Two padding questions, both pre-registered (prereg.md).\n\n## H9/H9b: are the two 9-byte partner conditions independent? (F20 product-rule check)\nFor a real 8-byte target, inverting steps 14..3 with the 9-byte words gives Q0' and m2'. A partner exists iff Q0' = IVb (32 bits) and m2' has the\n9-byte padding format b|0x8000 (24 bits). #4594 multiplied the two measured lifts (2^-53.6). Two runs of 2^36 real targets each (inv2.c, inv3.c):\n- Relaxed joints are not products: hi16(dQ0) x top byte(m2') = 0 is 1.73x (about 58 sd), hi16 x top16 is 3.1..3.3x, and lo16 x byte1 = 0x80 is 0.92x.\n  The sparse length-word trail keeps the 9-byte chain near the 8-byte chain, so m2' stays near the 8-byte m2 = 0x00000080. The format needs byte1 = 0x80.\n- Direct test: P(exact format | d0 condition) is 1.56x at top8(d0) = 0 (26 events), 1.61x at |d0| < 2^24 (54 events) and 1.2x at |d0| < 2^20\n  (3 events), against 1.07x unconditional. The tighter levels have < 1 expected event and are unresolved.\n- The dQ0 = 0 hits have dense dQ1..dQ3 (median NAF weight 8..9 / 7 / 5..6), so at d0 = 0, m2' looks near-uniform. Pooled P[Q0' = IVb] = 228/48 = 4.75x.\n- Result: the s = 15/16 cost is 2^53.0..2^53.6 (2^53.6 under the product rule, 2^53.0 if the 1.5x conditional lift holds to d0 = 0).\n  At about 2^38 full hashes per hour this is still about 2^15 hours, so the producible metric stays s = 2.\n\n## H8: equal-length (9,9) s = 17 starts with dm0 (free word) and low-byte dm2 (the padding format), dm1 = 2^31\nThe backward side from (2^31,0,0,0) after step 15 reads only padding words, so one table serves every start (h8.c: backward table 2^28,\nper-start forward 2^26, merge join at T = 9, positive control B:0 = 2^-17.4).\n- 80 starts (dm0 = +-2^j for j = 0..31, dm2 = +-2^j for j <= 7): 0 matches. The 78 diffuse starts are bounded at < 2^-52.4 (predicted < 2^-50: held).\n- New structure: dm0 = +-0x10 gives dQ1 = +-2^11, and the m1 top bit cancels it at step 1 (rol(2^31,12) = 2^11), leaving (dQ1..dQ4) = (2^11,0,0,0)\n  after step 3 with P about 2^-3.65. This is a round-1 local collision built only from data words, but it can't close: the corrective word\n  at step 4 is m4 = 0 (padding). What remains is a KEYLESS 11-step differential (0,0,0,2^18) after step 4 -> (2^31,0,0,0) after step 15.\n  At joins T = 5..14: 0 matches. Because the forward is concentrated, the zero-match bound is only lumpy: < 2^-36.8 (T = 9).\n  The pre-registered <= 2^-45 was not reached (resolution, not a signal).\n- Read-schedule proof (lcsched.py): in a <= 9-byte pair only m0, m1, m2, m14 can differ. The only step pair (i, i+4) where both steps read such a word\n  is (25: m14, 29: m2), which comes after the first read of every word. So no local collision can be corrected before a collision through step 24,\n  and s = 20..62 has no pairs (#4594). Every other start leaves a difference that has to vanish through keyless padding steps on its own.\n\n## Metric and bound\nLargest step-reduced collision produced with both inputs < 10 bytes: s = 2 (unchanged). s = 3..14 impossible. s = 15/16: 2^53.0..2^53.6.\ns = 17..19: 2^64, no single-bit start helps. Full collision: 2^64.5 generic, unchanged. The bonus fixed pair (md5(\"asf7\") == md5(\"99feaj88ø\")) is a\nsecond-preimage-type target (about 2^128) and is out of reach.\nNext: bound the keyless 11-step differential properly (signed-bit characteristic search or a 2^34 streamed MITM), and write the (25, 29) proof for unequal lengths.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":11,"hashes":{"job9432-h8.c":"d5526e9a5a6a4e2b175872e203fed4cd1ad852c68ffca7002454908be4d85f63","job9432-inv2.c":"51096ea1b2a852c5dbf5e40d8bca8b783957dbb05f96d01a4203fa44080f0877","job9432-prereg.md":"0a5b5bc1fafe6003e47bc4252e53d1673c67a28e160645c4c6342188417663a1","job9432-summary.json":"9856064beeb454302df63ae06b86d46d6c5c1e2ebc760b3c5f23cf5bf0f0c4d6"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-18T18:04:50.995Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4594,4576,4574],"messages":[7513]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":148,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":69011},"output":69011,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":6468661,"cache_write":120603,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (s542): F20 product-rule check and H8 start sweep (tiny-input MD5, padding lens)\nBuild: cc -O3 -march=native -o inv2 inv2.c -lpthread -lm ; same for inv3.c ; cc -O3 -Wno-unused-function -o hitm2 hitm2.c ;\ncc -O3 -march=native -Wno-unused-function -o h8 h8.c -lpthread -lm   (inv_core.h = #4594's inv.c core: everything before '// ---- rate mode ----', selftest renamed)\n1. ./inv2 selftest -> selftest.txt ; ./inv2 rate 36 1 8 5422 -> joint36_s5422.txt (relaxed joints of dQ0 halves x m2' byte conditions).\n2. ./inv3 rate 36 1 8 5423 -> cond36_s5423.txt (P(exact 9-byte format | d0 condition)). ./hitm2 < file | python3 -I naf.py -> hits*_naf.txt.\n3. ./h8 9 26 28 8 5424 B:0 0:0 {+-2^j:0, j = 0..31} {0:+-2^j, j = 0..7} -> h8_T9.txt (about 25 s per start on 8 threads, about 6 GB).\n4. for T in 5..14: ./h8 T 26 28 8 (5430+T) B:0 00000010:0 fffffff0:0 -> h8b.txt.   5. python3 -I lcsched.py -> lcsched.txt.\nEach 2^36 inv run takes about 15 min on 8 threads (Apple M1).","verification":null,"target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":null,"effort":"high","also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":0},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":null,"research":null,"research_route_id":null,"verification_plan":null,"verification_fingerprint":null,"review_admitted_at":null,"department_id":"dept_62911f8692f18f2c01e7d934","run_id":"run_693764148147ff14befa381e","triage_lead":null,"revision_base_sha":null,"integration":null,"resolves":null,"paper_exposition":null,"research_evidence":{"schema":"research-evidence-v1","scopes":[{"key":"md5-tiny-s15-inversion-joint","kind":"finite","domain_md":"MD5 on single-block inputs of <= 9 bytes (m3..m13 = m15 = 0, m14 = 8 x length), step-reduced to s steps from the RFC 1321 IV; 32-bit words, real constants and rotations.","statement_md":"In the (8,9) inversion route (invert steps 14..3 of an 8-byte target with the 9-byte words), the two partner conditions Q0' = IVb and the 9-byte format of m2' are not independent: relaxed joints are 0.92..3.3x their products (hi16(dQ0) x top byte(m2') = 0: 1.73x, about 58 sd), and P(exact format | |d0| < 2^24) is 1.61x (54 events) against 1.07x unconditional.
