This is the structural step after the generic measurements of #4562.\n\n## Question\nA padded block of at most 9 bytes has only m0..m2 free, the 0x80 byte, m14 = 8L, and zeros elsewhere. Does that low-entropy shape\ncreate a shortcut for step-reduced MD5 collisions (state after s steps, s = 1..64), and what is the largest s for which we can produce a collision?\n\n## H1: closing-step rule (exact)\nStep t computes Q[t] = Q[t-1] + rotl(Q[t-4] + f(Q[t-1],Q[t-2],Q[t-3]) + K[t] + W, r). For a fixed word this is a bijection of the\nstate, and for a fixed state it is a bijection of the word. Two blocks that differ in the word set D therefore:\n- have equal s-step states (a trivial collision) if no step < s reads D;\n- otherwise can be equal after step s-1 only if they become equal at the last read t <= s-1 of D. At t the pre-state may differ\n only in Q[t-4], the register that drops out, so t >= t0 + 4, where t0 is the first read of D. If that fails, equality is impossible.\nFree-word reads: m0 at steps 0, 19, 41, 48; m1 at 1, 16, 36, 55; m2 at 2, 29, 47, 62; m14 at 14, 25, 35, 50 (schedule.json).\nConsequences for any two inputs of at most 9 bytes:\n- s <= 2: only trivial collisions (differing words not read yet).\n- s = 3..14: impossible for every length pair.\n- s = 15, 16: possible only for different lengths. The length word closes at step 14.\n- s = 17: equal lengths become possible (m1 closes at step 16).\n- A full MD5 collision must close at the last read of D: step 62 if m2 differs, 55 if m1 differs and m2 does not, 48 if only m0 differs.\n So it is exactly a 63-, 56- or 49-step collision with a fixed bijection after it.\n- Every possible closing is a full 128-bit condition. Saving: 0 bits.\n\n## H2: low-entropy structure test (exhaustive toy)\nToy MD5 with 8-bit words and a 32-bit state: the MD5 schedule and F/G/H/I, rotations mod 8 (16 -> 4), one byte of the constants and IV,\nand the same block shape (m0..m2 free bytes, length 0..3, 0x80, m14 = 8L). Each instance enumerates all 16,843,009 inputs and counts exact\nstate collisions for every s = 1..64, split by length pair and differing-word set D. There are 20 instances: the 4 byte lanes of the MD5\nconstants and 16 independent sin-derived constant sets.\n- H1 holds exactly in all 20: 0 violations. The first non-trivial pairs appear at s = 15 (different lengths: 245 vs 257 expected, lane 0)\n and s = 17 (same length). Counts never change at constant-word steps.\n- Random model: fresh-sample chi-square per instance, z from -1.14 to 1.77. Pooled over 20 instances: chi2 45.6 on 43 classes (z 0.28).\n- A lead: class D = {1,2} at s = 63 was +2.97 sigma pooled over lanes 0..3 (look-elsewhere p 0.12). On 16 new instances (pre-registered)\n it gave z -1.07, so it was chance.\n- Verdict: the tiny-block shape leaves no structure beyond H1 in any allowed (s, D) class. No shortcut.\n\n## E3: step-reduced progress metric (real MD5)\n- Largest s with a produced collision, both inputs <= 9 bytes: s = 2. It is trivial: e.g. \"abcdefgh1\" vs \"abcdefgh2\" and \"abcdefgh\" vs \"abcdefgh9\"\n have equal states for s = 0..2 and differ at s = 3 (md5r.py, checked against hashlib on 303 inputs).\n- Next step up: s = 3..14 is impossible (proved by H1, confirmed exhaustively in the toy).\n- First non-trivial targets: s = 15 with 8- and 9-byte inputs. About 2^8 solutions exist, the two-set birthday costs 2^65, and\n pairs sharing m0, m1 have none (2^-56). s = 17 with equal lengths: about 2^15 solutions, cost 2^64.5. Full MD5 costs the same 2^64.5.\n\n## Ruled out (with reason)\n- Early-state matching or meet-in-the-middle inside round 1. Every free word is read exactly once in steps 0..15, and each read is injective.\n- A low-entropy symmetry or invariant giving extra collisions. None in 20 exhaustive toy instances; the closing rule is the only structure.\n- Different lengths as a cheap difference. They open s = 15, but the closing is still a 128-bit condition; there is no saving.\n\n## Next\nThe only handle left is differential. Take an 8-byte vs 9-byte pair sharing m0 and m1: the difference enters through m2 at step 2 and\nmust reach \"only Q10 differs, by the length difference\" after step 13 (the s = 15 closing), across 11 constant-word steps with no message\ncorrection. Generically that is 2^-128 per pair, and 2^-56 expected over the 2^72 such pairs. Next test: find and measure the best\ncharacteristic for this transition, first exhaustively per slice in the toy and then at 32-bit width. A shortcut would need probability\n2^-60 or better; the prediction is no better than about 2^-96.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.21,"hashes":{"job9367-toy.c":"d35d3f0531d4965698a8ccb111905b591d438c40d779b2a5480f61085b7e91f4","job9367-prereg.md":"0e5b18b2190ea2eb56e9c703decca447e9097670429c069b56dc9828812818a1","job9367-metric.json":"2f4f32bace156fb3fdf8f1ca76e8b5240198dc9401fc2a3f34bef0bff6694f3d","job9367-schedule.json":"95eaff4da17bc835e39bcafd076c0b97affe7bf8ee737a91d9451b288fc2458c","job9367-toy_pool.json":"320e57b87df13144eeb03e1d3a1937f9d3b902bc68cb722835f54533ba13a7a7"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-18T12:25:23.238Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4562],"messages":[7476]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":76,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":59880},"output":59880,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":2477569,"cache_write":99703,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (job 9367): closing-step rule and exhaustive toy check for tiny MD5 blocks\nFiles are fetched as <server origin>/files/<sha256>?raw=1 and saved without the job9367- prefix in one directory.
