The person's direction is the smallest full collision below the record (128 B published, 134 B platform), preferably 32+32, through a mathematical shortcut; unequal sizes are allowed. Prereg `job8631-prereg.md` (114783ed1202...) was hashed in claim msg 7000 before any run. No collision or record is claimed. 119 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## 1. The shortcut: rotation-preserving word shifts (exact, `job8631-shift_lemma.py`)\nMD5 reads word w at round-1 index w, round-2 index 5i+1, round-3 index 3i+5 and round-4 index 7i (mod 16), and the rotation depends only on (round, index mod 4). Renaming every word w -> w-k with k = 4, 8 or 12 moves each use of each word by an index offset of +-k within its round. So every step that carries a message difference keeps its rotation amount; checked for all 16 words, 4 rounds and k = 0..15, only k = 0, 4, 8, 12 qualify.\nApplied to the known single-block differences (Xie-Feng 2010 = XLF 2013/170 Table 4, Table 5, Table 6 and Stevens 2012), 9 shifts fit an equal-length single block (bytes 0..L-1, L <= 55, so total <= 110 B):\n\n| shift | dM | bytes | min L |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| XF k=4 | m1 +2^10, m6 +2^31 | 5, 27 | **28** |\n| Stevens k=8 | m0 +2^25, m5 +2^31 | 3, 23 | **24** |\n| Stevens k=4 | m4 +2^25, m9 +2^31 | 19, 39 | 40 |\n| T6 k=4 | m3, m4, m9 | 15, 19, 39 | 40 |\n| T5 k=4 | m1, m6, m10 | 5, 27, 43 | 44 |\n| Stevens k=12, T6 k=12 | m1/m12, m1/m11/m12 | ..51 | 52 |\n| XF k=8, T5 k=8 | m2 +2^31, m13 +2^10 (+m6) | ..53 | 54 |\n\nOnly XF k=4 and Stevens k=8 fit 32+32. For XF k=4 (dM' = m1 +2^10, m6 +2^31), the uses move from steps 5,10 | 20,21 | 32,39 | 51,54 to 1,6 | 16,17 | 36,43 | 55,58: uniformly -4 steps in rounds 1-2 and +4 steps in rounds 3-4, with the order kept. The Stevens k=8 shift wraps in round 3 (m5 at 32 before m0 at 41).\nBefore this, only the unshifted differences had been placed against padding (#3014/#3104: byte 55 rules out Stevens' dM for L <= 55; #4128/#4149: XF's path vs L = 44..63).\n\n## 2. Rounds 3-4 under the shift (Monte Carlo, `job8631-tailmc.c`)\nStart rows were XF rows 33..36 (signed differences and conditions), with every other bit and all 16 words uniform, 2^28 samples per arm, prereg seeds.\n- XF dM from Q33..Q36: full collision 2^-7.999 (1,049,113).\n- dM' from the same rows at Q37..Q40: 2^-11.992 (65,908).\n- Ratio 2^-3.99 +- 0.006, against the prereg prediction of 2^-4 +- 0.5.\n\nThe 4 extra conditions come from XF steps 44..47, which become shifted steps 48..51. On the pure-MSB chain those steps keep dT = 0 with probability 1 under H and 1/2 under I.\n**From shifted Q37 the rounds-3/4 tail of dM' costs 2^-12.**\n\n## 3. Round 1 under padding (exact z3 `job8631-shsat.py`, direct recheck `job8631-check_shift.py`)\nShifted row t carries XF row t+4 (t = 1..12). Shifted steps 0..11 use F with rotations 7/12/17/22 and the shifted K. Q-3..Q0 are the IV; XF row 4 needs IV bit 22 = 1, which holds.\n- **Served rows 1..12, every character kept:** UNSAT for L = 28, 32, 40, 44 and 47 (0.2 s each). SAT for L = 48, with a witness that conforms fully, including XF row 9 bit 30, which the real 2010 pair breaks. Shifting the real XF pair's own states also works for L = 48..55 and breaks only that same bit.\n- **Rows 8..12 relaxed to XF's modular differences (the #4149 relaxation):** SAT for every L tested, 28/32/36/40/44/45/46/47 (3-16 s). At L = 32 this gives a padded 32-byte pair (m8 = 0x80, m9..m15 = 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0x100, 0) that follows XF's round 1 exactly through shifted row 7 and with XF's modular differences on rows 8..12.\n\nAll 9 SAT witnesses recheck with plain integer steps: no failing condition, padding correct.\n\n## 4. The obstruction: shifted steps 13 and 14 (exact z3 `job8631-shsat2.py`)\nXF makes its round-2 entry rows 17..20 with G-steps 16..19 (rotations 5/9/14/20). Under the shift those rows must come from F-steps 12..15 (rotations 7/12/17/22), with fixed message words at L = 32.\n- Keeping only the modular differences of XF rows 12..20 (shifted rows 8..16) is UNSAT in 0.2 s, with no bit conditions and no padding.\n- The contradiction is local. Step 13 alone (rows 10..14) and step 14 alone (rows 11..15) are each UNSAT; steps 12 and 15 alone are unknown at 120 s.\n- The joined instance is UNSAT for L = 32, 40, 48, 52, 55 and with no padding: rows 1-7 exact, 8-16 modular, 17-20 exact (XF 21..24) through the round-2 steps 16..19.\n- Encoding controls are SAT: served rows 1..12 through 12, 16 and 20 steps.\n\nSo XF's round 1 (at L = 32 re-signed) and XF's rounds 3-4 tail can be reused. XF's round 2 cannot: it needs differences that F-steps 13-14 cannot produce. A new middle segment is needed for shifted rows 13..36.\n\n## 5. What this means for 32+32\n- **Degrees of freedom.** At L = 32, m8..m15 are padding constants, so shifted rows Q9..Q16 are functions of Q5..Q8 alone (from the step equation). A 32+32 pair therefore has 256 free bits for every condition of its characteristic. XF's path has 388 conditions: 143 on rows 9..16 and 212 on rows 17..32. No XF-density path can exist at L = 32.\n- **Budget for the new middle segment** (heuristic count 2^(8L - C), not a proof): about 256 - 152 (reused round-1 rows) - 12 (tail) = 92 conditions at L = 32, and 276 at L = 55. To beat generic 32+32 (2^64.3 MD5, about 24 GPU-years at 3e10/s), the conditions that message modification cannot absorb must stay under about 64.\n- **Unequal sizes do not help.**\n - 4+60: the 60-byte message needs two blocks and the 4-byte message one. There is no shared differential, and the 2^32 short messages give a multi-target search of about 2^96. Generically a split costs max(2^64, 2^(128 - 8 min(La, Lb))), so no split beats 32+32.\n - Both sides in one block (La < Lb <= 55): #3559 proved two extra forced differences, dm14 = 8(Lb-La) in [8, 440] and the 0x80 byte at Lb. No known dM or shift of one carries such a dm14, so this only adds constraints.\n\n## 6. Plan (proposed route and next step)\nThe smallest useful next investigation is a signed differential path for the middle segment, shifted steps 12..36 (rows 13..37), for dM'. It must:\n- start from a shifted round-1 end (rows 9..12, with any signs that carry XF's modular differences, as in the L = 32 witness; exact rows at L >= 48);\n- take dm1 at steps 16 and 36 and dm6 at step 17;\n- enter XF rows 33..36 at shifted Q37..Q40, where the measured 2^-12 tail starts.\n\nTools: HashClash diffpathforward/backward/connect with dm1/dm6 (to be built on the M1 with Boost), or an own SAT search over signed differences one step at a time, starting at steps 13-14.\n- Falsifier: the best connecting path has more conditions than the budget (92 at L = 32, 276 at L = 55).\n- Stop: a path found (then a z3-verified conforming pair through row 40 and a generator), or the budget is exceeded at L = 55. The latter also ends the 32+32 hope for this dM'.\n- The Stevens k=8 shift (m0, m5, L >= 24) and k=4 shift (m4, m9, L >= 40) are the fallback dMs, tested the same way.\n\n## Not claimed\nNo path, pair or collision. An earlier upkeep session of mine also promoted #4213 into the smallest-collision state document. This is a clean-session second look, declared in claim message 7021. Every check below is independent of the author's z3 encoding.\n\n**Rung: measured (as claimed).** No path, pair or collision is claimed, and none is credited.\n\nWhat holds:\n- **E1, shift lemma.** Exact. Only k = 0, 4, 8 and 12 keep every message-word rotation. XF k=4 gives m1 +2^10 and m6 +2^31 (bytes 5 and 27, L >= 28). Stevens k=8 gives m0/m5 (L >= 24). My own recount gives the same allowed set and the same XF k=4 placement.\n- **E3, tail.** I reran tailmc.c (zig cc -O3, conds.h from make_conds.py, prereg seeds). The counts match exactly: xf_28 = 1,049,113 (2^-7.999) and shift_28 = 65,908 (2^-11.992). The code fits the claim: arm 1 starts at Q37 with dm1/dm6 (round-3 use at step 43, round-4 uses at 55/58); arm 0 starts at Q33 with dm5/dm10.\n- **E2, round 1.** I rechecked all 9 SAT witnesses with plain integer steps on the served path. The 8 relaxed witnesses (L 28..47) have no failing condition and correct padding. The L48 exact-row witness has no failing condition. The shifted real pair fails only [5,30,'!'], as reported. The exact-row UNSAT for L <= 47 is the author's z3 alone. It does not decide anything, because the plan uses the relaxed form, which is witnessed.\n- **E2b, obstruction (decisive).** I wrote my own exact bitwise carry DP: modular F and rotation feasibility over all x, y, z and the carry states, with no SAT solver. Shifted step 13 (XF rows 14..18 targets) and step 14 are each **UNSAT**, matching the author's z3 and an earlier CaDiCaL CNF. The DP also settles the author's two unknowns: steps 12 and 15 are **SAT** alone. Controls: XF's own G-steps 16..19 are SAT. XF F-steps 4 and 6..11 are SAT. Step 5 is UNSAT without dm5 and SAT with +2^10, as it should be. So the obstruction sits at steps 13-14, as stated.\n- **Section 5 arithmetic.** I recounted the condition characters in the served path: 10/143/156/56/23, total 388, with 212 on rows 17..32. XF rows 5..16 carry 152 conditions. 256-152-12 = 92 and 440-152-12 = 276. 2^64.3 at 3e10/s is about 23 years.\n\nNarrowings (advisory, not defects):\n1. The 92/276 budget subtracts XF's exact 152 round-1 conditions. At L <= 47, though, only the relaxed (re-signed) rows 8..12 are satisfiable, and their condition count is not 152. The budget is heuristic, as the author labels it; it should not become a falsifier threshold without recounting the conditions of the relaxed L=32 witness path.\n2. The tail is the uniform-state model of #4091/#4092 from Q37. It is not a conditional probability given a real middle segment.\n\n**Closed routes:** none conflict. OUTCOMES closes fastcoll truncation, Stevens m15 = 0x80 and the unshifted Stevens difference at L <= 55 (#3014/#3104). A shifted XF difference was not covered.\n\n**Attribution:** complete. #3014, #3104, #3556, #3559, #4091, #4092, #4128 and #4149 are cited and used. The prereg hash (114783ed1202...) matches the served prereg.md and was posted in message 7000 before the return. XLF 2013/170 and Stevens 2012 are cited as literature, and both input files are credited. The 152-condition and 256-free-bit statements are new to this return, not restatements.\n\n**What would falsify:**\n- a satisfying assignment for shifted step 13 or 14 alone, under XF's modular differences on rows 10..15;\n- a tail rerun far from 2^-12;\n- a relaxed witness that fails a condition or padding;\n- a shift k outside {0, 4, 8, 12} that keeps every rotation.","also_fix":null,"needs_reassessment":false,"created_at":"2026-10-16T13:49:44.515Z"}],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"95ddb16417e1b195a77a1abde397a555a32e0b9d7dfd055c2d3435545146ff47","next_step_sha256":"d936412db515962629eddd963bd92bb02403bdb22387665e59b108ac8b5af4c4","research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[{"key":"md5-rotation-preserving-word-shift","kind":"finite","domain_md":"MD5 (RFC 1321) step schedule and rotation table; known single-block dMs Xie-Feng 2010/XLF 2013 Tables 4-6, Stevens 2012.","statement_md":"In MD5, renaming message words w -> (w - k) mod 16 keeps the rotation amount of every use of every word in all four rounds exactly when k is 0, 4, 8 or 12.
