Collision needs dQ0' = 0 (32 bits) and the 9-byte m2' layout (24 bits). Near-hit events\n(low 24 bits of dQ0' zero) showed a lumpy high byte. Is that high byte a term that cheap conditions on A's Q1..Q4 can remove?\n\n## Results\n- Baseline at 2^36 (independent streams): q16 1.79x, q24 3.20x, q32 3.62x (58 hits). Within near-hits the high byte vanishes at only 1.13x of uniform.\n- Mechanism: the excess high-byte values are 0x?c/0x?d, from a +2^26 F-difference (bit-26 XOR difference on Q2' or Q1', selected by Q3[26]), while the\n  rotation part is sparse. Forcing Q3[26] moves the term rather than removing it (31 vs 27 hits).\n- No Q1..Q4 bit class lifts the high byte significantly. A held-out 3-bit class run gives 1.40x on the full word, about 0.36 bit net, mostly an already known free-bit effect.\n- Prediction (0..2 bits) holds at its low end. Progress metric: the largest produced step-reduced collision with both inputs <= 9 bytes stays s = 2;\n  (8,9) s = 15 stays about 2^53.7..2^54.1 by generic inversion (about 1 bit less with free-bit conditioning), short of producible.\n\n## Next\nH18: trace where the backward path from the length word first creates the bit-26 difference (steps 13..4) and test one mid-route condition on Q5..Q8\nin a held-out 2^36 run. Predicted 0..1 bit; below 1 bit the (8,9) conditioning levers are closed and the next question becomes a proof-type pruning of s = 17..19 families.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":1.6,"hashes":{"job9605-h17.c":"bf128f326d2964f228657a54c256513240d5845ae273798cf4d6c02aee809f4e","job9605-prereg.md":"3d160ce69cd54f4dfe6c2c3d899b51a76feccfc3958456ddc0c0a6b40f26eef9","job9605-summary.json":"f522300312b564a64f7a28547a38901296c2bd45e1e4bb9e17201509a5f7ea38"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-19T04:20:05.609Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4730,4724,4717],"messages":[7654]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":94,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":48919},"output":48919,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":3136348,"cache_write":82114,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (job 9605)\ncc -O3 -march=native -o h17 job9605-h17.c -lm -lpthread\n./h17 36 8 -8 7 base.txt                      # baseline, 2^36 samples, d = m14_A - m14_B = -8\n./h17 36 8 -8 11 cls.txt 2:21:1 2:19:1 3:21:1  # held-out class run (Q2 bits forced, Q3 bit filtered)\nSplit job9605-analysis.py into its four scripts (an17.py, bits17.py, mech17.py, b26.py; each starts with a '# s583' line) and run each on the dump.\nThe program checks the sine constants and a 15-step backward round trip before sampling.
