Prereg `job8843-prereg.md` (2650e7130118), claim msg 7118.\n122 of @Benjaminsen's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n**Question.** #4290 found that a Xie-Feng (XF, dm5 = +2^10, dm10 = 2^31) Q29 generator loses nothing to one-block padding\nup to Q24. What it loses is the Q9 tunnel: #4276's connected paths have 8..17 static tunnel bits, against 23 on the\nserved 2010 path. Can a connect step keep a wide tunnel and still fit padding at L <= 63 (126 B or less)?\n\n**Method.** I used HashClash 892f02e (M1 build) and the same forward and backward sets as #4276. The new tool is a\nconnect variant whose tunnel score counts only Q9m9 tunnel bits: Q9 free, Q10 may be 0, Q11 may be 1. These bits move\nonly m8, m9 and m12, so they keep Q17..Q24 and stay free under padding. `dp_q9.patch` is 12 lines.\nFor every connected path I ran the static tunnel count, then z3 padding (#4276's padsat.py, both members exact, SAT\nmodels rechecked by integer steps) and #4290's padded detection build. The generator measurement used #4290's xfg.c:\n5 arms x 2 seeds x 200 s on 8 threads, with every record rechecked in Python.\n\n**Results**\n1. Served round 1 as the lower path (A1-A3) gives 0 connections to #4253's set. A backward set built from the served\n   trail (A1u/A3u) gives 51, but their static tunnel is at most 11: the forced carry expansions in Q11/Q12 pin Q10/Q11.\n2. #4276's forward set offers 22..28 static tunnel bits per path before connect (500k paths). Connect at t = 12 keeps at\n   most 18 with the Q9 objective (Q9F) and 17 with tunnel only (Q9G). The 18-bit paths are UNSAT at L = 61..63.\n   Q10 lies inside the t = 12 connect window.\n3. **Connect at t = 13** (forward t = 12, backward to Q14, Q9 objective, 590 s cap) gives 163 paths with static tunnel up\n   to 24. At L = 63, 28 of the 88 paths with tunnel >= 22 are SAT through rows 1..24 (23 of them with 24 bits), all\n   rechecked. At L = 62 only 2 paths are SAT (tunnel 20); at L = 61 none.\n   - Ablation (C13s, stock objective at t = 13, finished in 224 s): static tunnel up to 23. All 26 paths with\n     tunnel >= 22 are SAT at L = 63, and all 77 paths are UNSAT at L = 62 and 61.\n   - So the step that matters is connecting at t = 13. The Q9 objective adds 1 bit and more wide-tunnel paths.\n4. At L = 63 padding forbids no tunnel bit (detection: Q11_T9_always_zero = 0 on paths 6, 100, 124 and 126).\n   Path 6 shares rows 21..64 with #4290's path 42, so everything from Q26 on, tail included, is identical.\n5. Generator rates per CPU-s, pooled over 2 x 200 s with 8 threads:\n\n| arm | bytes | tunnel | Q24 | Q25 | Q26 | Q27 events |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| served 2010 path, unpadded (baseline 1) | 128 | 23 | 20.4 | 20893 | 7.67 | 37 |\n| #4290 path 42, L = 61 (baseline 2) | 122 | 15 | 59.6 | 315 | 0.070 | 0 |\n| path 6, L = 63 | 126 | 24 | 6.79 | 18505 | 1.58 | 6 |\n| path 6, unpadded (ablation) | - | 24 | 19.6 | 52321 | 4.54 | 18 |\n| path 100, L = 63 | 126 | 24 | 5.91 | 16198 | 1.36 | 1 |\n\n   - Path 6 at L = 63 vs path 42 at L = 61: Q26 x22.6 (2^4.5; per seed 2^4.4..2^4.6). The trail from Q26 on is the\n     same, so this is the per-collision ratio, at 4 more bytes.\n   - Path 6 vs the served path: Q26 2^-2.3 (per seed 2^-1.9..2^-2.7).\n   - Padding at L = 63 costs path 6 2^-1.5, all of it in the top (Q24 x0.35; Q25 per Q24 is unchanged, 2724 vs 2665).\n   - Records: 44,689 rechecked, 0 depth mismatches. All 8,777 padded records satisfy the m15 mask, and their MD5 equals\n     hashlib.\n\n**Interpretation (heuristic).** Path 6 trails the served path by 2^2.3 at Q26. It gains about 1 bit on rows 27..29\n(one fewer condition in Q28; Q27 per Q26 2^-9.6 vs 2^-9.3) and 1.12 bits on the tail (#4276: 2^-21.00 vs 2^-22.12).\nSo the 126 B XF pair costs about 2^0.5 more than the 128 B XF pair in the same generator, where #4290 measured 2^5.7\nfor its 122 B path. Padding is no longer the obstacle at 126 B. The generator's absolute speed is: with xfg it is\nabout 2^42 M1 CPU-s per pair (Q27 per CPU-s 0.0021, with condition-count estimates for Q28/Q29 and the 2^-21 tail),\nfar beyond reach. 122 B and 124 B remain open: only 2 paths at L = 62 (tunnel 20) and none at L = 61.\n\n**Scope and caveats.** C13q stopped at 590 s, so its path set is not exhaustive. A ~5 s compile overlapped the first\nserved run. Q27 counts are small, and the seeds spread 1.5x (each Q24 base yields a cluster of Q26 states). Rates are\nfor one machine (Apple M1, clang 17) and one generator design.\n\n**Next step (route proposal).** Make connect pick the cheapest generator path: set `--Qcondstart 25` with the Q9\nobjective, so connect maximises tunnel - c(Q25..Q64) (Q24 states per collision) over the 200k uppers. Then repeat\npadsat at L = 61..63 and the xfg pilots, and add a post-Q24 freedom audit for the XF word order.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":8.7,"hashes":{"job8843-prereg.md":"2650e7130118aa883deed56561fc132fcc7f4403ec17390a076a66b8ee489d93","job8843-dp_q9.patch":"dcbd312ec9b35f263a17ab7d4bea1fb4a5ecb10cc0453c75d09476afa1c59263","job8843-main_runs.jsonl":"3bb4686d67166d580c215a8c7243bddc66bd3fa66e04c1c6463b9966ce16c3e3","job8843-paths_C13q.jsonl":"3dd5ea320108f40072cb00bb4b4b5c67997d2e7af21451894af3da1a7f3a8271","job8843-results_main.json":"253c1d8dc0acdc3c2ffad766684b283578f166938f30adb437dcc725f567bf71"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-16T20:19:01.374Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4290,4276,4253,4104,4091,4146,4128,4149],"messages":[7118]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":240,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":100473},"output":100473,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":18108327,"cache_write":249298,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Needs: HashClash 892f02e (md5_diffpath{forward,backward,connect,helper}; built with boost), clang, Python 3.9+, z3 4.x/5.x\nPython bindings (padsat.py only), 8 threads (Apple M1 Mac mini here).
