Plan job; generic methods only (no differential path fits 72 free bits).\nHardware: Apple M1 Mac mini (4P+4E), 8 threads, Apple clang -O3 -mcpu=apple-m1, scalar unrolled MD5 (md5u.h, checked against hashlib on 200 random inputs).\nRungs: counts are exact arithmetic; rates and pairs are measured; cost extrapolations are heuristic.\n\n## 1. How many matches exist (exact arithmetic on the random-function model)\n- All byte strings of length 0..9: |D| = 2^72.0056, so E[full collision pairs] = C(|D|,2)/2^128 = **2^15.01**. They exist.\n- Length 0..8: E = 2^-0.99, P(at least one) = 0.40 (Poisson). Length 0..9 printable ASCII (0x20..0x7e): E = 2^-10.71, P = 0.0006.\n- The tweet example: md5(\"asf7\") = ce614f72078897d97252c123cf1f3ad6, md5(\"99feaj88ø\") = cb511c4e82bd2e7c98499657d2f7b62e, and \"99feaj88ø\" is 10 bytes in UTF-8.\n A string of at most 9 bytes with the MD5 of a *fixed* \"asf7\" is expected 2^-55.99 times: almost surely none exists, so any tiny match has to be a free pair.\n\n## 2. E1: tiny inputs behave like the birthday model (measured, PASS)\nN = 2^26 distinct 9-byte strings per alphabet (seed 9357), pairs sharing the first t digest bits, t = 20..64, vs C(N,2)/2^t:\nmax |z| = 2.47 (all bytes) and 2.39 (printable) over the t with >= 5 expected (prereg: PASS at <= 4). Deepest pairs: 52 bits in both, as expected for N = 2^26 (0.5 pairs at t = 52).\nRate: 25.9 M/s (loop MD5, 8 threads, including generation); the unrolled md5_9 gives 9.9 M/s on one P-core and 58.9 M/s on 8 threads (2^25.81/s).\n\n## 3. E2: distinguished-point rho (measured, PASS)\nWalk f(x) = first 72 digest bits as the next 9-byte input (DP = 20 zero bits); a collision of f is a 72-bit digest match.\n- Found after 1.30e11 evaluations (1.51x sqrt(pi 2^72/2) = 2^36.33), 2,208 s, 124,395 DPs, no Robin Hoods:\n md5(hex b14d487c5cad5092bd) = fd08ea85150e34ee02**7fc08c34797d2d**, md5(hex de69f98a205fd54927) = fd08ea85150e34ee02**94b6a65103f2be**: 72 equal leading bits, 9 bytes each.\n- Printable variant (f = first 59 bits encoded in base 95 as 9 chars, DP 12): 13 seeds, 13 pairs with 59..64 equal leading bits, mean work 1.31x expected\n (SE about 0.15). Best: md5(`(CCTT_\\$,`) and md5(`,g ~_PQs*`) (hex 28434354545f5c242c, 2c67207e5f5051732a) share the first 16 hex digits, d01595301798b683 (64 bits).\n- Calibration: 60 runs each at 36 bits (1 and 8 threads) and 44 bits gave 1.09x, 1.01x and 1.04x. The 59-bit excess (about 2 sigma) is unexplained but changes nothing below.\nAll 14 pairs are rechecked with hashlib in pairs.json.\n\n## 4. What a full 128-bit match under 10 bytes costs (heuristic extrapolation at 2^25.81 MD5/s)\n- A memoryless walk can match at most as many bits as the input has (72): every 72-bit match is a full collision with probability 2^-56. Section 3 is therefore the limit of the cheap method.\n- Golden-collision search (van Oorschot and Wiener 1999, about 2.5 sqrt(N^3/w) per golden pair, divided by the G = 2^15 golden pairs) with N = 2^72:\n 2^79.3 evaluations with w = 2^30 table entries (4e8 M1-years), 2^74.3 with 2^40, 2^69.3 with 2^50.\n- Table birthday: 2^64.5 hashes (1.4e4 M1-years) but 2^64.5 stored entries (2.4e20 bytes). Exhaustive length <= 8: 2^64 hashes, and a pair exists only with P 0.40.\n- For comparison, a plain full collision with free 16-byte inputs (memoryless) is 2^64.33 hashes, 1.2e4 M1-years. Restricting to 9 bytes makes the generic problem *harder*, not easier.\n\n## Negative scope and reopening\nNo full match; none was expected. A full collision with at most 9 bytes per side needs >= 2^69 MD5 evaluations under any memory budget we can name (heuristic), far beyond this project's compute.\nReopen if: a structural (non-generic) attack on single-block MD5 with 72 free bits appears; or the direction accepts partial matches: the 72-bit and 64-bit printable pairs above are the cheap tweetable results. Beyond 72 bits a 9-byte walk cannot help; an 80-bit match would need a 2^40-entry table birthday or the golden-collision factor.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":5.7,"hashes":{"job9357-rho.c":"3a1f0893c2cd3ae46bf3adc168b6dc65edaeacfb0318c84266ceb4e1232c1835","job9357-md5u.h":"203432a96d445d6fd4c73ddfbf672f7d63282b0073ac86e943867f928c92cf66","job9357-birth.c":"fb1d8968da7bb00b6ae94274b9bf45ecd5272be42258c3cf9909dce9c54ce427","job9357-prereg.md":"2dec0f5e3d4964ec895bf555455fcf3a920fec99bcba549d7afbf4ed6cd401c6","job9357-pairs.json":"eaab8a4caf36c507e9e916b63ccb5aeec714573f1127619cc58b5200d903fa96","job9357-e1_summary.json":"2564972224bd9bc8a05acd8aa3e233798f15dc98f770e81ca39efd202b71802b"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-18T12:02:56.792Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[],"messages":[7468]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":108,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":51313},"output":51313,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":3414183,"cache_write":96268,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (job 9357): truncated-MD5 matches between 9-byte strings\nFiles are fetched as <server origin>/files/<sha256>?raw=1 (Accept: text/plain), saved under the names after the job9357- prefix\n(md5s.h, md5u.h, gen_md5u.py, birth.c, rho.c, e1_check.py, check_pairs.py).
