(padding lens)\n## Question\nFor inputs of at most 9 bytes almost the whole block is zero padding. The all-MSB difference (2^31 in every register) is the classic pattern that\npasses zero-word steps cheaply. Can such a pair enter and leave it inside its single padded block, and would that give a step-reduced collision?\n## Results\n- The pattern is free only in round 3 (H); F, G and I steps each need one bit-31 condition (1/2), measured for all 64 steps.\n- Lemma B (proof): in zero-word steps the bit-31-only states can be entered only through a single \"flip\" register +-2^(31-s), and all-MSB only from\n  bit-31-only states. Leaving all-MSB needs words at steps i and i+3; for these inputs the only exit is steps 16..19 with dm1 = +-2^26 and dm0 = 2^31.\n- Real MD5: equal-length pairs reach all-MSB after step 15 cheaply (about 2^-10 per input, about 2^59 valid (9,9) pairs), but essentially never with the\n  exit words (1 dm0 = 2^31 case in 7.76 million, none with the exit dm1). Unequal-length entries are generic.\n- The route would give s = 20..36 but has about 2^-18 expected pairs; saving 0 bits; family closed. Metric unchanged: largest produced collision\n  s = 2; s = 15/16 about 2^53.6; every s >= 17 about 2^64.\n## Next\nH26: use Lemma B as an exact model of bit-31 differences through the padding steps to explain the top-bit closing at step 16 (s = 17) and prove where it must leave the bit-31 states.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":4,"hashes":{"h25.c":"eecc98767b2fa1a1afd2432e5233e565370de657c9109d7b5bc2ba5af439c412","prereg.md":"f1d6ee97a37543351f911faead4c3a301c34711e26824376efddf6c6b924ac89","recipe.md":"728b9aa1e53ab201f678fcfdfbe29b9b8d2ff485cf9c7465a09c75c2e77c46da","lemma_b.md":"3802353798cd847a1469c706711f475dfa9d7dae3f574227adb1af0d6c4bc882","results.md":"17a994eb76fe8ad692e7a86a550941bd13c0e50dd38e5cea9e3f38b6614ac9e9"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-19T09:56:37.014Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4788,4784,4772],"messages":[7695]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":124,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":103416},"output":103416,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":7285218,"cache_write":167284,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (s615, H25: the all-MSB difference in a padded tiny-input block)\nBuild: cc -O3 -o h25 h25.c -lm -lpthread   (one file; 8 threads in the entry modes; Apple M1, about 4 min per 2^32 inversions from step 15)\n- ./h25 selftest                      full MD5 against md5(\"\") and md5(\"abc\")\n- ./h25 lemma 20 1                    Fact 0: per step 0..63, rate of keeping (M, M, M, M) with zero word difference, forward and backward\n- ./h25 exit 22 2                     all-M at (Q13..Q16), dm1 = 2^26 at 16, dm0 = M at 19: rate of (Q17..Q20) all zero\n- ./h25 entry LA LB D11 D12 D13 D14 log2N seed   B's state after step 13 = A's + D (hex), B inverted through 13..3 (h25b.sh: the\n                                       step-14 entry targets (x, d12, M, M), x in {-8 dL, M - 8 dL}, d12 in {0, M}, plus all-M controls)\n- ./h25 exitready LA LB log2N seed    B's state after step 15 = A's + (M, M, M, M); B inverted through 15..3, step 14 with B's own length word (h25c.sh)\n- ./h25 sstate LA LB MASK log2N seed  same with (e13 M, e14 M, e15 M, e16 M), MASK = e13e14e15e16 in binary (h25d.sh: the 7 other states with e16 = 1)\nEach entry-type line reports q32 (dQ0' = 0: B starts from the IV), q8/q16 lifts vs uniform, and for q32 hits: dm0' = M, dm0' = M with dm1' in\n{+-2^26, +-2^26 + M} (the 16..19 exit words), B's padding format, and a table of up to 4096 (dm0', dm1', dm2') classes.","verification":null,"target":null,"finding":null,"human_md":null,"provisional":false,"effects_applied_at":null,"effort":"high","also_fix":null,"transcript_omitted":{"share":0,"omitted":0,"outputs":0},"patch_hash":null,"superseded_by":null,"duplicate_of":null,"transcript_resubmitted_at":null,"file_notes":null,"research":null,"research_route_id":null,"verification_plan":null,"verification_fingerprint":null,"review_admitted_at":null,"department_id":"dept_62911f8692f18f2c01e7d934","run_id":"run_891dac7536a04aae3b165b92","triage_lead":null,"revision_base_sha":null,"integration":null,"resolves":null,"paper_exposition":null,"research_evidence":{"schema":"research-evidence-v1","scopes":[{"key":"md5-all-msb-pass-rates","kind":"finite","domain_md":"MD5 (RFC 1321) on single-block inputs of <= 9 bytes, where m3..m13 and m15 are zero on both sides; modular differences dQ = Q' - Q of the state words Q[i] (step i writes Q[i+1]); M = 2^31; S = {0, M}^4 (every register differs at most in bit 31).","statement_md":"With all four registers differing by 2^31 and a zero word difference, MD5 keeps the all-MSB difference with probability exactly 1 in steps 32..47 (H) and 1/2 in every F, G and I step, forward and backward (2^20 random states per step: 0.4990..0.5013).
