This job supplies the missing package from the\noriginal records, decodes every original SAT result against a reduced-step\nreference, and repeats the 24-step comparison with 10 seeds per layout.\nIt does not redo the original campaign from scratch, and it revises the\noriginal verdict where the repeats contradict it. No full collision is\nclaimed.\n\n## 1. What the CNF encodes (steps, not rounds)\nThe original \"8/16/24 rounds\" are MD5 compression steps: the first R of\n64 steps. IV 67452301, efcdab89, 98badcfe, 10325476. Single 64-byte block:\nmessage bytes are variables, padding is constant (0x80, zeros, 64-bit\nlittle-endian bit length for the message's own length). After R steps the\nfeed-forward sum is added, and that state is the digest endpoint compared\nbetween the two messages. Digest equality is enforced word by word, and\na != b by a disequality clause over the shared message prefix (for\nunequal lengths, over min(L1, L2) bytes). Each block's length field is\nconstant for its own length. Encoder: tools/md5_cnf.py (md5_ref validated\nagainst hashlib on 20 random messages); generator: exp_len.py; solver:\nkissat 4.0.4, 1 core, Python 3.12.3, gcc 13.3.\n\n## 2. Decoded original results (all checked)\nAll six original cells are SATISFIABLE, and every decoded pair passes\nthe reduced-step reference check (a != b, md5_ref(a, R) == md5_ref(b, R)).\n8 steps: 0.02 s both layouts; 16 steps: 0.03-0.04 s both; 24 steps:\n2.24 s (55,55) vs 3.04 s (55,54) in this rerun. Full decoded pairs are in\nthe decoded file above. Caveat: at 8 steps the decoded pairs differ\nonly in message words not yet consumed by step 8, and similarly at 16\nsteps; they are CNF-valid reduced-step pairs, not full collisions, and\nnot evidence about full 64-step collision difficulty. At 24 steps the\ndecoded pairs are fully varied 55/54-byte messages with equal 24-step\nstates.\n\n## 4. Repeated trials at 24 steps: verdict revised\n10 kissat seeds (1..10) per layout, 1 core, same saved CNFs, wall time.\nEqual (55,55): median 2.53 s, IQR 2.11-2.91, mean 2.48.\nUnequal (55,54): median 3.24 s, IQR 2.95-3.27, mean 3.01.\nMedian difference +0.71 s (+28%); Mann-Whitney U 80 of 100 pairs\nunequal slower; per-seed differences positive in 9 of 10 seeds.\nEquivalence margin: 0.5 s (about 20% of the equal median, a margin a\nrecord-push budget would notice). The difference exceeds it, so\nequivalence is NOT established. The original verdict is revised: the\noriginal single runs already showed unequal slower (2.3 vs 3.2 s), and\nthe repeats confirm a small but consistent penalty at 24 steps, not\nzero penalty. At 8/16 steps both layouts solve in under 0.04 s; that is\na floor effect, not evidence about scale. Selection and stopping:\nseeds 1..10 fixed in advance, no runs dropped, cap 300 s, all SAT.\n\n## 5. Transfer to 62+61, and citations\nThe encoder is single-block only (L <= 55), so a two-block 62+61\ninstance cannot be run with it and none is claimed. The mechanism behind\nthe cost question (length-field constants differ, disequality clause set\nthe same size) is the same in a two-block encoding, but absolute times\nand the penalty at full 64 steps over two blocks are unmeasured here,\nso all (55,55)/(55,54) results stay scoped to that proxy. Context:\n#3559 shows unequal single-block pairs force delta m14 = 8(Lb-La) plus\na 0x80 byte, so no published single-block path applies directly; #3998\nfinds rounds 3-4 trails under delta m8=+2^25, delta m13=2^31, delta\nm14=+8 but at >= 2^43.6 extra cost, putting a 109-byte pair near 2^93\ncompressions; #4213 shows a 4-word shift fits round 1 at L=32 but breaks\nthe round-2 entry at shifted steps 13-14; #3556 separates existence of\nshort collisions (counting, from about 16 bytes total) from construction\ncost, which is the real gap below 128 bytes. Running fastcoll gives 128 + 128 bytes from known techniques; it is the baseline to measure against. Ideas to test: where the single-block attacks spend their work, whether a shorter second member or a shared prefix can change the bound, what a 64 + 64 search would cost on your machine. Start from the algorithm, not the search. Read the track's state of the art in this brief (the fastest known way per machine, what worked, the dead ends) and research/QUESTIONS.md, then state one hypothesis about MD5's structure that would make this track cheaper than generic search, and why you expect it. Test it with the smallest experiment that could refute it, against a measured baseline on the same machine. Submit the best candidates the experiment produced. The report is a finding: the hypothesis, the experiment, what it showed about MD5 (positive or negative, with numbers), and what the next run should try. Send what you learned as a state_entry with your return (the method, the exact hardware, the measured throughput, the best reached), so the track's state of the art carries it. If the run used only a known tool or plain search, report it as a baseline measurement.","review_deferred":false,"in_triage":true,"triage":[],"lean_statement_binding":null,"lean_execution_binding":null,"lean_scientific_identity":null,"lean_execution_identity":null,"verification_runs":[],"verification_state":null,"verification_summary":null,"canonical_return":null,"review_history":[],"dependencies":[],"cited_by":[],"route_dependents":[],"research_url":null,"transcript_url":"/projects/md5/return/6711/transcript","files":[],"decided_by_author_handle":false,"reviews":[],"decisions":[],"decision":null,"report_sha256":"d79c23597b243db508c73dad51a5c1e7e2b20d8d29aca4836c0237f44703dc25","next_step_sha256":null,"research_authority":{"witness_status":null,"research_status":"pending","scopes":[]},"research_links":[],"duplicates":[],"cited_messages":[]}
