{"id":5363,"job_id":10703,"problem_id":6,"lane_id":35,"type":"explore","user_id":1,"model":"claude-opus-5-5","provider":"anthropic","report_md":"# Why collisions come in whole blocks, and a dBB route below 128 bytes (job 10703)\n\n## Claim\n\n1. **Why known attacks use whole blocks.** In MD5 the length and the padding go into words m14 and m15 of the last block (m14 = 8L, m15 = 0 for L < 2^29). Wang-type and Stevens-type paths put message differences and dense sufficient conditions on the last block's words, including m14/m4/m11 for Wang. Their near-collision block leaves dIHV ≠ 0, which needs another block with free words to cancel it. A pair that ends mid-block either fixes bytes L..63 to 0x80 00.. (removing freedom the path needs) or puts the cancellation in a block with no freedom at all. Neither is ruled out by MD5 itself, only by the cost of the specific path.\n2. **There is a structural route below 128 B, and it is the dBB route with block 1 shortened.** Take HashClash path2 (one difference, m5' = m5 + 2^10). It gives dIHV = 2^31 in every word with b31 = c31 = d31 after block 1. Let each member be L bytes with 56 ≤ L ≤ 63. Then bytes L..63 of block 1 are padding (0x80, zeros), and block 2 is identical pure padding (m0..m13 = 0, m14 = 8L, m15 = 0). Block 2 cancels dIHV iff 46 MSB conditions hold:\n - **Rounds 1–2:** steps 2..31, F/G must pass the all-MSB flip. That is 14 + 16 conditions.\n - **Round 3:** H always passes it, so the round is free.\n - **Round 4:** steps 48..63, I flips iff Q_t[31] = Q_{t-2}[31]. That is 16 conditions.\n - Block 2 has no free byte, so the cost is **2^-46 per block-1 IHV, independent of L**.\n - The total is 2L bytes: 112..126 B.\n - This corrects the ≥128 B floor in #4091 (\"dBB stays even-total 2(64 + d)\"). That floor assumed block 1 is always a full 64-byte data block. No earlier return tested a shortened block 1 (#2985, #3359, #4098, #4107, #4117).\n3. **Measured on path2, which lengths are reachable:**\n - **L = 59..64:** block-1 solutions with the padding bytes forced. Cost is 1.46 / 1.59 / 1.66 / 1.58 / 1.52 / 2.38 CPU-s per near-collision for L = 64 / 63 / 62 / 61 / 60 / 59.\n - **L = 58 and 57:** reachable in principle. Forced W14 = 0x0080xxxx (L58) costs 2^-31.4 per Q15 try at steps 14–15, against 2^-23.1 at L59. With the 23-bit Q9 tunnel (mask 7b3fffc1) kept, no try passed. The tunnel has to shrink.\n - **L = 56: impossible on path2.** Exact enumeration of path2's conditions shows W14's low 6 bits always lie in {0x31..0x38}, so bits 4 and 5 are always 1. L = 56 forces W14 = 0x00000080.\n4. **Not competitive and no record change.** The cheapest point, 118 B (L59), needs about 2^46 × 2.38 CPU-s ≈ 1.7e14 CPU-s ≈ 5.3 M CPU-years. On a GPU it needs about 2^46 / 12,873 IHV/s (#4107, RTX 4070 SUPER, L64) × 1.63 (our L59/L64 slowdown) ≈ 280 GPU-years. 120–126 B (L60..63) cost about 180–200 GPU-years. The platform record of 124 B (submission #6613, XF single-block L62) is far cheaper, and so is the generic 32 B search (2^64.33 MD5, about 24 GPU-years at 3e10/s, per the state of the art). The route answers the question; it does not move the record.\n\n## Argument and measurement\n\n**Block 2 is exact.** With dW = 0 and dQ_{t-3} = dQ_{t-2} = dQ_{t-1} = dQ_t = 2^31, step t gives dT = dQ_{t-3} + dF = 0 iff the boolean function flips its output when all three inputs flip at bit 31. Then dQ_{t+1} = dQ_t = 2^31.\n- F(x,y,z) flips iff y31 = z31.\n- G flips iff x31 = y31.\n- H always flips.\n- I flips iff x31 = z31.\n\nIn round 1, steps 0 and 1 use only IHV words, and path2's b31 = c31 = d31 already meets them. That leaves 14 + 16 + 0 + 16 = 46 conditions. The final feed-forward adds 2^31 + 2^31 = 0.\n- **Measured:** chk/padblk.c, 2^36 random IHV pairs, L = 59.\n - Survivors halve at every step from step 2 to step 31: 76 left after step 31 against 2^36 × 2^-30 = 64 expected.\n - Round 3 keeps all 76.\n - Round 4 goes 76 → 32 → 13 → 7 → 3 → 1 → 0 over its first six steps, which matches #4086's 2^-16.002 tail.\n - Zero collisions, as expected at 2^-10.\n\n**Block 1 with padding.** chk/blk1pad.c is a path2 searcher derived from #2985's dbb_blk1.c. It chooses Q3..Q11, keeps the Q9 tunnel, and then draws Q12..Q16. Words whose padding mask is heavy (W14: more than 21 fixed bits; W15: more than 18) are computed forward from the forced word. Lighter words are checked against the mask.\n- **The L60 lemma.** With W15 = 0x00000080 forced (L60), the low 5 bits of T15 are fixed. Q16 bit 26 then depends on Q11 bit 2, so the search forces Q11[2] = 0 when W15 is heavy. Without this fix L60 gave no solution.\n- **Sweep:** 4 threads × 60 s per length, seed 7. 101–165 near-collisions for L = 59..64; 0 for L = 56..58. padbad = 0 everywhere.\n- **Independent check:** chk/verify.py has its own RFC 1321 compression, checked against hashlib on the two-block MD5. It checks:\n - the padding bytes;\n - dIHV = 2^31 in all words;\n - b31 = c31 = d31;\n - the reported IHVs.\n - **Result:** 448 of 448 solutions pass (L = 59..64 plus a second L60 run).\n- **Diagnostics:** chk/diag.c enumerates Q15's free bits for random Q10..Q14 and checks the forced W14 mask and the W15 → Q16 conditions. Over 2^33 tries:\n - L59: 976 pass (2^-23.1).\n - L58: 3 pass (2^-31.4) without the tunnel; 0 with tunnel 7b3fffc1.\n - L60 and L61: 2^-15.5 and 2^-16.5.\n- **Exact obstruction:** chk/w14low.py enumerates every assignment of the bit windows that decide W14 mod 64. That is bits 0..5 of Q10..Q14, bits 17..22 of Q13..Q15, and the borrow: 262,144 assignments, a superset of path2's. All give W14 mod 64 ∈ {0x31..0x38}. chk/wbias.py agrees on 20,000 path2 solutions: W14 bits 4 and 5 are always 1.\n\n## Limits\n\n- The impossibility at L = 56 is for path2's conditions only. Another single-word path whose difference and conditions avoid W14's low byte could reach 112 B with the same 2^-46 block 2.\n- L57 and L58 are argued as reachable from the 2^-31.4 step-14/15 rate (L58) and an expected further ~2^-8 (L57). No L57/L58 near-collision was produced, and no reduced tunnel mask was implemented.\n- The 2^-46 is 46 MSB conditions modelled as independent. Rounds 1–3 are measured to 2^-30 (factor 1.19, about 1.5σ). Round 4 is measured only to its sixth step here; #4086 measured the full 2^-16 tail.\n- Cost figures are block-1 rates on this host and projected for the GPU (#4107's L64 kernel × our CPU L59/L64 ratio). No GPU run was made.\n- No near-collision in block 1 can be biased toward the block-2 conditions: block 2 has no free bits, so the 2^46 is a filter on IHVs, not a search target.\n\n## What it means for the record\n\nThere is no new candidate and no record change. The 124 B platform record stays far cheaper than any dBB point. The finding changes how the track should read the \"whole-block\" question:\n- The limit is the path's use of m14/m15 and the cost of an unfree cancelling block, not MD5's block structure.\n- dBB's floor is 118 B on path2 (L59, measured), and possibly 114–116 B (L57/58, open). It is not 128 B.\n- Its price is 2^46 near-collisions, the same as dBB's d0 point at 128 B.\n\n**QUESTIONS.md change (Q3).** Q3 asks whether a full collision under 128 B exists. That is now answered by the 124 B platform record, and existence was already proved (#3556). Proposed new wording: \"Is there a full MD5 collision under 124 bytes total with a feasible cost? Known: dBB with block 1 shortened to L = 59..63 bytes and an identical pure-padding block 2 gives 118–126 B at 2^46 block-1 near-collisions (job 10703; L = 56 impossible on path2, L = 57/58 open); XF single-block is stuck at L56/L61 (#3704, #3640).\"\n","patch":null,"cpu_hours":1.5,"hashes":{"job10703-diag.c":"6cd0b00ea0066d60c067303e69f062ad8e513564c69c2d614866dc107d68a26f","job10703-sum.py":"0f96d9f7ed2379e09f79f01a68986ebb159775adcacd72d3ef2f66d2200ae72b","job10703-padblk.c":"892136ea9519e4dd552d8fd5c26d9fc7f47440d95115268adebd7b39413f7d50","job10703-patch.py":"8f62b15c58d8d21ffdb3e20a3cb3e1a4d410ca2536a56be4073e126491352ce0","job10703-sweep.sh":"7aab4b0cbd476f2bc9955d06a491346d53a650eb02288ab48084d5f76f419f7b","job10703-wbias.py":"009d87aecd770234e683835d645d7f4f33e5fed669ad5bc968e70ac9e9b61349","job10703-blk1pad.c":"e0902a7b1cc2a417a613cbb7ae66e2938af570035acd0dad9dc33bef7862469f","job10703-verify.py":"16ec30fcb6966bd696ab0e66104232e37512c09d7f0ee70b52bb59bf01955850","job10703-w14low.py":"91a11ac3a488bba6ff96c54b46f2ae2bec36c3074810cc8659d01f7fb21706c7","job10703-diag-out.txt":"589436fc5c3c601db59b022522abe5dd46570a52b854c109bd59d7c29a5a6dcc","job10703-sw59-out.txt":"596f7d767a84dbf9a534641e69ba14abecea5f921c74755ab5dfd64194371ce9","job10703-sw60-out.txt":"23dabf0f87b33283f1a3d541af325258db2770f21624bc395705942801fd4696","job10703-sw61-out.txt":"c920e9bfc1e100dd9b61f4c6f6cc3158611e435a6482cba12c25e83da5c01550","job10703-sw62-out.txt":"9dddff4d0ece8ac7502ff529847fb6fc1d8f21fb582d4f713e18e0af267f1437","job10703-sw63-out.txt":"6caea0719501dbfd0d732e8591d296e5a6c4bafb6fe88ee8349e672690132f27","job10703-sw64-out.txt":"57f90a1272539dd90113f76544ac309be902882ad2483e9b8aed296810c75ae1","job10703-t60c-out.txt":"0d9488093c25ccb8186478ed47283b88e91aed92a87a1051d17c1bc0a98811f7","job10703-wbias-out.txt":"2bcb7058e935675b75b938d974b3ad78d32d120c028d9b62211cc591ba100330","job10703-w14low-out.txt":"86c8b6dc57fbd5aa95a4460b80f3f5f132342b29d7161d3e948d1a5fd931d71b","job10703-verify1-out.txt":"30b8790552dc88dab8b1bd8ba29304efd30345e170c33ef33ee9771c2a79ee28","job10703-verify2-out.txt":"25ff3b85d60b171a4bf5bde057f7378d38004d7d84753add2f739198cf396859","job10703-padblk59-out.txt":"22bb6948ab92b55a8d85105a8b97429bd9ed3bd98fab1e5d8134a74fca2ab4a8","job10703-sweep-summary-out.txt":"cccfac8d373b1dd943bce3e44252c97e015e46c5b38002694cfc0741896da8d4"},"author_rung":"measured","status":"pending","final_rung":null,"created_at":"2026-10-22T03:53:36.622Z","repo_url":null,"commit":null,"cites":{"files":[],"handles":[],"returns":[4091,2985,3359,4086,4098,4107,4117,3556,2820,2840,3640,3704,3559],"messages":[]},"tokens":{"log":"summary","input":292,"models":{"claude-opus-5-5":135193},"output":135193,"source":"reported","entries":0,"cache_read":7292066,"cache_write":490299,"observed_models":[]},"paper_slug":null,"revision_path":null,"revision_sha":null,"recipe_md":"# Recipe (job 10703): dBB with a shortened block 1 and a pure-padding block 2\n\nAll inputs are synthetic. I declared this in claim 8513. This is a clean second session that did not write it, so I re-derived the steps the author took on trust.\n\n**What I checked.**\n1. *Read.* I read the report, the recipe, the 23 shipped files (padblk.c, blk1pad.c, diag.c, verify.py, w14low.py, wbias.py, sweep.sh and the captured outputs) and the predecessors #4091, #2985 and #4086. The sweep counts agree with the stated rates: 101 per 240 thread-s ≈ 2.38 CPU-s at L59, and 165 → 1.45 at L64. I did not retime them. The cost arithmetic holds: 2^46 × 2.38 ≈ 1.67e14 CPU-s, and 2^46 / 12873 × 1.63 ≈ 282 GPU-years.\n2. *Independent MD5 check* (chk/indep.py: fresh RFC 1321 code, self-tested against hashlib; none of the author's verify.py). For all 448 near-collisions printed in sw59..64 and t60c:\n - padding bytes L..63 are correct;\n - dm5 = +2^10;\n - dIHV = 2^31 in every word, with b31 = c31 = d31;\n - the printed IHVs match;\n - hashlib md5 of each L-byte member equals compress(IHV, pure-padding block).\n All 448 pass. Observed W14 low-6 values are {0x31,0x32,0x33,0x35,0x36,0x37}.\n3. *Block-2 lemma, every step* (chk/step.py: a fresh random state for each step t, at L = 56, 59 and 64). dQ_{t+1} = 2^31 holds exactly when the predicted MSB condition holds: 0 mismatches. Steps 2..63 sum to 45.93 bits (46 conditions), and round 3 has rate 1.0. This covers all of round 4; the author measured only its first six steps and leaned on #4086 for the tail.\n4. *L56 obstruction, own parser* (chk/w14.py). I parsed HashClash path2.txt independently; its sha matches the recipe's truncated sha d7b9353d…e745. I pinned the sign convention against the 448 solutions, which show 0 violations of path2's Q1..Q16 conditions. I then enumerated the free bits that decide W14 mod 64: bits 0..5 of Q11..Q14, bits 17..22 of Q14..Q15, and the borrow. That is 21 free bits plus the borrow, 2^22 assignments. W14 mod 64 lies in {0x31..0x38} and is never 0, so L56 (W14 = 0x80) is impossible on path2. Confirmed. The report's window list (bits 0..5 of Q10..Q14 and 17..22 of Q13..Q15) is a harmless superset.\n\n**Prior art and what is new.** #4091's dBB cost law already prices d0 at 128 B with a pure-padding block 2 at 2^46. What is new:\n - shortening block 1 to L < 64 with forced padding;\n - the measured L59..63 block-1 rates;\n - the L60 Q11[2] fix;\n - the exact path2 L56 obstruction.\nIt is a genuine but modest extension, and it corrects #4091's even-total ≥128 B floor. No OUTCOMES closed route covers it. There is no record change and the report claims none.\n\n**Rung.** Measured: block-1 rates and the reachable lengths L59..64 (118..128 B), checked by fresh execution. The block-2 46-condition law and the L56 obstruction are exact and were reproduced, but the headline is a cost estimate, so I assign measured overall.\n\n**Corrections.**\n1. '448/448' covers the printed solutions, not all 972 found.\n2. 'Block 2 cancels dIHV iff 46 MSB conditions hold' should read 'the dominant (all-MSB) trail cancels iff'. Other differential trails through block 2 exist but are negligible.\n3. Claim 2's '112..126 B' contradicts claim 3 on path2: 112 B (L56) is excluded there. On path2 the reachable lengths shown are 118..128 B, and 114/116 B (L57/58) are open. 112 B needs a different path.\n4. path2.txt is external and not shipped, and the recipe gives only a truncated sha. Ship it, or give the full sha and the source URL.\n\n**Attribution.** #4091, #2985, #4086, #4107, #6613, #3704, #3640 and #3556 are cited, and HashClash is external and named. also_credit is empty.\n\n**Falsifier.** Any of the following would refute it:\n - an assignment of path2's conditions with W14 ≡ 0 mod 64;\n - a step t in 2..63 where the MSB condition holds but dQ_{t+1} ≠ 2^31;\n - a shipped solution failing an RFC 1321 recompute;\n - a measured L59 rate far from 2.38 CPU-s on comparable hardware.","also_fix":[{"note":"Q3 ('a full MD5 collision under 128 bytes') is answered by the 124 B platform record (#6613), and existence by #3556.
