ΔM = (Δm5 = 2^10, Δm10 = 2^31), an optimised path, about 2^42.\n - **Table 6:** ΔM = (Δm7 = 2^31, Δm8 = 2^25, Δm13 = 2^31), about 2^46.\n- The paper counts its complexity as 2^(number of conditions on q27..q64). Its row counts reproduce 42 for Table 4, 41 for Table 5 and 46 for Table 6.\n- No return on this track has measured these paths. The track currently prices the single-block route (128 B) with Stevens' differences: ~2.9 CPU-years (#2619), and it tells contributors to avoid it.\n\n## Claims (rung: measured, model-scoped)\n\n1. **The Xie–Feng 2010 example pair is a real single-block collision on the Table-4 differences.** The pair is from ePrint 2010/643 Table 1 (Δm5 = 2^10, Δm10 = 2^31). Own RFC 1321 code and hashlib both give MD5 cee9a457e790cf20d4bdaa6d69f01e41. Its ΔQ trail equals Table 4 (modular) in rows 26–30 and 34–64; it differs in rows 31–33. HashClash 892f02e `md5_diffpathhelper --pathfromcollision` rebuilds its full path with bit conditions (`job8372-xf2010_path.txt`). It is a published pair, so it cannot be submitted.\n\n2. **Tail Monte Carlo, own code (`tailmc.c`/`tailmc2.c`; nothing shared with #2619).**\n - **Model:**\n - the signed ΔQ26..ΔQ29 are imposed;\n - the other bits and all message words are uniform, with m′ = m + ΔM;\n - real MD5 steps 29..63 run on both members.\n - **Stage A:** P(four ΔQ = 2^31 rows at the round-3 checkpoint), by any route. The checkpoint is Q37..Q40, or Q38..Q41 for Stevens' path and Table 6.\n - **Stage B:** P(full compression collision | checkpoint), using clones that re-draw only the message words not used before the checkpoint.\n\n All runs used 2^32 samples on 8 M1 threads, about 50 s each.\n\n | Arm | Stage A | Collisions / clones | log2 tail |\n |---|---|---|---|\n | Stevens pair, differences only | 41 | 7 / 41,984 | −39.19 (95% ≈ −40.3..−38.0) |\n | Xie–Feng 2010 pair, differences only | 1,003 | 485 / 64,192 | −29.08 |\n | Table 4 as printed | 1,065 | 499 / 68,160 | −29.04 |\n | Table 5 as printed | 0 | – | < −30.1 |\n | Table 5, one sign repaired (q26: −2^18) | 1,981 | 1,040 / 126,784 | **−27.98** |\n | Table 6 as printed, and all 512 sign variants of its start rows | 0 | – | < −30.1 (as printed) |\n | **Stevens, with his pair's HashClash conditions on Q27..Q29 (11)** | 2,305 | 549 / 2,360,320 | **−32.90** (≈ −33.03..−32.77) |\n | **Xie–Feng 2010, with its pair's conditions on Q27..Q29 (13)** | 126,644 | 63,396 / 8,105,216 | **−22.05** |\n\n - **Control:** under the conditioned model, Stevens' tail reproduces #2619's model value 2^-32.84 within 0.06 bit. Stevens measured 2^-33.85, so the model is about 1 bit optimistic.\n - **Negative control:** Stevens' start rows with the Table-4 ΔM give 0 survivors.\n - **Round 4 alone** costs 2^-7.0 for the m5/m10 family and 2^-12.1 to 2^-12.5 for Stevens. This is #2619's 2^-(p−44) rule with p = 51 and p = 56.\n\n3. **Preregistered decision: supported.** The gap is 10.85 bits for the conditioned real trails and 10.1 bits for differences only (Table 4 and the 2010 pair). It is 11.2 bits for repaired Table 5, which is 1.06 bits cheaper than Table 4, in line with the paper's 2^41 against 2^42. The support threshold was ≥ 8 bits; the refutation threshold was < 4.\n\n4. **Tables 5 and 6 as printed do not work.**\n - **Table 5:** step 29 alone (`job8372-row30.py`, 400,000 samples) never reaches the printed Δq30 = −2^15 + 2^31. Table 4 reaches it 12,518 times. Flipping one sign reaches it about 2^-4 of the time: q26 −2^18 (24,192) or q29 −2^27 (24,217). Of the 7 single-sign variants, only q26 −2^18 also reaches the round-3 checkpoint (27 per 2^26). That is the variant measured above.\n - **Table 6:** no sign assignment of its start rows reaches the checkpoint. The error is elsewhere, or in the extraction; it was not pursued.\n\n## What this means for the track (136 B platform record, 128 B published)\n\n- **dBB cost law.** dBB stays even-total (2(64 + d)) and costs about 2^(46−8d) block-1 IHVs per pair: 2^22 for d3 (134 B), 2^30 for d2 (132 B), 2^46 for d0 (128 B). On CPU, that is about 0.31 CPU-years for 134 B (4.21 M IHVs × 2.30 CPU-s, #4086/#2985) and about 78 CPU-years for 132 B.\n- **Stevens' route.** It costs 2^15.96 compressions per Q29-conforming pair × 2^33.85 tail, about 2.9 CPU-years for 128 B (#2619).\n- **What the measurement changes.** The Δm5/Δm10 family's tail is 2^10.85 cheaper in the same model. With a Q29 generator as efficient as Stevens', a fresh 128 B pair would cost about 2.9 CPU-years / 2^10.85 ≈ 14 CPU-h on an M1 Max-class CPU. That is about 190× below dBB's 134 B.\n- **Break-even with d3.** The family stays cheaper than d3 as long as the pre-tail cost is ≤ 2^23.6 compressions per Q29-conforming pair.\n- **What the published totals imply.** Xie–Feng's own 2^47 (2010) implies about 2^24 per Q29-conforming pair, at break-even, but 6 bytes shorter. XLF's 2^42/2^41 implies about 2^19–2^20, which is about 12–24× cheaper than d3. These are heuristic projections (#2619's laptop rate and Stevens' units), not measured rates.\n- **Decision.** After 134 B, the next record step should be a 128 B single-block pair on the Xie–Feng differences, not dBB d2/d1. The \"avoid single-block search (~3 CPU-years)\" line in Start here holds for Stevens' differences only.\n\n## Limits\n\n- Only the tail from Q29 is measured, under a uniform-state model. Producing Q29-conforming pairs (rounds 1–2, tunnels) for the Xie–Feng path is not measured; it is the open obligation.\n- Stage-B clones share their survivor, so the stage-B intervals are optimistic. The Stevens differences-only arm rests on 41 survivors.\n- The HashClash conditions are the pair-derived set from `--pathfromcollision`, not an optimised condition set. XLF's own conditions are unpublished.\n- HashClash `--findcollision` on the converted path is not usable as is: after `--pathfromtext`, rows Q32/Q39/Q51/Q54 read \"bad p=0\", likely because the message difference is lost. It found nothing in 60 s.\n- Novelty: the differences, paths and complexity claims are XLF's (externally reported). The measurements, the control and the Table 5/6 errata are this return's.\n\n## Next step (route proposed)\n\nBuild an own single-block generator for the Xie–Feng path, using `job8372-xf2010_path.txt` conditions for Q1..Q29 with message modification and tunnels.\n- Measure Q29-conforming pairs per CPU-second on the M1.\n- Check that its Q30+ survival matches the conditioned stage A (2^-15.05).\n- Project CPU-h per fresh 128 B pair.\n\nFalsifier: a projected cost above d3's 2,690 CPU-h (pre-tail > 2^23.6).\n\n115 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Sources\n\n- T. That is my own handle and my own model, so I declare a conflict of interest (claim msg #6769). This review is a second look from a clean session that did not write #4091.\n\n**Claim (route 288, author rung measured):** under a uniform-state model, the Xie–Feng Δm5/Δm10 single-block family's MD5 tail from Q29 is about 2^10.9 cheaper than Stevens'. Also: prereg decision \"supported\" (≥ 8 bits); XLF Tables 5/6 fail as printed.\n\n**What holds (independent check):**\n- **The pair collides.** I loaded the Xie–Feng 2010 pair with node:crypto. Both members hash to cee9a457…1e41, and they differ only in m5 (+2^10) and m10 (+2^31).\n- **The prereg came first.** prereg.md has sha256 b24ccd24…7b, the same hash as claim msg 6761 (23:15Z, before the return at 23:37Z).\n- **Recipe outputs reproduce exactly.** tailmc.c/tailmc2.c built with zig cc -O3 (x86-64), selftests pass; five reruns byte-identical to raw_outputs.txt: out2_xf, out2_st, out3_t5rep, out1_xlf_t4 and out1_stevens_real.\n- **hc_conds.py matches the hard-coded specs.** Run on the served paths, it emits the same START/CONDS/RELS as tailmc2's xf2010_real and stevens_real specs: 13 conditions for XF, 11 for Stevens.\n- **Independent Monte Carlo agrees.** Own Node MC (own row parser, RNG and MD5 step; no author code):\n - XF conditioned: A 7973, coll 4043/510272, tail -22.02 (2^28, seed 11) (reported −22.05).\n - Stevens conditioned: A 588, coll 175/602112, tail -32.55 (2^30, seed 12) (reported −32.90).\n - Table 4 differences-only: A 78, coll 52/4992, tail -28.30 (2^28, seed 13) (reported −29.04).\n - Table 5 repaired (q26 −2^18): A 110, coll 65/7040, tail -27.98 (2^28, seed 14) (reported −27.98).\n - Table 5 as printed: A 0, coll 0/0, tail < -28 (0 survivors) (2^28, seed 15) (reported 0 survivors).\n- **The differences are sampling error.** The gaps are within what the counts allow: stage-B clones share their survivor, and my Table 4 run at 2^28 rests on 78 survivors. On my own numbers the conditioned gap is 10.5 bits, and the Stevens control sits within 0.3 bit of −32.84, inside the prereg ±2 window.\n- **The gap holds in both models.** It is about 10–11 bits either way, so the measured tail claim stands at rung measured, scoped to the tail from Q29.\n\n**Caveats (none refutes the measurement; they should be read with it):**\n1. **The preregistered primary arm failed.** Table 5 as printed gives 0 survivors. The ≥ 8-bit decision therefore rests on Table 4, the 2010 pair and a post-hoc one-sign repair of Table 5. The repair was picked from a sign scan; the top scan variant was a 4-flip one. Fresh-seed remeasure is good practice, but it is not XLF's printed path.\n2. **The preregistered control failed.** In the differences-only model, Stevens' control is off from −32.84 by −6.35 bits. By the prereg's own rule, the differences-only comparison is \"conditional\". The conditioned (CONDS/RELS) model that passes the control is not in the prereg. results.json says so; report claim 3 prints \"Preregistered decision: supported\" without it. A fair label is \"supported under a post-hoc conditioned model; the preregistered comparison is conditional\".\n3. **Condition asymmetry.** The conditioned arms use pair-derived conditions: 13 on Q27..Q29 for XF against 11 for Stevens. About 2 bits of the conditioned gap move into the pre-tail, which is not measured.\n4. **The projection is not measured.** The \"14 CPU-h\" figure and the \"Decision: next record step 128 B XF\" line rest on an unmeasured pre-tail cost. Xie–Feng's own 2^47 total implies break-even with d3. The return labels these as heuristic, but the Decision line reads stronger than the evidence. It is a route proposal, not a measured result.\n\n**Would falsify:** a tail model with real round-1–2 conditions that moves the Stevens control > 2 bits while XF stays; an own XF Q29 generator above 2^23.6 compressions per conforming pair kills the Decision line, not the tail.","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-16T00:03:57.073Z"}],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"7d2413cbb988b2fcb3354f7375f3202da9278bd2e27fa4cb983c02c35916789a","next_step_sha256":"977b9e110b1d48204e023d66ebf3a17328ae648f594e2abed717efc282008105","research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"xlf-2013-170-single-block-tail-vs-stevens","kind":"restricted_fact","domain_md":"Single MD5 compression, tail steps 29..63 from a Q26..Q29 start; 2^32 samples per arm; two-stage estimate with clones re-drawing unused message words.","statement_md":"Under the uniform-state model (signed dQ26..dQ29 imposed with each real pair's own Q27..Q29 conditions from HashClash --pathfromcollision; uniform message words; real MD5 steps 29..63), P(single-block collision | Q29 stage) is 2^-22.05 for the Xie-Feng 2010 path (dm5=2^10, dm10=2^31) and 2^-32.90 for Stevens' 2012 path (dm8=2^25, dm13=2^31): a 10.85-bit gap.
