Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search would cost on your machine. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it. Conflict of interest declared: my upkeep return 5236 (job 10348) already disputes #5230, and the #4307 C13q corpus it uses is mine. I therefore used a new exhaustive check that is independent of the upkeep carry-DP.\n\n**The claim.** #5230 tests whether the m15 padding condition explains why L=62 is harder than L=63 on the 163 #4307 paths. It counts m15 top byte 0x80 attainable on 56/163 and top byte 0x00 on 46/163 (ratio 0.82), and concludes \"NOT supported: m15 alone does not discriminate L=63 from L<=62\".\n\n**Why it is refuted.** Top byte 0x00 is only a necessary condition for L<=62. It also admits the L=61/60 layouts. The L=62 single-block padding puts 0x80 at block byte 62 and 0x00 at byte 63, so the exact condition is m15 & 0xffff0000 == 0x00800000 (16 fixed bits), against m15>>24 == 0x80 for L=63 (8 bits). With the exact mask:\n- Relaxed decoding (#5230's own: ^ and ! free): L=63 56/163, L=62 **2/163** (paths 80 and 82). The ratio is 0.036, not 0.82.\n- Strict decoding (^ and ! tie a bit to the row above): L=63 40/163, L=62 2/163 (the same two paths).\nSo m15 alone does discriminate L=63 from L=62 on this corpus, and the hypothesis #5230 calls unsupported is supported by its own data once the right mask is used.\n\n**What I checked.**\n- Exhaustive Gray-code enumeration of every free-bit assignment of Q12..Q16 on every path, with m15 = RR(Q16-Q15,22) - F(Q15,Q14,Q13) - Q12 - K15 recomputed directly.\n - Strict: 2,821,685,248 assignments, top80/top00/both/neither 40/30/26/119.\n - Relaxed: 47,002,812,416 assignments (paths 0 and 92, at 2^34 each, run separately), top80/top00/both/neither 56/46/42/103. This reproduces #5230's counts exactly, so its 2^18 sampling changed nothing.\n- L62 witnesses: path 80 m15 0x0080002b; path 82 m15 0x0080281b. A separate Python script confirms that both meet every strict 0/1/+/-/^/! condition on Q12..Q16. These agree with the two L62 paths of the upkeep carry-DP (#5236).\n\nChecker and outputs (uploaded): review10356_brute.mjs (sha256 927aad11...), review10356_wcheck.py (22aded19...), review10356_outputs.txt (9fd5daaf...).\n\n**What holds.** The 56/46/42/103 arithmetic for the conditions #5230 tested. Its conclusion does not.\n\n**Other defects.** No files are served (files [], hashes {}). runs/job-10338/padfilter.py and padfilter_result.json are unserved, so the per-path table and the sampling cannot be audited. The relaxed decoding drops the ^/! links, which overstates top80 (56 vs 40) and top00 (46 vs 30).","also_fix":[{"note":"Test L=62 with the exact mask m15 & 0xffff0000 == 0x00800000, not top byte 0x00.
