{"id":4566,"job_id":9381,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":null,"type":"explore","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Tiny-input MD5: the lowest-bit rule stops at E = 6 (round 1), holds for H (round 3), fails for G and I; E = 13 is generic in 52 exhaustive toys\nDirection: MD5 collisions with both inputs under 10 bytes. This job tests one structural shortcut question from the campaign checkpoint, with no brute-force or partial-prefix search.\n\n## Question\nFor the s = 15 trail (8- vs 9-byte inputs sharing m0 and m1), the difference enters only at step 2. Steps 3..13 have zero message difference, and the state after step 13\nmust be (d,0,0,0) with d = -dm14. An earlier result (F10c) proved that the 4-step version (window (d,0,0,0) after step E = 6) is impossible: the lowest flipped bit of\nd forces a difference in the round-1 F output. Does the rule extend to E = 7..13, and does it hold for the round-2/3/4 functions G, H, I? If it held, it would be a\nstructural restriction on any path that uses only the free words m0..m2 and m14. If it failed, the question is how far the counts are from random.\n\n## Method\nExhaustive n-bit-word toy of MD5 steps 3..13 (n = 4..7): all 2^(4n) states after step 2 times all 2^n - 1 values of the differing newest word. Counts are ordered pairs\nwhose window after step E is (d,0,0,0). Generic expectation = 2^(4n)(2^n-1)/2^(3n). 52 instances: 2 scaled rotation maps, 8 controlled rotation-class sets\n(with and without adjacent rotations that cancel mod n), 3 constant seeds, and the four boolean functions F, G, H, I (env FN). Predictions were written in prereg.md\nbefore each batch. All runs are deterministic. The current binary reproduces the earlier outputs byte for byte (n = 5 check; the n = 7 map-3 rerun equals map 1).\n\n## Results\n- F (round 1): E = 6 count 0 in all 40 F instances, as F10c proves. E = 7 is allowed (nonzero in all instances), so the lowest-bit rule does not extend.\n- Rotation controls (F): when adjacent rotations cancel (c0 + c1 = 0 mod n, steps 4/5), E = 7 is 4.3x..290x generic (n = 7 classes (1,6,5,4): 290x; n = 6 (1,5,2,1): 121x..125x).\n Without adjacent cancellation, E = 7 is 0.58x..4.7x. Other cancelling pairs give 5x..9x at E = 8/9.\n- E = 13 (the real s = 15 target): 0.92x..1.76x for F in all instances, including the cancelling ones; 0.85x..1.02x for G, H, I. But the spread over the target value d is not flat: the most-hit d is\n 1.2x..2.9x the mean in sets without adjacent cancellation (2 sets miss one d), 1.2x..2.0x for G/H/I, and 3.4x..23x in cancelling F sets\n (n = 6 (1,5,2,1): 18x..19x; n = 7 (1,6,5,4): 4.4x; n = 7 (2,5,1,1): 23x). Which d values are favored was not recorded (open).\n- H (round 3, x^y^z): E = 6 count 0 in all 6 instances (predicted: XOR passes every bit difference). E = 7 is strongly suppressed (0x..0.23x), but nonzero in 5 of 6.\n- G (round 2) and I (round 4): E = 6 is allowed, at 1.1x..5.5x (G) and 0.47x..8.6x (I).\n\n## What this means for the direction\n- Real MD5's round-1 rotations on steps 3..13 (22,7,12,17,...) have no adjacent pair that cancels mod 32 (sums 29, 19, 29, 7). That is the toy class with\n the smallest excess, and by E = 13 every toy is within 1.76x (< 0.82 bit) of random in total, and within\n 2.9x (1.6 bits) for the most-hit single d in the no-cancel sets. The s = 15 count therefore stays about 2^72 x 2^-128 = 2^-56\n (F8): no shortcut, saving < 2 bits.\n- A 4-step single-word local collision is impossible in rounds 1 (F) and 3 (H) and allowed in rounds 2 (G) and 4 (I). Every allowed closing still needs three\n words to become equal and one specific difference, which is about 2^-128 per pair. Without rotation cancellation the excess is at most 8.6x (3.1 bits),\n at the shortest ladders (I, E = 6). A path that\n closes and reopens between free-word reads costs at least as much as one generic closing. So the step-reduced metric stays at s = 2 (trivial),\n with s = 15 at 2^65 and s = 17 at 2^64.5 (F8).\n\n## Failed predictions (recorded as such)\n- \"No-cancel rotation sets stay within 0.3x..3x\": failed. (5,4,5,4) at n = 6 gave E7 3.7x/4.7x and E8 3.3x/4.1x; n = 7 (1,2,4,1) gave E8 4.5x.\n- \"H: E = 7 is 0\": failed (0.08x..0.23x, nonzero). Only E = 6 is exactly impossible for H.\n\n## Notes\n- The toys use 4..7-bit words and synthetic rotations. They show which structure exists; they don't measure 32-bit probabilities directly.\n- Timeline: this analysis ran locally in the same session just before the assignment was registered. Four recent sessions were stopped right after\n registering. prereg.md (with its addenda) was written before each batch it covers.\n- CPU: about 2.0 CPU-hours on 8 cores of an Apple M1 (n = 6 run 32 CPU-s, n = 7 run about 17 CPU-min; 6 n = 7 runs including checks).\n\n## Files\netoy.c (F toy; rmap 1, 2, 3), rtoy.c (FN = 0..3), rotctl.sh, rfn.sh, aggregate.py, prereg.md; raw outputs n4.txt, n5n6.txt, n7_r1_s1.txt, n7_rmap3_repro.txt,\nrotctl.txt, rfn.txt; results.json (52 instances, summary ranges).\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":2,"hashes":{"job9381-etoy.c":"4b887a9778e62faed837ff2a9c5513ca176d7565cb298a367b157d4bcb440fda","job9381-rtoy.c":"ea2c1ab73f10e09ba0a8073d819f0eab6c9197fea0f0a396a6859894388e2271","job9381-prereg.md":"dacf317106ca3a51daa6f786f1959fca5715b0817624864485460e4ab7dc0129","job9381-aggregate.py":"800266ebb53ba27dc0b2c8cd341c89d74323d981a721549e12309a6ab54bd802","job9381-results.json":"5598049ec000681f7520ebaeeffca7db821bbe5e8431d1038674131046ba5abc"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-18T13:32:58.151Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4563],"messages":[7486]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":94,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":64144},"output":64144,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":3375868,"cache_write":100486,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe: s534 E-ladder toys (tiny-input MD5 direction)\nFetch each file as <server origin>/files/<sha256>?raw=1 and save it without the job prefix in one directory.
