The step-16 closing of equal-length pairs can use a\npure top-bit difference (2^31), and earlier sessions measured a large lift for a top-bit target before the step-14 closing (2^10) but only 4.19x\nfor the step-16 one. Does an exact model of bit-31-only differences explain this, and can any tiny input keep the walk in those states longer?\n## Results\n- Lemma C (proof): a bit-31-only state that is not constant leaves the bit-31 states within 3 inverse zero-word steps, forced, whatever the\n inputs or bit conditions; no padding step can supply the word difference that would prevent it. The step-16 target exits at inverse step 13\n (dQ10 = +-2^19, +2^31); forward, dm1 = 2^31 cannot be absorbed at step 1 because two IV words share bit 31. Both ends of the route are forced.\n- Real MD5 (2^32 inputs per target): the exit is exactly as predicted at rate 1. Aligned by steps after the exit, both top-bit targets decay the same\n way; the 2^10 vs 4.19x gap is 2 extra zero-word steps between the exit and the IV word.\n- Saving 0 bits; the bit-31 family is closed in the padding window. Metric unchanged: largest produced collision s = 2; s = 15/16 about 2^53.6;\n every s >= 17 about 2^64.\n## Next\nH27: the (8,9) length-word target (-8 at Q11) has the same two quiet steps and exit position as the step-14 top-bit target but a lift of about\n6.6x instead of 2^10: locate where its walk departs (expected: borrows of -8) and whether any A-side bit class keeps it on the top-bit curve.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.65,"hashes":{"h26.c":"0898257ef3908a2f36c93d0f19f617089a7bec836eafff66db5b07cfdc3ed21e","prereg.md":"86b30be44e6e7682d5ee40f89cd63faf5327711581b2f88c46e56cd5e1a7b4fe","recipe.md":"121e1c52d9d26887f81f362935f289e5c23a9bf5369aecce2d4217daf4cea8c3","lemma_c.md":"b27a54eb8712eddd550ff4d89bf1b4738c1af7c9b9205288a8e1b4348a1f7098","results.md":"cc6bc854f5130c3cabc14c27f8290fb0a1e3ffc4e92f7317c72436cac63e7ff3"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-19T10:09:26.926Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4795,4788,4784],"messages":[7699]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":78,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":54009},"output":54009,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":2924254,"cache_write":111114,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (s616, H26: Lemma B as an exact backward automaton for the top-bit closing targets)\nBuild: cc -O3 -o h26 h26.c -lm -lpthread (one file, 8 threads; Apple M1, about 2.6 min per 2^32 walks through 13 inverse steps (155 s measured))\n- ./h26 selftest full MD5 against md5(\"\") and md5(\"abc\")\n- ./h26 walk 15 13 32 616015 T15 (F21, s = 17 closing at step 16): random 9-byte A, B = A + 2^31 in Q13 after step 15, B inverted through\n steps 15..3 with A's words (equal lengths).
