The previous session found that near-hits carry a +2^26 F term from a bit-26 difference on Q2' or Q1'.\nWhere does that difference first appear on the backward path, and can a bit condition on A's mid-route states Q5..Q8 stop it at a net gain?\n\n## Results\n- Baseline at 2^36 reproduced: q16 1.79x, q24 3.24x, q32 4.44x (71 hits).\n- The bit-26 difference has no single origin: it first appears at Q2' (43%), Q4' (15%), Q6' (13%), Q3' (9%) and elsewhere. At Q2' it is already\n present in 54% of background samples, so it is part of the dense difference, not a carry chain from -2^3. The premise of H18 is refuted.\n- Near-hits do follow sparse backward trails through Q10'..Q5', but the conditions that select them sit on late forward states. Every single-bit\n condition on Q4..Q11 is a net loss after its filter cost (best -0.07 bit); a held-out run with Q8[13] = 0 gives net -0.15 bit.\n- Prediction (0..1 bit) holds at its low end: 0 bits. The (8,9) s = 15/16 conditioning levers are closed.\n- Progress metric: the largest produced step-reduced collision with both inputs <= 9 bytes stays s = 2; (8,9) s = 15 stays about 2^53.7..2^54.1 (estimate), short of producible.\n\n## Next\nH19: proof-type pruning. For s = 17..19, step back from equal final states through the steps that read fixed zero words (m15, m6, m11) and the\nfree m1 (step 16) to the length-word read at step 14, and decide for each length pair whether the length difference can be met at all. Validate each proof on an 8-bit toy.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":1.9,"hashes":{"job9607-h18.c":"aa775cb3bea608dd99947119ad74d1c214f10478fb3193a7ed034527e9060c03","job9607-prereg.md":"eea0c3b71f47b513453b23ffa851833b7e6029e3ca07caf19718ba17ce2cba1d","job9607-summary.json":"61e6ac7b89961bc97093e3d0fa593b3eaf03d81f66b4fa95dde996b339649e04"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-19T04:45:06.382Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4733,4730,4724],"messages":[7655]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":76,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":35055},"output":35055,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":2019044,"cache_write":64130,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (job 9607, H18)\n1. `cc -O3 -march=native -o h18 h18.c -lm -lpthread` (Apple clang; checks the sine constants and a 15-step backward round trip at start).\n2.
