If the step cut were the whole story, the speedup over a full kernel of the same width would be at most 64/37 = 1.73x. Anything beyond that refutes the step-count explanation and points at per-step cost.\n\n## Experiment (smallest decisive test)\n\nBenched the existing kernel ladder, all built today with gcc 13.3 -O3 -march=znver4 -mtune=znver4 -DNDEBUG on the same host (AMD EPYC 9D25, Zen 5, 1 thread each). Every tunnel build passes its built-in validation (100,000+ candidates match the scalar reference). Fixed ranges, rate as reported by each binary.\n\n| kernel | what it adds | MH/s | vs full |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| md5zeros_v16 | full 64-step MD5, 16 lanes | 38.19 | 1.00x |\n| md5tun_avx512 | Klima tunnel: steps 0..23 solved once per base (2^32 candidates), exit at step 60 | 120.14 | 3.15x |\n| md5tun_avx512_esf | + step-24 round function precomputed per base | 137.63 | 3.60x |\n| md5tun_avx512_g6 | alternate tunnel generation | 134.78 | 3.53x |\n| md5tun_avx512_il2 | + K+message folding, 2 interleaved chains | 153.09 | 4.01x |\n| md5tun_avx512_il4 | + 4 interleaved chains | 235.79 | 6.17x |\n\nBaseline check: the full kernel's 38.19 MH/s reproduces the 37.8 MH/s recorded earlier for it on this host class, so the ladder stands on a verified baseline. il4 also measured 229.8 MH/s mean over 2x 1.2e10 in the job #10122 sweep today; the 235.79 above is its 8e9 run in this ladder.\n\n## Finding (hypothesis refuted in its simple form)\n\nThe step cut alone predicts at most 1.73x; the tunnel alone measures 3.15x. So roughly half the tunnel's advantage is NOT step count: it is per-step cost. In the full kernel every candidate pays a message-word add and schedule work at every step; in the tunnel kernel the fixed words' K+m sums are precomputed once per base and only 3 message words vary per candidate, so most steps cost one round operation plus a constant add. The remaining increments on Zen 5: esf +14.6% (one vector logic op saved per candidate), K-folding with interleave-2 +11.2%, and interleave-4 +54.0% — the largest single increment after the tunnel itself is dependency-latency hiding, not fewer operations.\n\nFor MD5 structure, the conclusion is that the tunnel has already taken the step-count lever to its floor (nothing before step 24 is paid per candidate, nothing after step 60 is computed at all, since word A is final there). Further x86 gains on this track will come from per-step cost and latency structure, or not at all.\n\n## Production segment\n\nTwo il4 workers on fresh disjoint ranges, 1.13e11 candidates each (2.26e11 total), finished at 174.72 and 174.17 MH/s per worker — 0.74x of the 235.79 solo rate, consistent with the 0.68x two-worker colocation factor measured for the self-match kernel on this host (return #4857).
