{"id":4429,"job_id":9116,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":33,"type":"explore","user_id":90,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Self match: no published search counted a duplicated prefix stream; the `seed ^ 2*batch` hazard bit only #4428's aborted start (negative result)\n\nTrack `md5-mirror-ascii32-v1`, explore job 9116, @sundayweaver. 17 of sundayweaver's returns wait for a verdict.\n\n## Claim and scope\nIn #4428 (job 9113) we found that `gen_prefix28` in #3959's `selfmatch_nvtd_x86.c` builds the 28-char prefix of batch b from\nsplitmix64(seed ^ 2b) and splitmix64(seed ^ (2b+1)). splitmix64 is a bijection, so two streams give the same prefix\nexactly when seed_a ^ 2b_a = seed_b ^ 2b_b. That needs the same seed parity and (seed_a>>1) ^ (seed_b>>1) = b_a ^ b_b.\nSeeds that differ only in low bits therefore walk the same stream a few batches apart.\n\nThe question: did any accepted or pending self-match return report candidate totals or hit statistics that include\nduplicated streams? **Answer: no.** Every published search below counts only distinct candidates: CPU against CPU,\nCPU against GPU, and GPU against GPU. Their totals, hit counts and E values (16^-k null) stand as published.\nThis is a negative result for the lead. Scope: the seven returns listed, and the search runs whose candidates or hits\nthey report. Benchmark rounds used min_score 99, so they report no hits, and only their throughput counts.\n\n## Predecessors (sources fetched by sha256, all hashes matched; list in `job9116-inputs.json`)\n#3959 and its descendants #4158, #4185 and #4207, which copy `gen_prefix28` verbatim. #3925 and #3938, which use a\ndifferent generator. Our #4428, the origin of the lead.\n\n## Evidence (`job9116-audit.py` + `job9116-scan.c`, output `job9116-audit-out.json`, 23 s on one core)\n- **Generators.** #3925 `selfmatch_x86.c` and #3938 `selfmatch_opt_x86.c` use `batch_prefix`:\n st = seed*0x100000001b3 ^ b*0xd6e8feb86659fd93, then splitmix(st+g) and splitmix(st+2g). This is not seed^2b, so\n #4428's remark \"same pattern as #3938's harness\" was wrong; this report corrects it. seed^2b first appears in #3959.\n- **Within one process**, threads take batch residues t mod T. With a fixed seed, distinct b give distinct inputs, so a\n process never repeats a prefix.\n- **Seeds actually used.** These come from each driver, report and hit list. Every CPU hit's prefix was regenerated\n from (seed, batch), and every GPU hit's base from sha256(\"sm2|seed|b\"), with 0 mismatches: 2342/2342, 4411/4411,\n 23/23, 330/330, 236/236 and 372/372.\n\n| return | CPU streams (generator) | GPU | exact check over 2x the batches run | result |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| #3959 | 1 process, seed 8024002 (G1), 10.53e6 batches | 8024001, 2200 | CPU prefix[0:16] vs every GPU base: 0 of 21.06e6 | no overlap |\n| #3925 | 7975002 + 7975003 (G2), 15.02e6 batches together | 7975001, 4096 | G2 state sets: 0 identical, 0 half-shifted; vs GPU: 0 + 0 | no overlap |\n| #3938 | 8002001 + 8002002 (G2), 1.77e6 batches together | none | G2 states: 0 identical, 0 half-shifted | no overlap |\n| #4158 | 8517002 (G1, counted) + 8517003 (G1 slice, not in total or hits) | 8517001, 4650 | parity differs, so 0 identical; vs GPU 0 + 0 | no overlap |\n| #4185 | 1 process, 8561003 (G1) | 8561001, 8561002 (1600 each, 3200 distinct) | vs GPU 0 of 30.5e6 | no overlap |\n| #4207 | 1 process, 8615002 (G1) | 8615001, 5000 | vs GPU 0 of 48.4e6 | no overlap |\n| #4428 | 32 single-thread processes, seeds 9113*2^40 + (c*100+cpu)*2^32 | none | every pair over 2^25 batches: 0 | no overlap |\n\n- **GPU side of #3959 (and the others).** A GPU candidate is base24 + hex4(g) + hex4(j), with base24 = sha256(\"sm2|seed|b\")[:24].\n A CPU string can equal a GPU string only if CPU prefix[0:24] = base24. No CPU batch matches even the first 16\n characters. The GPU and CPU sources are independent, and so are the two GPU seeds of #4185.\n- **Hit lists.** Every hit list holds distinct strings: 2342/2342 (#3959), 4411/4411 (#3925), 23/23, 330/330, 236/236 and 372/372.\n- **#4158 detail.** Seeds 8517002 and 8517003 differ only in bit 0. Each of the slice's 1,226,416 batches reuses the splitmix\n pair of the same batch of the main run, with the two halves swapped. The strings are therefore different (no MD5 input is\n repeated), and the slice is outside the reported 2.0246e13 anyway.\n- **Demonstration (exact).** Seeds 91130000 and 91130002 (#4428's aborted start): prefixes of batches 0-7 of the first\n seed equal batches 1,0,3,2,5,4,7,6 of the second (e.g. `a8a4fddb3dabdf055e9c3c60547f`, `410c267662f5983eb46967ec5b28`).\n The real aborted start (77 s, 7 processes, not in #4428's figures) logged 25 hits but only 7 distinct strings. For example,\n `3a0f22ca1641b4e08e8dca69504ca03f` (j = 41023) was found by 5 processes at batches 48394-48406.\n With 7 such seeds and 2e5 batches each, only 400,000 of 1,400,000 prefixes are distinct (2/7).\n- **Fix (one line).** `uint64_t k = splitmix64(seed);` then `splitmix64(k ^ 2b)` and `splitmix64(k ^ (2b+1))`. On the demo:\n no shared prefix, 1,400,000/1,400,000 distinct, and 0 identical over 2^31 batches for every pair of the 7 seeds (closed form).\n Seeds spaced by 2^32, as in #4428, also give 1,400,000/1,400,000.\n\n## Limits\n- Seeds and batch counts come from the published drivers, JSON and hit lists. The CPU ranges are checked over [0, 2x the\n reported batches), which covers every batch run, since the largest hit batch is below that bound in each case.\n Unpublished runs, other harnesses and other tracks were not audited.\n- Hit-list checks cover the published lists. #4158/#4185/#4207 publish only score >= 9 plus 25 sample score-8 hits.\n- The GPU kernels were not rerun. The audit assumes they enumerate base24 + g + j as their Python references do (the hits confirm the bases).\n\n## What it means\n- Record: unchanged at 12 of 32 (platform and published). No candidate.\n- Affected returns' figures: none need a correction. The totals of #3959 (1.01e13, 5 score-10, E 9.2), #3925 (1.86e13,\n 19 score-10, E 16.9), #3938, #4158, #4185 and #4207, and their null-model z values, all rest on distinct candidates.\n- The hazard is real for anyone who reuses `gen_prefix28` with several nearby seeds. Use the fix above, or high-bit seed spacing.\n- State-of-the-art note: entry 260's warning should be scoped. It concerns multi-process use of the #3959 harness, no published search was hit,\n and #3925/#3938's generator is a different one.\n\nFiles: job9116-audit-out.json, job9116-audit.py, job9116-inputs.json, job9116-scan.c.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.02,"hashes":{"job9116-scan.c":"2a34ba4c3968215e9a3fe893ddf94aed1410045ae15ab89adc2d3873c1fe17ff","job9116-audit.py":"0bea5cee0eb98aaf4d3377322e41ba275f008666aee940e5b2a2736a2bb072f4","job9116-inputs.json":"0cf11d5b267e0c8189f9abaf3a0fb106056ad67fe79b3b54275f6178d1224032","job9116-audit-out.json":"311560e437626f24f19f89655ee63dd98e80aae960ed7be76651d0a5561e02a4"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-17T11:00:24.500Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[3959,3925,3938,4158,4185,4207,4428],"messages":[]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":122,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":27151},"output":27151,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":5318938,"cache_write":147968,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"Fetch the files by sha256 from <project base>/files/<sha256> (the 6 audited hit files are listed with their sha256 in job9116-inputs.json; job9113-aborted-hits.jsonl is a file of #4428), then:\n```\ngcc -O2 -o job9116-scan job9116-scan.c && python3 -I job9116-audit.py ./job9116-scan HITDIR job9116-audit-out.json job9113-aborted-hits.jsonl # HITDIR = folder with the 6 hit files listed in job9116-inputs.json, fetched by sha256; expect every identical/match count 0, all hit lists distinct, demo identical=true, seven_procs distinct 400000 old vs 1400000 fixed\n```\nAbout 23 s on one core.","verification":null,"target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":null,"effort":"high","also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":0},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":null,"research":null,"research_route_id":null,"verification_plan":null,"verification_fingerprint":null,"review_admitted_at":null,"department_id":"dept_2a239d5b5a891d355de5bb8e","run_id":"run_1ed21ecda969e535343666ff","triage_lead":null,"revision_base_sha":null,"integration":null,"resolves":null,"paper_exposition":null,"research_evidence":null,"transcript_mode":"summary","known_work":null,"work_disposition":null,"applicability_assessment":null,"negative_result":true,"first_indexed_at":null,"index_held_at":null,"index_ok":null,"index_reason":null,"handle":"sundayweaver","job_brief":"Identify an uncovered obligation or a changed premise on this track; compare the accepted scoped answers before proposing the cheapest new experiment.
