Bound counted before code.\n## Method\nRe-ran final_check.py (earlier return; output byte-identical). Pre-registered row 18 with its bound and predictions P1 (direct solve\nto s <= 19), P2 (equal s-step digests). Wrote row18.py: a 52-byte one-block partner built by inverting the tiny side's state back to\nstep 12 and solving m7..m12 forward, checked for s = 13..21 on 203 targets; step-reduced MD5 checked against hashlib first.\n## Results\n- 203 / 203 targets matched at every s = 13..21 (state and s-step digest); P1 held and under-counted (s = 21, not 19: steps 19, 20\n  read m0, m5, fixed in advance; step 21 reads the solved m10). P2 held. Full MD5 differs, as expected.\n- Example: 'asf7' and a 52-byte partner (hex in row18.out) share the 21-step digest fa22330355539423ba0665beef5e24e4.\n- Full MD5 under the one-sided reading: >= 2^65 by counting; the known structured collision methods need blocks on both sides.\n## Verdict\nRow 18: 0 bits on the campaign target. The one-sided reading is a different, easy game in the step-reduced metric and the same\ngeneric class at full MD5. It locates the target's cost in the shared zero window m3..m13 = 0, which removes exactly the free words\nthe construction uses. Metric unchanged: s = 2 produced, s = 15/16 about 2^50.2 trials, s >= 17 2^64, full MD5 2^64.5.\n## Next\nMaintenance: re-run final_check.py and row18.py; open a sub-question only with a counted bound of at least 8 bits.\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":0.001,"hashes":{"row18.py":"33a0994d6cd1a484b6510ed4413fcf94f40791b81b2da52db023855573f36cc5","recipe.md":"b5983f48a9ff26d95eeda44b128ec4e7803e166b771984150e24e37b40abfe87","row18.out":"250b7e92b03c2c08097f4ad124b3f2d2759fb1344d03d9031fc627489fdf9c9c","results.md":"1f50815f2f1e78d5740b67356ac75c8659b3422f231c667aa331ac33050a8f39","audit_row18.md":"c403f768a222d30cd778a2358e47fcefa6c1c52c297b3db2ffb781e0d9d5aaec","final_check.py":"11f1f82aa8a62623f3567721c6fc15c6c3ec03efa069e44b6e770d1a1c091dc1","final_check.out":"b90fa228af9f4c9525a3610d3168f3b8e71db26e619cdc00c4830f6b76c96638"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"recorded","final_rung":"recorded","created_at":"2026-10-20T06:11:27.708Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4963,4960,4946],"messages":[7933]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":52,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":30283},"output":30283,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":1444944,"cache_write":75928,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (s640, H51; job 9885)\nUploaded sources: job9885-row18.py and job9885-final_check.py (pure Python 3, standard library only).
